It is important to at least have some hope though and not only dispear.
About the game I actually think there will be some MMO-like elements to it. From what I understand from reading the contradicting information avaliable there will actually be possible to walk around in the world and meet all the people on the "server". When going into a quest ("dungeon") you have to be teamed up with a fixed team though.
This all sounds good actually.
Still....the strive to make the game more "fluid" is something I interpret as "they're making a Diablo" unfortunately....
Really a shame Cryptic doesn't seem to have a forum...(right?)

Cryptic sells to Atari, hires Bill Roper, charges people for the same games with different names and on top of that adds a cash shop feature into p2p mmo's and you have to buy the box/game on top of all of that. That's just not good business. I'm not looking forward to having to pay to be a Drow or a RAnger or to use a bow because that is Cryptics idea of NWN. What does Wizards of the Coast think about the cryptic/atari NWN? I'd love to hear from them.

How could another NWN game HURT the franchise?
I don't know if you have noticed but the amount of players in both games has gone drastically down during the last two years or so.
Now is well if the time for something new. It is far to late actually. Blizzard went ahead and made the biggest computer game of all time with something not actually too far away from that what you have on NWN1 PW's.

Are you a guerilla marketer for Cryptic/Atari? A sleeper agent? There is a great article about this on the Escapist site.
Anyways, you shouldn't be disappointed by people's views here. This won't be a part of the NWN series at all except in name. That is not necessarily a bad thing but it won't meet the expectations of the NWN fans. They are trying to appeal to NWN players by using our terminology (i.e. persistant worlds rather than massively multiplayer) but they are not going to deliver what NWN players want. What makes them fans of the NWN series.
The adventure creator will be similar to the one in CoH/CoV. It won't give you the true creative freedom that NWN1/2 does.
It will also limit things for the player. More so than NWN1/2 does.
In short, you get a better product in NWN1/2 with the tradeoff being less people.

We are still left with nothing more than the ability to speculate on what the announcement actually means.

I don't mean to bring up the NWN1 vs NWN2 topic here but you should just know that there are MANY people who where very dissapointed with NWN2, me being one of them....
Dunniteowl, yeah...I read that interview before. If I should also bring some negativity to this new game then it is about Cryptic contanstly drawing parallells to other games...and not talking so much about NWN PW's and how they can make the same but better....

I have yet to play a single MMO, even though when I first saw them come out I thought they were a pretty cool idea. Oh wait! I have played an MMO! Crap, there goes my perfect record.
For the record though, I think it's fair to call me a D&D fan. The only MMO I ever played was Never Winter Nights Online on AOL from Stormfront Studios. And I wouldn't have if I had to pay an extra subscription fee on top of my AOL fees.

I wanted to mention it here because the best ways around that kind of gameplay are intensive, well-written storylines and complex interactions between players, both of which are more efficiently provided by an active community of builders, DM's, and gracious players than by a development team.
So what would Cryptic have to do to make NWO something better than another WoW clone? Even just a prettified NWNO-AOL might be revolutionary at this point.

But still NWN2 was clearly a next step after NWN1 an evolution that I found very successfull.
NWN online isn't an evolution it's a different beast. Will it be good or not ? Impossible to tell yet, but it will compete with D&D online from Turbine, not with NWN1 or 2.

I too was disappointed with NWN2 in many ways, but I still love it and the advantages it has over NWN1 for a builder are awesome. The engine is still fundamentally the same in many ways, too.
An online one *would* be something totally different, though.

I don't think you have to bring it up. It is just a waste of everyone's time and effort to discuss. NWN1/2 are the same animal with some changes. This is really nothing like the same animal. In fact, it is a completely different animal from a different continent that followed an entirely different evolutionary path.

Seems to me that NWN Online is even less likely to appeal to NWN2 fans (esp. fans of the single player campaigns) than it is to NWN fans.
I am an NWN fan too and I don't think it has affected my view of this new Neverwinter game.

I'm not sure why people think NWNMMO is going to have an out of game toolset like NWN2. Cryptic already made an MMO with an in game toolset for creating adventures exactly like what they are describing for the new NWNMMO.
Look at City of Heroes Mission Architect for the future** of NWNMMO.
.
Cryptic and Jack were long gone before this came about. In fact it's been paragon studio's driving "City of" for years now.
To be honest I would feel better if Paragon was handling this. STO and champions did not impress me at all.
I would wish Bio to do it but they are busy with ToR and they don't need any distractions.
Then again I would rather just a NWN3 type game not some mandatory online thing. imho
