I could see Ash giving a book of poetry, or maybe a recording of her reading her favorites. I can't think of what Kaidan might give. Maybe one of his adventure novels? Not quite the same. An exotic strain of fish perhaps? ;)

I like the poetry book idea for Ash.

Fish from Kaidan? He'd be very disappointed if he knew what happened to my Shep's previous ones. Posted Image
I think he'd give something more practical, because he seems like a very practical person.

Liara gave Shepard his tags (although being Alliance it would have made more sense if Ash or Kaidan gave them to him) Ash probably will give Shep a poetry book,or a recording of her reciting Ulysses, now Kaidan, that is a hard one to think of. Kaidan giving Shep a poetry book wouldn't make much sense after all, lol.

Dont know about you guys but I personally would like to see something like the Alliance to arrest Shepard and send him to court to explain his actions with Cerberus...in this scenario Ashley and Kaidan could play a big role (hell they could be the ones to arrest shepard personaly) and it also could give the chance for more Anderson dialogue.

I also wouldnt mind seeing Ashley/Kaidan in an N7 armor...I mean I see a very high potential that they joined the N7 ranks in Alliance military.

I like that idea. Although I think it should be reserved to be used as the prologue of ME3. But the VS DLC could be used as foreshadowing of those events. Showing the player that the Alliance and Citidal council are planning to apprehend Shepard no matter what.

There isn't much foreshadowing needed: you never saw a body, and everyone and their mother is blatantly assuming the VC is dead.

I know "surviving the nuke" is farfetched, but I don't see any other way for them to introduce a villain we'll care about. Harbinger failed miserably in this regard, and so will any new face they bring in.

Three reasons I can see:

1). Bringing back the squadmate that was killed on Virmire would cheapen their sacrifice. That decision was the most heart-wrenching one in teh entirety of ME1, and to belittle it like that doesn't really seem like something a good gaming company would do.
2). Anyone caught at ground zero of a nuclear explosion would be vaporized, end of story. Even if they decided to introduce cloning, how would they explain being able to isolate their exact ashen DNA out of all the other debris there? Which leads me to another point:
3). Cloning is (in my opinion) an asspull; something that is done when you can't think of anything reasonable to do that would allow a dead, dead, dead character to return.

As for introducing a villain we'll care about, what about The Illusive Man? Ambassador Udina? Admiral Hackett? A wholly new character that we can really loathe? Sorry, I'm not buying the idea of forcing the Virmire squadmate back into the story just to get a 'villain we care about'.

Warning: Possible slight LOTSB spoiler.

For a villain we care about?  I was totally convinced that the Council was the Shadow Broker.  (Especially after what's-her-face was all "You think I betrayed the council? Scoff!")  What if they go rogue for ME3?  That's a villainous entity I think everyone would be dedicated to taking down.  Don't any of you tell me you wouldn't love a chance to haul in that turian councilman.  :police:

Personally, I'm hoping that Shepard gets sent to assist the newest human Specter... Ash/Kaidan.

I'd love it if the e-mail Shepard gets about it is from Liara; even without having completed Lair of the Shadow Broker, Liara is still Shepard's friend and ally and a very good information broker.

Beyond that... one of the themes in Mass Effect 2 was the growth of the characters introduced in Mass Effect. Tali went from being the scared and inexperienced kid to being a go-to agent for the Quarians, a person they sent in to lead teams in Geth space, and apparently a candidate for Admiral. Wrex left behind the life of a mercenary to reclaim his efforts to unify the Krogan and make them great again. Garrus essentially followed in Shepard's footsteps. Liara went from from being a scared academic to being one of the three most dangerous people in the galaxy (the Illusive Man and Shepard being the other two, of course). With Tali, Wrex, Garrus, and Liara evolving in purpose and ability, Ash and Kaiden deserve to as well.

Oh, and you know what else I want? An interview with Emily Wong, where Shepard can basically set the galaxy straight on everything.

I would like to think he's give a picture of the two of them together.  Assuming they even had time to take photos on an outing or something.  It sounds like the Alliance just put them straight into looking for geth pockets after Sovereign's attack.
Maybe he'd give her his omni tool?  That's practical and techie.

A non-romantic gift idea:

The VS gives Shepard the heartfelt letter written either by one of Ash's sisters, or Kaidan's father (or mother, I can't recall if they were meant to be alive or dead, or if this was even mentioned...):

It was written after the "death" of Shepard, and was addressed to the VS, in sorrow for the loss of both the Virmire Casualty and Shep. You can insert all sorts of stuff from both story variables (wouldn't it be awesome to acknowledge a romanced Kaidan/Ash this way, if s/he was in a romance with Shep and still Virmired?) and Shep's past (ie. history and service record) in it.

For bonus schmaltz (of the "good" sort), they could allow us to contact said person in question for a short VO only convo in the "briefing room".

It occurs to me that it'd be awesome to have a crew picture of the original Normandy. Kind of like the pictures you see of sports teams after a championship. Shepard, in the center. Around her would be Liara, Wrex, Tali, Garrus, Ashley/Kaidan, Joker, and around them all the other members of the Normandy crew. Bridge staff, marines, techs, all of them. Something to put on the wall and remind Shepard of a happy day.

In practice, a nice idea. However, Garrus and (I think) Wrex aren't necessary recruits. And it is possible to recruit Liara after only the VS and Tali remain aboard.

True, you need either Garrus or Wrex to trigger the mission to save Tali, and Liaras mission can be saved for last to trigger the Ilos mission.
So in that sense there is a possibility that the whole crew never really met eachother like they were supposed to in some playthroughs.

If I recall, ME1 imports that don't pick up Garrus don't get anything unusual in the Archangel recruitment mission. I think that the explanation that makes most sense is that Shepard recruits them after saving the Citadel, sometime after the game ends.

I like that idea.
Perhaps he's loaded it with:
photos/vids of them
photos of his childhood with narration
letters to her--either that he wrote during their separation or that he wrote for specific situations--i.e. "Open when on Tuchanka"  "Open after kicking Blue Sun butt" etc
some of his favorite songs
and some programs to help her hack faster/useful programs

That would be sweet.  Ash gives Shep a poetry book, or her dad's recordings of her reciting Ulysses.  Kaidan gives Shep that.

On another note: updated the OP again.  Rearranged, streamlined, and emphasized certain aspects that fans have been most vocal about.

Doesn't this weapon already exist in the game?

Judging from what the Codex says about the Collector Particle Beam weapon, it is a portable Thanix cannon.

Frankly, i believe that the Horizon indroduction was Biowares way to say that they dont intend to have Kai/Ash back as squadmates in ME3.They may have a role in there but i bet it will be a small one. Liara didnt have the same treatment.neither Garrus ot Tali. So, if they want to be fair to all ME1 fans they owe us that DLC.

This is a possibilty, unfortunately, tho I'd hope Bioware wouldn't turn out duplicitious like that.

They DID claim, on several different occasions, that the VS and Liara were spared the possibility of dying during ME2. This implies a more substantial role in ME3 than is possible for anyone who was a squaddie in ME2 (except Liara).

It would be a pretty hefty middle finger from the devs, if the reason to spare the VS was to just give them another Horizon style cameo, even if it wasn't as hostile as the ME2 encounter.

I prefer to stay positive on the matter since really I have no idea what they're plotting. ME1 did so many things right in the story and romance sections that I have a hard time believing they just chucked all those writers and ideas out the window. I'd rather believe that 2 took everything away so they could give it all back in 3. A bit of a cheap trick, but it's better to believe this than consider the alternative. It's easier on my delicate constitution.

I cannot see the VM survivor being an N7. They have to get chosen for that then train and as they aren't anywhere near N7, if they have any N rank at all, which I doubt, at the end of ME1. Then it is gonna take a hell of a lot more than 2 years to get to Rank 7!
As for Specter status? Hate to say it but no way the Turian/Salarian/Asari council would give that status to Ash as she is more than a little anti-alien, to say the least. As for Kaidan, he's too nice, much as I love his character. Not enough steel in him.
If it is a Human run council, I still cannot see one good reason to choose either Ash or Kaidan. What have they done that is outstanding, which is the mark of a specter? Not a lot. No Last One Standing for either of them, no Holding the Line. Nothing to mark them apart from a million other folk like them, sadly.
