I seem to have missed one heavy pistol damage upgrade on my insanity ng+ playthrough, and though it is a minor thing, it kind of bugs me. Is there a way to make minor changes in the save so this upgrade is open for reserch?

No. You have to restart from either the tali, thane, or jacob mission depending on which upgrade you missed.
