Hi all I recently got Mass Effect and its a great game I'm kicking my self for not playing it earlier. I recently took my first away mission on a planet and ran across a rock cluster that is a Uranium rock, but I don't know what to do to get it. I can get the crosshairs to pop up and tell me what it is but I can't use the interact button to get it or anything. I am playing on the PC version if that helps with the answer at all. I just would like to know how to interact with these items for when I find them in the future, thanks!
A Little help for a noob about finds on planets

You need to get pretty close to it before you can interact with it. After that you'll get the standard decryption minigame. If you complete it, the deposit will be "surveyed" and you'll get some creds and xp. If you fail, I think you can just retry until you get it right.

Some scans require a high Hacking or Decryption skill to allow you to proceed with an interaction. If you're a class with those abilities such as Engineer, you can upgrade those to Hack/Decrypt harder objects. If not, taking a squadmate who uses tech and upgrading their Hack/Decryption skills will work the same. Specifically that means Kaiden, Garrus, or Tali.

You also need to get out of the vehicle, if you aren't doing so.

Mass Effect Wiki has maps of every planet marked with every item and location of interest, if you're like me and hate missing things.

The mineral scanning has nothing to do with electronics/decryption skill. Just get out of the Mako and get close enough to interact and complete the minigame.
As tmk said they contribute xp and credits. They are also used to fulfil the mineral collection quest.

Also have FUN looking for things that do NOT appear on the Mako's radar, are not marked on the map and are NOT listed/shown in the Prima Guide. I have found more than 5 (not including Thresher Maws), 2 were good for 2,500 EXP each (IF you kill them outside of the Mako). Getting out of the Mako to fight will get you about 2.5 times the EXP as killing it with the cannon/machine gun.

Also you can attack while in the Mako, leave a sliver of health, exit the Mako and finish them off. You will still get full XP using this method.
