How come there is no moral struggle, no--"Am I still human?", "Am I still ME?". Instead we just die, and then--BAM!--we're alive again. And everyone just shrugs and says, "Sweet.". It's just WEIRD!

Great point. Just goes to further highlight what a terribly vapid character 'Shepard' is. In fact, this guy/girl barely qualifies as a character.

My idea was more directed to handling all of Shepard's reaction to dying, A/K's reaction and the reaction of the galaxy as a whole. Not just Shepard's lack of reaction so far. (Sorry if I gave the wrong impression) I think the fact that Shepard died is just as important as the idea of him/her coming back to life.

Anyway, this is the (suddenly surprisingly active) lurker signing off for the year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the Ashley/Kaidan fans out there - lurker or poster alike! Also, many thanks to Brodyaha for setting up this thread and group in the first place, and keeping it going for 4 months!

See you next year! (If I don't go back to full time lurking...)

Hi guys, I'm one of those crazy lurkers, too. I just wanted to de-cloak and say a couple things.

Firstly, I think the memorial idea is very touching. And in response to the question about Shepard struggling with the fact that she is back from the dead--this bothers me too! How come there is no moral struggle, no--"Am I still human?", "Am I still ME?". Instead we just die, and then--BAM!--we're alive again. And everyone just shrugs and says, "Sweet.". It's just WEIRD!

*snip*

Yeah, most of the time I got the impression that they take the whole 'death' thingy more like a joke. I'd love to see a scene where Shep and K/A walk past a Citadel Advertisement the one with an Asari saying, "Shepard, you've been dead.." and have Shep hardens her jaw and say, "Not funny." [or something along those lines :P] then begin talking about the whole experiance with the VS. Hell, give them Miranda's data or even take them to a brief field trip to the Lazarus Station as an optional assignment.
A visit to Shep's memorial would be nice too. I agree that there should be one in the Citadel :wizard:

However in some sense I could understand why Shep is being an absolute wood the whole time in ME2 (hey, she's surrounded by Cerberus agents. They're horibly evil in ME1 :o ) can't really blame her for not wanting to let her guard down.
But I want to have the opportunity where Shep can show her 'human' side. The VS were there with her from the start, from when before Shep becomes the 1st human Spectre and especially if the VS is a LI, I can see my Shep opening up to them as 'Shepard' not as 'Commander' Shepard.

I like to think that those internal struggles are played out in the mind of the player. Mass effect never really forces emotions or internal thought processes on the player. I like that, that way i can fill in the blank spots with my own thought process.

I would at least think having the option to even express those emotions would be nice, like in LotSB.

True, but there is a difference between not forcing players and Shepard acting like a brick and sprouting lines like "I got better.". LotSB handled it very well, I think. The player had a choice and if s/he didn't want her/his Shepard to express doubt, fear or any kind of emotion you could pick an option that more or less avoided it. I hope that a VS DLC would handle the matter in a similiar way.

Agreed.  Give Shepard an option to call Cerberus out on their BS to Kaidan and Ashley.  Or not.  There's five different dialogue stems that can potentially be used within conversations.

There should be an, "Am I still me, do you still believe I'm really Shepard, or a Cerberus puppet," option in there somewhere.

I wish BioWare would make good use of those five options more often. Posted Image

You know, perhaps they will yet. I mean, we still have Mass Effect 3 incoming and ol' Shep will have his (I say his for simplicity's sake) greatest challenge ever with the Reapers invading, and then having to find allies and methods to counter this ancient foe. No pressure, right? Wrong! I have a feeling that unless Bioware's story people decide to swallow some stupid pills during the development of ME3, that they'll use this as an opportune moment to show some chinks in the Commander's armor and show a more human dynamic to the character, and by armor I mean the mental kind.

I'm thinking they need to come up with custom armor jobs, one each for Ashley and Kaiden.

Ashley's a heavy hitter, so her armor would be Heavy class, made to endure lots of damage.

Probably with mechanical strength enchancement, to absorb recoil from heavy weapons and strong melee damage damage to go unarmed if need be.

Kaiden, well, I'm visualizing an energy panelized setup.

His armor would have all these glowing plates which are inbuilt shields.

They could also function as a dark energy booster, to enhance his biotics.

His armor wouldn't be a heavy one though, more a lightweight version with tech based shielding.

A non combat DLC would indeed be interesting to see, one that's more about investigation and checking the facts.

You could even have that feed into ME3 with the results of the trial being acknowledged somehow.

As in, you choose the ending. Shepherd cleared of the charges, accepting the punishment or an all out gun battle as the Normandy crew comes in guns blazing to extract their Commander.

I did quite enjoy the non-combat aspects of Kasumi's recruitment mission and the Shadow Broker, it would be nice to see that again.

I support this or any other DLC - On a DISC. On a disc is the extent of what I want.

I would like to see some religious conflicts between Ashley and Shepard.

I never liked Ashley but i tink her character is unique in terms of how religious she is. And since she is religious she can't just believe Shepard died and came back from the dead. She would have to ask questions, and Shepard could answer according to his/her alignment renegade would turn her into an athiest, and paragon would reaffirm her belief in god.

While I'd like to see a conversation that handles the topic of Shepard having died and Ash's belief in God in a VS DLC, I don't want Shepard to be able to turn her into an atheist or influence her faith in any other way.

Faith is something very personal and it was enough for me that Shepard was able to influence her views on aliens in ME1. Shepard should not be able to influence every aspect about a character. It is not particularly believable and especially with Ash faith - just like her love for poetry - is an essential part of her character.

Agreed. There has to be a line at which player influence stops, otherwise you couldn't maintain consistent characters. At the very least you would have a bunch of very weak-willed characters, and Ashley is far from being weak-willed. Remember, Shepard wasn't even able to convince her to a threesome with Liara, and I think her faith runs a lot deeper still.

However, I am in support of the Shepard death angle getting more attention in conversations--what we had in ME2 was almost nonexistent--but an emphatic 'no' to using it as a means to twist either character to Shepard's will. I certainly don't see any such situation as having to necessarily force a religious perspective on a player, but it could give the option of that route or a more secular, non-religious "I just don't remember anything" dialogue path.

I think when Ash's faith came up in ME1, the player had five or six options to chose from. BioWare could do something similar again and they could, as Brody already suggested, make good use of those five to six options that are possible with the dialogue wheel.

Very eloquently put!  And I agree.

I wouldn't mind Bioware giving us options on how our own Shepards have been influenced on the matter, like they did in ME1, ("You know how they say you never see an atheist in a foxhole?  I've been in a lot of foxholes,") or give our Shepards the ability to say that they believe in science, not a higher power, without turning it into a huge friendship-breaking conversation.

But would Ash and Thane be the same characters if their beliefs were taken away?  Personally, I don't think so.

I may be in the minority here, but I kinda like Ashley being religious and it really fits her character imho. She has a very strong personality, tough, independent and caring at the same time. Wouldn't want to change her in any other way.

My favorite moments with Ash:

Shep : "Any interest in there, Chief?"

Ash : "No Ma'am. Besides, scuttlebutt says he's already sweet on someone else." *smiles at Shep*

I squeed immediately

Hmm.., wish there could be more moments like this in ME2, ME3 or the VS DLC

January? February? I don't care how long I have to wait as long as this time it's Ash and Kaidan related.

Quoting because this needs to be heard ... a lot.

Fav Moments w/ Kaiden:
Shepard: (Speaking about Liara) Remember, I saw her first.
Kaiden: They say Asari are open to that sort of thing, ma'am.

Fav Moments w/ Ash:
Shepard: Dismissed ... Chief.
Ash: Ma'am.

But, yeah, we need a VS DLC soon. Not want, need.

Shepard was a hollow shell in ME2.  It made me sad.  :(
