I just purchased Dragon Age today and have not been able to start it.  When I click Play, it says, "Failed to authenticate the disk. Please insert the correct disk and try again."

I have patched the game, and attempted to run it through a cd emulator instead of my normal external dvdrom.  Neither had any effect.

Does anyone have an idea to help me?

Well, it maybe a problem of trying to use an external DVD drive, but its hard to tell. You could try a different USB port to start with. Also, if you DO have a CD emulator installed. Be sure to disable it completely. As it may be seeing that instead of the external and looking for the disk there. If all else fails EA allows you to download a digital version that doesn't need the disc using the EADM . You just need your key to activate and thats it.

Thanks for your responses.

I had fully disabled my cd emulators to see if there was some conflict. I know some copy protections have a problem with them. It didn't help though. I also tried enabling the cd emulator and unplugging the real dvdrom. It didn't help either. But you know what, when I replugged the dvdrom, it magically worked. I think we can assume the problem was with my drive. Or perhaps the dvd itself.

The EADM allows you to download and install the game, but you still need the disk to run it. I am having this same message "Failed to authenticate the disk. Please insert the correct disk and try again." and I wish I could just get a digital version but apparently not.

I am running into this issue as well, fresh out of the box. I installed fine, it launches the autorun fine, but I can't run the game. The CD drive is a standard internal drive mapped to D.

I'm also having the very same issue with my computer's DVD drive. I've successfully installed, updated, and tried reinstalling both the game AND the DVD drive. I can access the disk files and run "autorun," but further than that the play button still causes the "Failed to authenticate the disk" error. Please help!

I'm having the same issue. Funnily enough the game *used* to work. Now, even though nothing has changed since I last played it, it doesn't. Am at a total loss. Loving the complete lack of tech support too, there's a bajillion topics on this and no one has offered a definitive solution.

Your problem if you get the install and then get an error saying “Failed to authenticate the disk” is that the copy protection on the CD or DVD is out the red book standard or Format of the CD, DVD data on the disk should be in. As I Pc support engineer I seen a lot of this. Older CD, DVD and some new ones tend not read the disk if they are out side the red book standard. The disk when it is Authenticating is looking for a “fault” on the CD, DVD coped disk cannot mostly burn this fault on to a disk. All you can do is see if there is a firmware for your DVD, CD drive. If not you need a new drive.

There was lots of problem like this when half life 2 came out. I was working for a Pc manufactory at the time. We got a Pc of the line and had this problem, 10 DVD drives later we still had the problem. Got a firmware update for the DVD drive and it was fixed.

For user that had the game working if you got any thing like demon tools or light scribe software try uninstall that it might help.

My DVD device is listed under manufactoror as:  Generic DVD/CDRW max48

Where can I find firmware for this?

Hi ok when it say Generic DVD/CDRW it means that with is
what windows is seeing the device as and what drivers it is using?

Firmware is not the same as drivers. Put simply firmware is software
that run only on your DVD device and no under windows.

You are going have to open up your pc and take out the DVD
drive on the top of the driver there will a sticker with the info you need. It say
some like.

“LG model 5100” or “TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-S202N” the later been
what is on my drive. Note I go the download version so I do not have a DVD.

If you post up your DVD make and model I see if I can find
you a firmware update Note not all drive will have updates.

Yes, there are usually firmware updates for optical drives that improve the reliability of reading/burning discs. Make sure your using the latest.

Good luck finding firmware updates for older DVD drives. I had this exact problem for 2 weeks. Game installs perfectly from my DVDROM drive but after installing and launching, clicking PLAY gives the above error message.  EA Tech support is a chimp doing keyword searches on your email subject line (i.e., no help there so don't bother).  I have been using a 16X Benq 1650V DVD-ROM dated November 2006 for three years (obviously?).  It has worked on every game I've ever played on it, including recent ones like Fallout 3. Never had a problem running games before but now, due to this marvelous security screen, I need an update but can't find info on firmware updates specific to this drive, even from the manufacturer.  My solution was to replace the Benq drive with a Sony CRX-300E DVD R/W I had laying around, an 8X drive made in 2003. This simple swap solved the problem immediately, without any driver or firmware updates. The difference in drive speed does not appear to be much of an issue when playing. I've played for an hour or more with the drive tray open, although this doesn't necessarily mean it will work that way all the time.

Way to go EA...  Image IPB

Found ways to solve this without so much complication as described here. Saw solution on a torrent site. Copy SKIDROW folder into bin_ship folder. WORKS!

I have the same problem, but cannot find the SKIDROW folder :/ In my case, the game is so unstable in windows 7 it crashes the whole pc on a regular basis, and doesn;t even like to save files. Every other game works fine but this one. So... I tried using a virtualbox in xp mode (since regular xp compatibility mode failed), at that time i ran into this problem

I was able to play the game before and now I get the same error. I have tried so many things even talked to an EA customer support agent and that didn't help. Can anyone help me?

I don't see my summary of the situation anywhere in this old message thread.  There were many better ones to have chosen, if only Bioware's amateur web mavens would work on the Search to turn it into something useful.

Meanwhile, they do not openly admit to having added any copy protection other than a "disk check", but far too many optical drives won't work, including brand new high quality parts such as those from Plextor (what I personally wanted for my game PCs).  Most of the time, this surfaces during an aborted install, with a "Data Error" message.  In that case, we often suggest borrowing an external DVD long enough to run the install, because the disk check will work normally, far more often than the install will, for some of the drives that EA's crap won't work on.

I ended up using the Sony drive in my printer server to install from, from across my LAN.  Some folks have had some success creating folders on their hard drives to install from.

The final, last resort (in my view because of my not-so-broad version of "Broad Band" internet) is using the hard copy CD Key to unlock a digital download from the EA store.  Since I haven't done it, I can't describe that process, but it eliminates the disk check.
