Ok, so for this go-round in Redcliffe I decided to use the "no-kill" solution for Connor's little possession problem and went to the Circle of Magi for help in defeating the Desire Demon in the Fade. Once we all got back to Redcliffe I was given a choice of who to send into the Fade to fight the demon and I decided to give Jowan a chance to redeem himself. Now, after several unsuccessful attempts at defeating her final incarnation, I'm wondering if I should persevere, give it up and send Wynne or Morrigan instead, or suffer the ignominy of switching to Easy in order to finish this battle with Jowan.

Pros:
  • Story-wise, Jowan is by far the most interesting choice to send into the Fade after this demon IMO.
Cons:
  • Jowan is only at Level 10 (because that's where my PC is) and so has a limited set of abilities. The only "healing" spell he has is Drain Life (which only gives him +26 HP) and he has no Mana Drain, so runs out of mana pretty quickly and has to resort to poking Miss Thing with his staff for 7 or 8 damage while he waits for his mana to charge.
  • He has no access to party items such as health poultices or lyrium potions, or lightning-resist balms or accessories, or better equipment, or anything.
  • I have never played DA:O as a mage.
Even with these disadvantages I have come pretty close to winning this battle on Normal difficulty, and am willing to keep it up for the challenge's and the story's sakes if there's a decent chance of winning it and/or if there's a story payoff if I do win with Jowan (please don't spoil me with exact details though).

Thoughts?

Fighting with Jowan is a pain (fighting with Irving is AWESOME but he has to be persuaded). When Eamon and Teagan talk about Jowan, they do mention and allow you to mention that he saved Connor but they still won't let him go. If you send him back to the Circle then maybe that will get him more leniency but other than that nothing much. I do love Jowan's dialogue in the Fade, though.

It's possible to win with Jowan in the fade on normal or hard. I haven't tried it on nightmare. Several of my wardens have sent him in as a sort of poetic justice. I usually do Redcliff fairly early in game so Jowan is usually level 10-12. Can't remember the specific spells I used, but it can be done.

Sending Jowan to the Fade is awesome for story purposes. It really gives him a chance to redeem himself and his dialogue serves as proof that he really isn't a bad person, he just made a lot of bad decisions.

Unfortunately it truly is a pain to battle the Desire Demon with Jowan. I managed to defeat her with a level 10 Jowan on nightmare but it took several attempts (probably about 4 or 5). The biggest problem for me was the rage demons since most of his spells are fire based, something the rage demons are immune against.

Finally, about his mana problems, remember you can always make use of the lyrium veins to recharge his mana, and of course, he has blood magic as a backup.

The first time I did it I eventually gave up because I found it too hard. I managed it on later playthroughs, though, but I was really saddened that it didn't help you persuade Teagan or Eamon to let him go =(. I reckon he should have at least got an epilogue slide telling you his fate.

Well she's most vulnerable to his Lightning spell (44 damage) but Arcane Bolt does 24 damage and charges faster. Stonefist doesn't seem to do anything. I hesitate to use Blood Magic because he quickly drops to <50% health anyway and spends the latter 2/3 of the fight looking for unguarded moments to cast Drain Life. According to the DA:O wiki he's also supposed to have Flame Blast and Mana Drain, but they do say they went into the Fade with him at Level 14. :/

Speaking of the lyrium veins, I can never seem to activate those in-battle, only afterwards. I can't even get the target select/eyeball icon to show up over them if I'm in battle mode. It's like trying to loot a fallen enemy while you're being attacked --the system just won't let me. Is this maybe a PS3 thing? If I could fully recharge my mana this battle could be a cakewalk.

Maybe if you let him go he should have gotten one - but that quest already is buggy and short - but I wouldn't want to see one for his return to the Circle. Basically, his being a bloog mage (even without the treason charages, poisoning, and enabling a zombie apocalpyse) is enough to either get him the Rite of Tranquility which he ran away to avoid in the first place or outright execution.

Yes, well, knowing Jowan's luck if you let him go it would be 'tales of a hedge mage in the South gave way to Abomination conquering Southern Ferelden with blood magic.'

And then it meets Flemeth, and Morrigan really can have a sister!

Is there any way to get Jowan's Intentions without resorting to mods or hacks?

Being a blood mage, you can activate blood magic and use his health to fuel spells... not ideal, but works in a pinch if you just gotta have mana right now.

Then again, I'm a wuss that plays on Casual/Easy, so it could be that advice is bunk at higher difficulties. Posted Image

Well, originally I wanted to avoid using Blood Magic so that I could go back as Jowan and say "see! I did it without blood magic, even!". But then as I kept failing in battle I thought "Oh, what the heck, who's going to know anyway. . .". But the problem is that my Jowan spends much of the battle at <50% health as it is and there's no one else around to use, so it's just not a practical option for me.

Okay, so I had to take a short detour to Soldier's Peak just to turn my PC up to 11 so that Jowan would level up too--at Level 10, he didn't even have Flame Blast yet and he's supposed to be a Fire-based mage-- and Level 11 Jowan made relatively short work of the demon. However, my quest history on my PS3 and on my online profile say that Isolde sacrificed her life to save Connor. Her Character file in my Codex also says that she's dead. However, she was standing right there for the post-exorcism discussion in which Teagan expressed his gratitude that neither she nor Connor had to be sacrificed. My PC even stole 3 silver and change from her on the way out. What the hell?

Being dead hasn't managed to shut her up either, I noticed. X-|

Yeah, the Codex entries are the wrong way around. It should be one line of code...but they haven't fixed it.

Right? But they made dialogue options around it with Irving, Teagan and Connor (and Eamon, I assume, but I haven't woken him up yet); a couple of lines of Codex, though. . .no.

Meh. It's a minor annoyance. The "people" who really need to know (Teagan, Isolde, Connor, eventually Eamon et al) know the truth. Also, I didn't get bawled out by Alistair in camp this time around (Connor died on my first playthrough, which resulted in a somewhat hypocritical hissy fit by Alistair afterwards).

People with a PC can get the Qwinn Fixpack which solves this and others. PS3 & XBOX is up to BW. Wouldn´t be too optomistic considering they want to have DA2 for next year Q1, and despite being well known issues 4 patches later they are still around.
It´s the same in Awakenings, don´t know if the ones I left at the Keep died as in the Codex or lived on as in the ending slides (hope for the latter).
