I recently installed patch 1.04 and have been crashing to desktop very frequently. Prior to patch 1.04 I never crashed, although my game performance did degrade over time. I'm running Windows 7. Is this a common issue? If so is there anything I can do to fix it?

It is common I have the same OS as you and patch 1.02 is very stable for me 1.03 and 4 are not. Now if you have an ATI CARD pm JackM he has an ATI card and this patch is very stable for him.

No, I do not know much about it. Much less than Gorath. I simply have a stable system under XP SP3 with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4850 (roughly, the equivalent of an Radeon HD 4830). Furthermore, I do not know much about Windows 7 systems.

lol ok well you seemed to of. But I think Windows 7 is the issue with a lot of people..the official dragon age website does not even have dragon age under games that have been tested and approved for windows 7. I have windows ultimate you think telling DA to run in xp compatiblity mode would help stabalize 1.04? Although that still would not explain why it runs stable on 1.02 and not 1.04..

I've been playing for just a week and it wasn't until a day ago I figured out how to patch to 1.04. It helped greatly with the load times, which was how I found the patch information, trying to fix that issue. Unfortunately, the game has crashed on me 5 times in the last 40 minutes (in the Circle of Magi). Came here to find out if this was an issue for anyone else and apparantly it is.

I'm running Vista 64-bit AMD 9750 Quad Core 2.4mhz with 8 gigs of ram with an ATI Radeon HD 3600 videocard. This game runs wonderfully and I play in max settings. I'm going to lower the settings a notch, to see if it helps.

Anyone else think it could be related to persistant gore? I'm just throwing out guesses, I know for some it was causing loading issues. I'm not very knowledgable in this area, as you can tell.

That memory leak they claimed to have removed is still present, I blame that.

Does the crash persist if you disable audio? And what of it if you disable Frame-Buffer Effects?

Hello,

Played through Origins without a single CTD, but once I installed Awakenings and therefore the 1.03 patch I had numerous crashes all seemingly involving spells being cast, namely mana clash, holy smite, cleanse area.

Tried lots of things, read a couple of people on these boards had some luck with forcing the game to use less than all the cores, for me using 2 of my 3 cores has for some odd reason gotten rid of these spell crashes, core 0 and 1.

I am running an AMD tri core and ATI graphics card.

Game runs a bit choppier but I think I will take that over the endless CTDs. 1.04 was absolutely no improvement for me over 1.03.

Anyway hope this might help

edit: Ah well this worked for a good few hours yesterday but as of today its no help, CTD when spells are cast. Maybe you might have better luck, I for one give up!

Goodd question JackM Im gonna try this.  I rolled back to 1.02 for the rest of this origins playthrough but I saved the SLOTH fight for when I go back to 1.04 and im going to extensively test it with what you said.  I have not tried it.

Yes disabling some cores 1 2 and 3 on my I7 worked for a while but like you it started crashing in the sloth fight again with the cores disabled.  I just went back to 01.02 for the origins playthrough I want to finish my dwarf noble in peace.  Then I will test it out more.

I have had the increased crash frequency after 1.04 as well. Not related to any spell or event, it just happens anywhere. I have windows xp.

I have not noticed any improvement in crash frequency or the performance degradation that happens after a while of playing, even after setting the affinity to one CPU.

I love this game but man, it is painful.

Some details about your setup (Windows version, CPU, RAM, Graphic card and driver, Audio card/chipset and driver) could help.

It makes sense that they wouldn't test DA:O on Windows 7....I mean, NO ONE uses it. /end sarcasm

It really drives me crazy that I've "upgraded" the game and the end result is a less stable game.

Yay.

Windows 7 was released about two weeks before the game was, so no, it's not officially supported. However, it's a much more stable OS in many regards... BTW... several people have reported having issues with DAO if they did the upgrade from Vista to Win 7, as opposed to doing a clean install of Win 7. The solution is to simply reinstall Dragon Age.

If you want to troubleshoot specific issues, feel free to start a new thread and post your problem and system specs. Someone here will take a whack at it.
