I bought a dell xps/studio (7100 series) x6 core Phenom Processor, 6gb Ram,etc but instead of paying like $150 more dollars I just got the basic ATI HD 5450 1GB.

Right now I'm playing on a x2 Athlon Processor/6gb ram with a 8400 gs nvidia graphics card, unfortunatly I can only play on low settings....so with my new PC should I be able to play DAO at least on "high" setting?

Thanks:wizard:

I think I got the same card...sounds right. I can play on very high graphics, 1080x1000something resolution just fine. For the price of the card, it was an excellent buy for me.

Unfortunately, no. Like the 8400 GS the HD 5450 is not meant for games. It is an entry-level graphics card aimed at low price users who watch video or simply desire functionality in gaming. The $150 HD 5770 is faster by a factor of 10. The GTX 460 at $220 is even more disproportionate.

This card specs seems to be really below the recommended card specs (see here)

Hmm, are we talking mobile versions or a PC card? Cause like I said, I have a card by this number (Asus card, in my desktop computer) and it plays DAO great. So maybe we've got a miscommunication thing going on....

well on the back of the DAO box it says recommended graphics (ATI wise) 3850 512MB or greater.....guess I'm having a hard time seeing a 5450 series not playing it better than recommended...?

Also--I suppose I'm learning as to why people use consoles for gaming, never have to worry about specs. I'll be getting a xbox 360 soon if DAO doesn't do the trick.

Be warned that the ATI HD 5450 has lower specs that the ATI HD 3850.

So ATI goes counter clock wise with their numbers spec wise? I ask because someone said the 5770 was better (naturally I would think it would be).:o

As for nVidia, the ATI card numbers have no direct relation with their relative perfomances. They rather identify a serie of graphic cards (ie HD 3800 series, HD 4800 series, etc.). If you have doubt about a non-mobile card specs/performances, use the site I gave you the link to.

I don't have doubt so much as I do confusion lol, but your help is appreciated. I'll check the website out, also what is a good affordable gaming graphics card these days?

"Just great" is an ezxtreme exaggeration of the first order.  It is barely at the minimum (actually below the X800 GTO, the least powerful of the five year old X800s).  The official minimum, to obtain official support, is the X850, which is five notches above the HD 5450.  ATI had stopped ofering drivers for the X800s, and Bioware didn't try very hard to test any of those.  With an Omega driver, the X800 Pro card (above the 5450 also) seemed more practical to me as minimum.

www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php

As you can plainly see, the HD 5450 trails behind, except on shader operations only, at which it is comparatively good (while the X800 was rather primitive), and ranks higher than most busines grade cards because of that.  It getsonly 44 % and 34 % on two of the numbers, then 91 %, and finally, way over, at 800 % for Shader Operations.

To get a more rounded understanding of the way that graphics cards vary from class to class, see the article on multiple ranking ladders, here:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/575571

{Generational Ladders (and NTK-based shaders ranking list - "old" class markers)}

Incidentally, a business grade video device has such a narrow memory bandwidth that it tops out at 128 MBs for gaming, with extremely rare occasions of being able to offer 256 MBs, so any more RAM that that is a Marketing SCAM, nothing more!

Big Ram Scam:

Really depends on what your definition of affordable is, give us a price range and I can help you out.

Currently I am running a 5870 and it runs great, this card is only one step down from the 5970 which is virtually 2 5870's running on the same board (Multiple GPU's).

The 5450 is not by any means considered a "Gaming" card but it should run the game you may just have to turn some things down. One really big difference between the 5800 series video cards is that they support DX11.

*shrugs* Specs be what they are, I can still play DAO with no lag on very high graphics and high resolution. :-P And it was a cheap upgrade, which is what I was going for for since I had a pretty old video card before it. So yeah...I dunno. It plays DAO, which is what the OP asked, at least on my system, which admittedly is not that great (and why my first copy of DAO is a PS3 one).

Wow just checked it out, man oh man I thought I knew a good bit about computers and I guess I do but not when it comes to graphics cards.

Just make sure that when you buy a card that you are following the developers recommended or at the very least minimum recommendations.

GPU speed

Memory on the card

etc

Someone already mentioned the HD 5770, I believe, and it's right there, but it's going to need a better power supply than a stock one, so let's look at a 5670 instead (because the 5770 plus the power supply will go over the budget).

Here's a page of those at Newegg, for various prices, but I cannot recommend any from Power Color. I have had good luck with Gigabyte branded Radeons, myself.

It's a good card, very similar in performance to the HD 5670 just named to the OP.  I should caution you that technically, if you needed an answer like that, you also needed your own message for it.  This is still an open subject here, about a Low-performance card purchase that isn't nearly as good, and we need to wrap up the OP's questions.

How does the HD 5770 perform at high resolutions? (1920x1080) My brother bought one and I'm thinking of getting one myself.

Not making a new thread for this. This may be useful info for the OP.

The approximate crossover line is the number of pixels on a 4:3 screen at a resolution of 1600 by 1200; cards need to have 256 bit memory systems to handle that many and play a game well (I'm awake in the middle of my "night" for no good reason, and half asleep here -- you multiply your numbers to compare them).  The HD 5830 is the least powerful 5n00 card that would work properly with more than the number of pixels in 1600 by 1200, or back off a generation to one of the HD 4800 cards.  Also, now isn't going to be as good of a time to buy a high end card as six weeks from now will be, however.

The newest Fermi cards will be out, and the HD 5800s, most of them, will be dropping in price to make room for the new HD 6800s, as well as to hold onto any price lead that nVIDIA's new releases might threaten.  .
