No, I'm pretty sure the only way you might be broken-up for good with either VS is if you choose the more hostile "You just won't listen" options during that conversation.  The devs have never really clarified what the mechanics of that are though, so it's hard to know.

No matter how ugly that conversation gets, nothing breaks you up with them, as far as I can tell, because the picture in Shepard's cabin is still up and you'll still get the Shepard looking at the picture scene in the place of the usual romance scene which I can only assume is there to flag that you sustained the romance for that file.

Good point. Well, that just make it that much easier for them to track cheating:

Had an ME1 LI? Yes.
Had an ME2 LI? Yes.

Congratulations: you cheated!

I'm hoping for some socializing scenes with Ash.

I didn't get angry with them during our short half-baked reunion on Horizon, so theorectically, our relationship is still a stable one (FYI, my Shep is a Fem, so we were never involved that way).

I'm going to be kinda sad if we get back to earth and it's a case of "Hello Shepherd, let's go to trial".
The grand reunion deserves at least 5-10 minutes of talking and getting reacquanted a little.

I get that most of the game is probably going to be "go to VS station, start chatting, Paragon to get back on their good side".
But that's no reason why we can't start that before the trial.
Preferably by giving Shepherd the chance to explain the reasons why they were working with Cerberus that they didn't get on Horizon.

And yes, the game is tracking your cheater status.
If you cheated, the picture goes facedown so your new LI can't see it when they come in.
And the aforementioned flags are recording that in the savegame.

Formula:
Romanced Ashley/Kaiden or Liara (3 seperate flags, 1 option checked)
Romanced ME2 LI (6 flags, assuming Kelly counts! 1 option checked)
equals cheater!

I am hoping Kaidan doesn't have Jacob's body, based on what I've seen from OXM (or was it Xbox World...). >:[

Hells no >.<
I like Kaidan just the way he is and although he might change a bit in ME3, a physical overhaul is just NO >:o

Edit: Just red the 'character re-design' part from this thread (WARNING! contains many major spoilers in there): social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/103/index/7352856

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't panic overly much..  It's being done by the same people who did the original characters, so.. I don't think Kaidan will be running around using Jacob's body, I think  Hopefully  otherwise it will be just weird

It still doesn't explain why Ashley is running around with Miranda's figure.

I get that the models have to be overhauled for the new engine, but my FemShep didn't change that much in the, erm, areas of contention for ME2.

Ooh heck, I just had a scary thought!
What if FemShep gets the Miranda treatment?
I'd never be able to take her seriously if she looked like that!

Bottom line, I think it's crude fanservice, pure and simple.
The majority of gamers are male and want hot females to get with.

Although, why does large "forward bouyancy tanks" feature into that every time!
A woman can be just as appealing without two kettledrums on her chest.

And seriously, it doesn't make sense for a hardline soldier like Ashley.
It's a complicated issue to explain (relating to physical conditions placed on the body by a woman who exercises regularly), but the simple version is, most women who are kickbutt heavy duty fighters don't have that kind of figure.
Which was why I thought Ashley had that kind of physique in ME1, it's the body of a fighter, not a lover.

As an aside, how many ME players romanced Kaiden instead of Ashley?
I'm curious if he's got the fanbase numbers that Ashley does.
Is it equal or slanted heavily towards one particular VS?
That is, assuming Liara isn't stuffing up this particular exercise in statistics (and she probably is!).

Just thought I'd drop it here... =)

Taken from Casey Hudson's Twitter:

Have James Vega, Liara, Ash/Kaidan and Garrus been declared as full timers yet or just confirmed as squad mates?

CaseyDHudson
We've confirmed James, Liara, Ash/Kaidan, Garrus, and Tali as squad members / main chars in
#ME3. More to reveal though.

You're right about the DLC.  That's why Brody changed the title, main post, and name of the group to address ME3.  Many of the characterization suggestions and concerns are valid for both.  :)

I don't think you'll ever find accurate numbers on how many people like a particular character.  Most players don't bother to post on BSN or frequent the character threads.  Even the romance data Bioware tracks wouldn't help much since many characters are popular despite being in the "just friends" zone.

I personally like both Ashley and Kaidan (then again, I only really dislike one squaddie in the whole series), romanced or not.  Ashley was my canon Shepard's best friend.

Yeah, it's a pity about the DLC.

ME3 comes out in like, what, 6 months or so?
That's plenty of time to squeeze out one more DLC for the VS.
But considering that BioWare have specifically said there are no more DLC pending, it's not going to happen.

I look forward to having Ashley, Garrus and Tali back to play with again.

However, there are two squadmates I will be really disappointed if I don't get to bring into play:
A Krogan (Wrex or Grunt, either will do!) and Legion.
I always had a Krogan on my squad, because I like them the most of the non-human species, plus, they're darn near unstoppable and bring so much damage they can win battles all by themselves.
Legion is my next favorite squadmember, because his Geth abilities made him the equal of a soldier. I had him fulfilling the duties that were normally assigned to the absent Ashley Williams, because I didn't have another soldier to partner with Grunt.
And don't bring up Massani, or I'll have Grunt kick you several times in the quad!
Plus, I liked to have Legion partner with Tali and visit the Quarians, just for the fun of it!
I'd love to see that continue in ME3.

Ashley and Wrex are my favorite team of all time and I'd like to revisit that dynamic in ME3.
Heck, it could even be Ashley and Grunt, just as long as she gets a Krogan partner!

Indulging in my favorite hobby of game file sneaking, I found the VS photos from the frame:
Image IPB
Image IPB
Oddly enough, these were in a file labelled Romance (ME1 Romance I think).
Kinda strange, since it bears the name of the many cuddle with LI  scenes, but is not actually one.......

I am puzzled that the photos show them in armor.
I'd expect them to be wearing their "Alliance uniforms", considering these pictures were most likely taken in a casual setting far away from combat.
Well, at least Kaiden isn't wearing ice cream (Phoenix) armor this time......

Well, if you saw a hardened Alliance Soldier and a Krogan charging at you with weapons drawn, wouldn't it be brown trouser alert time?
I'd love to see Ashley make some quips with Grunt, so a team with them together would be interesting.

I know the Mass Effect toy line fell apart for some reason (shame shame shame!), but if they do another line for ME3, would you want to get a Ashley and/or Kaiden figure?

When Ashley got her redesigned model for ME3.

To be very blunt, I'm not going to take her seriously with two bowling balls on her chest and in a leather bodysuit.

To me, it looks if they're turning Ashley into Miranda.

Hey, it works for Miranda, who's genetically engineered to appeal to the "male ideal" of female beauty and she's from the upper class of society, so can wear whatever she wants.

But it does not work for Ashley.

Ashley by contrast, she's a common soldier and she's from the "hard worker" population base, so my impression is she doesn't care how she looks, being more about practicality then dressing up.

I'm even more miffed that Kaiden (no offense intended) has hardened armor, equivalent to what Garrus wears and Ashley, who's always worn the highest level of armor, doesn't have any!

As I understand it, Kaiden wears light armor, Garrus wears medium armor and Ashley wears heavy armor.

Granted, they removed armor classes in ME2, but they still appear to have keep the designs.
Which, even if the armor is classless, it still looks like light, medium and heavy armor.

So, it makes a mockery of the system for Kaiden to wear something he can't and Ashley not to wear any at all.

I'll clarify, when did we get a picture of her redesign?  I've only seen a picture of her from the shoulders up and, while I can see why someone would feel like her design *might* have gone in the direction of Miranda, I don't see a reason to jump to that conclusion.

hopefully, Ash will get to wear actual armor into combat and the jumpsuit like jacket that she was wearing is an off duty and/or shipwear. as for the degrees of armor - that flew out the window when Shepard got the iconic armor in ME2 - soldier got to wear the same exact set as the adept, so I'm not surprised at Kaidan in heavy armor and its possibly that Ash will simply get a female version of it, with a tweak or several. or maybe even something like Vasir's armor.

give kaidan a good weapon selection.
SMG and shotgun imo. dont think any characters have been given that setup before.
