Quick version[/b]:
Can't install a patch because BG-ToB is already installed, but a glitch the patch fixes is still in place.  Help!  A few other minor things, too

Intro:[/b]
Alright, so I've been hunting about for a few hours now and I've finally managed to get myself signed up to a working forum (Woo!)

Before my problem, here’s a bit of a background:[/b]
* Had all three games installed for a few months now, there’s been a break of two or three months since I last played.
* All three installed without a problem.
* I’m currently playing through Baldur’s Gate II – Shadows of Amn.  I’m in chapter two, collecting the bounty for the thief’s guild.
* I have all the graphics turned up to full, my computer hasn’t been affected by this at all.
* I’m working on Windows 7 which I have had installed since a short while after its release.
* I’ve played these games before and downloaded a patch which was supposed to solve the Anomen’s Sister quest chain, the part where Anomen’s father doesn’t respond to your arrival…  I believe my computer has been wiped since then, due to a bad ass virus, so I don’t know if this affects anything at all?

I have had several problems:[/b]
1 -[/b] Certain saved games won’t let me save over them.  I click “Save” and it says “Successful”, but the game minimises and a pop up tells me it failed to save.  This works for one of my save games (Of about 4) and the Auto Save (Which is really annoying when I forget to save every 5 minutes…)  I solved this by making new save games, but when I try to delete the glitches ones, it says it’s deleted it but the “Deleted” save game is still there…

This doesn’t bother me that much, but it is a tad annoying to constantly not have auto saves because of this, and they take up save slots.

2 –[/b] This is the main problem.  NPC’s I try to talk to, be they random people or someone I –have- to take to for a quest “Appear Busy.”  I’ve tries saving and loading, sleeping, attacking them, walking off and doing six quests then coming back (So far the only one that works – They must be damn busy if it takes ‘em a few hours of real time to finish…), I’ve even tried to patch this glitch.

The glitch itself is in the BG-SoA game.  But when I try to install the patch, it tells me I can’t install it because BG-ToB is already installed.  From what I understand, this means that when I installed BG-ToB it should have automatically fixed this glitch.  It did not.  I still have to wait for stupid amounts of time before NPC’s who “Appear Busy” becomes available.

Just to make it clear – I can not install the patch.  When I try, it says I can’t because ToB is installed.  I have tried several other patches – They all installed but none of them worked…

3 –[/b] Shortcut to BG-SoA isn’t working.  This is another minor glitch but one that baffles me…  If I go to Start Menu\\Program Files\\Black Isle|BGII-ToB\\BGII-ToB (Because once you install ToB, you can play both games but you have to start it with the ToB disk) then I get an error message saying:

“C:\\Program Files\\Black Isle\\BGII – SoA\\baldur.exe is not a valid Win32 application.”

Win32?  Should I be worried about that..?  I can still play all three Baldur’s Gate games just fine, it’s only when I try to start the second game up through this method it has a problem.  Normally to start it I just open and close the (E:) (CD) drive and it comes up with the start up menu, no problems at all!

So, what have I already tried?[/b]
I recently tried playing all three games – All three work.  Only NPC’s in the second (Not sure about the third) game are always “Appearing Busy”  I have tried patching, as said above, it didn’t like the patches.  I’ve mostly just googled a bunch of these problems but all my searched have turned up fruitless…

Finally:[/b]
About a year ago, I had played with one character through the first and second game, via the import export feature.  I was halfway through the third game when I got a nasty ass virus and had to have my computer wiped.  I lost my game saves, and recently I’ve been playing through the three games again.  I’m only in the second chapter of the second game, but I’m doing as many side quests as I can find, everything from helping the druid grove to killing Finkraag…

I WILL beat this game trilogy some day, and I really, really, REALLY don’t want to have to delete my save games…  If it’s ultimately what I have to do to defeat this game once and for all, so be it.  I can play through it all again.  But if there’s anything at all that anyone can suggest I try that doesn’t involve getting rid of my saves, I would be forever in their dept.

My greatest thanks to anyone who had the patience to read all this, more so to those who believe they can help!

Please just don’t use too much technical mumbo-jumbo, what you’ve read here is about the extent to which I understand computers, games and how they work together…

Well, I think I probably understand about as much about computers as you do but, since no-one else has replied, I'll throw in some advice. First, was it the SoA patch you tried to install? If you have ToB installed then you should use that patch, even if your problems are in SoA. It can be found here. But, I believe, it's mostly meant to prevent problems from occuring rather than to fix them once they have, unfortunately.

Honestly, with that number of problems, you might be best off just reinstalling everything and starting again with a clean install and the official patches. Image IPB

Edit: also, you're playing on Windows 7. Do you have the game installed to C:\\Program Files? Vista and Windows 7 have some problems with permissions regarding that folder, which might be why your saves are acting weird. Running the game as administrator might help but it's really better not to have Baldur's Gate installed there.

I am the administrator of the computer, and it is installed there :P The link you gave isn't working at the min, but I'll check back on it later :P Thanks for the advice :) For some strange reason, my unglitched game's been deleted where as the 3 gltiched ones (One I'm playing about 4 hours of game play ago, one of a druid I've only just started and an auto save) are all still there... Odd :/ I'm gonna keep going with the game I have, make another save after loading the glitched version. if it does it again, I'll start voer.

Thanks for the help! :D
