I have patched the game, and attempted to run it through a cd emulator instead of my normal external dvdrom. Neither had any effect.
Does anyone have an idea to help me?

I had fully disabled my cd emulators to see if there was some conflict. I know some copy protections have a problem with them. It didn't help though. I also tried enabling the cd emulator and unplugging the real dvdrom. It didn't help either. But you know what, when I replugged the dvdrom, it magically worked. I think we can assume the problem was with my drive. Or perhaps the dvd itself.

There was lots of problem like this when half life 2 came out. I was working for a Pc manufactory at the time. We got a Pc of the line and had this problem, 10 DVD drives later we still had the problem. Got a firmware update for the DVD drive and it was fixed.
For user that had the game working if you got any thing like demon tools or light scribe software try uninstall that it might help.

Your problem if you get the install and then get an error saying “Failed to authenticate the disk” is that the copy protection on the CD or DVD is out the red book standard or Format of the CD, DVD data on the disk should be in. As I Pc support engineer I seen a lot of this. Older CD, DVD and some new ones tend not read the disk if they are out side the red book standard. The disk when it is Authenticating is looking for a “fault” on the CD, DVD coped disk cannot mostly burn this fault on to a disk. All you can do is see if there is a firmware for your DVD, CD drive. If not you need a new drive.
My DVD device is listed under manufactoror as: Generic DVD/CDRW max48
Where can I find firmware for this?

what windows is seeing the device as and what drivers it is using?
Firmware is not the same as drivers. Put simply firmware is software
that run only on your DVD device and no under windows.
You are going have to open up your pc and take out the DVD
drive on the top of the driver there will a sticker with the info you need. It say
some like.
“LG model 5100” or “TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-S202N” the later been
what is on my drive. Note I go the download version so I do not have a DVD.
If you post up your DVD make and model I see if I can find
you a firmware update Note not all drive will have updates.

Meanwhile, they do not openly admit to having added any copy protection other than a "disk check", but far too many optical drives won't work, including brand new high quality parts such as those from Plextor (what I personally wanted for my game PCs). Most of the time, this surfaces during an aborted install, with a "Data Error" message. In that case, we often suggest borrowing an external DVD long enough to run the install, because the disk check will work normally, far more often than the install will, for some of the drives that EA's crap won't work on.
I ended up using the Sony drive in my printer server to install from, from across my LAN. Some folks have had some success creating folders on their hard drives to install from.
The final, last resort (in my view because of my not-so-broad version of "Broad Band" internet) is using the hard copy CD Key to unlock a digital download from the EA store. Since I haven't done it, I can't describe that process, but it eliminates the disk check.
