I'm not entirelly sure what you;re saying but:
Leave Grunt, Zaeed (if you have him) and Legion to defned the door. Making sure they're loyal for adding hardness. No one tends to die if you leave those guys there.
Only take loyal members with you into the final battle. Take the squishy ones as well; Mordin, Tali, Jack people like that.
Send a squishy loyal to defend the crew e.g. Mordin.
