CaseyH-ME2:
We actually want to make sure these characters survive the ME2 story, which ultimately is a suicide mission: some of your crew will almost certainly die. Some of the ME1 characters are back, and recruitable (more than you might think), and the ones that aren't still play an important role in the story and will be around for ME3 - which we can't say for the new characters.

CaseyH-ME2:
Another important thing to consider is that much of the fun of ME1 was the discovery of new people and places. If we made ME2 out of the same characters, you'd miss out of the fun of that discovery.

But Casey! It doesn't matter whether a character was put through the suicide mission and could potentially die, right? They're all coming back, just as they were regardless, right? Nobody wants new squad members! Discovery? Blech!

Written with extreme sarcasm. I just think it's funny how the group that insists that their surviving squad is coming back cites those quotes, yet they can't see the blatant implication that a character's particapation in the SM pretty much eliminates them as a companion character in ME3. Otherwise, they wouldn't have had to keep the Virmire Survivor out of the ME2 mix.

I know this is an Ashley/Keiden thread, but I just thought I'd take th opportunity to point out that if you're sure the VS is coming back in some significant role, then you had best be sure that the ME2 suicide squad is not.

Ashley/Kaidan, mad (completely understandable their reaction) with shepard for her/his idiotic answers.
Liara she received shepard with a kiss (if you romance her) or a hug and more words.

Equality, yeah right...balls! ¬_¬

Not necessarily.  The VS already had one brush with death on Virmire.  This puts them in an almost-equal place with ME2 squadmates at the start of ME3, right?  (Only in a slightly better position because out of Ashley and Kaidan one of them *must* be alive - but, really, either could be dead.  Out of the 12 ME2 squadmates, though, only two have to be alive for Shepard to survive.  But, still, some must live.)

i actually like on how the crew can die in me2 because at least it isnt a typical rehash of the team always surviving. it adds more realism if you think about it.

Well, there is one very simple way they could have managed to keep the VS alive and still have them involved in the suicide mission.

When you empty out the ship to fight the Collectors on their home ground, they have to stay with the ship to guard it against intruders.

Shepherd: We need someone to protect the Normandy.
Ashley: Commander, I'll do it.
Shepherd: Thank you Ashley, I'm relieved to know the guy who ends up in the infirmary every time he fires a gun isn't left alone to guard the ship.
Joker: Hey!!!!!
Ashley: Here, have a nerfball gun. I'm fairly sure the recoil on this won't be too much stress on your bones.

And if when you survive the mission, they can pull you up.

Really, the guy with brittle bones is shooting the enemy and getting you back into the ship.

Next problem with that scene, if Joker was in the airlock, was EDI piloting the Normandy instead of him?

i assume all the spaceships have some form of autopilot. i mean current day planes do and yeah i assume EDI can fly the ship when needed, especially after being unshackled.

I am hoping instead of the VS testifying against Shepard, they could testify for Shepard.
It's hard to hate a character that saves your ass.

I think the VS would definately defend Shep. But if you cheated on them I can see Bioware making them argue that Cerberus has been controlling Shep and therefore is not the real Shep. I would really hate this but I can see Bioware making that the consequence for cheating.

It's an interesting theory, but a romanced VS arguing that Shepard's being controlled just based on romance status would come off as:
  • "Cerberus must have been controlling Shepard; he snogged some other chick (don't ask me how I know this).  Therefore his actions must be controlled by others because I'm just too awesome to leave."  ;)
I also doubt Bioware would integrate such detailed romance informaton into the main plot.  A romanced character (from either game) will most likely receive a few extra conversations/cutscenes or, at most, the old favorite of "choose you LI/best friend/most used squadmate over a larger number of people" plot point.

Anyway, I see Ashley and Kaidan using a potential trial or tribunal as a chance to back Shepard up on the reality of the Reaper threat, whatever their personal opinion of Cerberus or Shepard's relationship with the organization.

@LadyJaneGrey: Yeah it is a pretty farfetched theory. You are probably right with the extra dialouge choices.

Well, if they choose to do it based on an ME2 decision, that option could already be decided, depending on how you responded to the VS on Virmire.

Paragon: Yes, I trust you absolutely.
Neutral: This isn't about our personal feelings, but I trust you are making the right decisions.
Renegade: I don't trust you anymore.

They could also have a scenario to alter that outcome prior to the trial, with the appropriate 3 wheel choices to change the previous flags in the imported savegame.

I ended up making all my Sheps faithful after no ME2 DLC for Ashley and Kaidan.  I will wait for ME3 to see how the relationships end.

Tony Shepard and Zelda Shepard might not make it past ME1, if it ends badly.  :(

And I promise, I'll update the OP in a bit, with the new ideas that have been flowing in.

I have to admit, given the likelihood of starting the game in the Sol System, I'll be disappointed if the Virmire Survivor isn't one of your starting squadmates as you escape through the Charon Relay to bring humanity's most-epic-S.O.S.-evar!!!! to the rest of the galaxy.

Other than that, I have no specifics in mind.

Had to post this because I'm excited. WARNING: This could be false, and, well spoilerish but in a good way.

A thread just popped up saying someone was looking at a photobucket-scan of his friend's GI issue, where he states Kaidan/Ash look like they're squadmates in ME3.

*crosses fingers* Please don't let this be a troll, for the love of all that is holy.

We can't link or send out things, but there is word that some people have the new GI and it has something like a list of
characters who will be playable at some point in the game, though not necessarily permanent squad members.

That list includes, Liara, the VS, and Garrus

It could be a fake, but if it's a fake it's a well-coordinated hoax, and I've heard different reports to this effect from a few different sources. So yeah, grain of salt, but possibly legit.

Google is my friend!  This definately seems real, there's a scan of an image of Ashley with her hair down, and she looks really pretty!  I definately want that hair for my femshep.
The gist of it -
Confirmed squadmates: Liara, Ashley/Kaiden, Garrus (if he's alive) and... James Sanders... possibly the guy from the trailer.
Confirmed to appear, but not guaranteed as squaddies: Wrex, Mordin, Legion, and Anderson. Obviously, if they live.
The game will by default feature a "previously on Mass Effect" comic to make decisions with if starting from scratch.
The Illusive Man also plays a prominent role, spoiler deleted here.
The RPG elements are being beefed up, not going back to ME1, but giving more freedom with the character skills. Skill trees will be larger, and powers will evolve several times instead of just once, offering even more freedom. Weapons are ME2 style, with a set list, but mods make a return, not in the ME1 style, but allowing you to swap out different parts such as barrels, scopes, and so on, which effect both the weapon's combat performance and its appearance.
All classes can wield all weapons unhindered now, but will have limited slots to carry them. Only the Soldier can carry all weapons at once. Probably means Adept, Engineer, and Sentinal will be limited to two, and Vanguard and Infiltrator will have three.
Also mentioned: The game will have numerous endings, some good, some bad, and who you have in your squad and which allies you recruit can have a drastic effect on which are available.
