For those who haven't finished BG1 or even BG2 then stop reading now.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I have only just noticed it.
Did anyone else find the mission pack party line up a bit ... strange?
Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Viconia and Edwin.
They're the only returning characters from BG1 to BG2, bit of a spoiler on Bioware's behalf.
Did they know who was returning by the time they'd made TotSC then?

Makes the mind boggle.

The mission pack that comes with Tales of the Sword Coast. It starts you off at Ulgoth's Beard. I think it's a save game of someone who developed the game. Going through the areas, the person has gone to the essental locations only, and left other NPCs where they are (don't know about Dynaheir mind you). I think it's so if you played Baldur's Gate and completed it, you could play as this alternative party when TotSC came out.

I'd never thought about it, but it looks as though they did know which characters would be around in BG2.

Of course with all the mods around, you can now have Branwen, Xan, Ajantis etc. in BG2"

Also note the main character is a fighter named Abdel like the guy from the Baldurs gate novel

I did think the name was familiar, well noticed. Anyone read the novels? I heard they were awful. In the mission pack he has blue hair as well, which I always found bizarre as a child.

This definitely has something to do with the Twisted Rune.

You could ask. They probably were already working on SoA (and NWN too) when doing the expansion ("mission pack" is just Canadian for "expansion"; TotSC is the mission pack). Because of all the writing needed, they probably would have already known all the characters that were going into SoA if that's the case.

The Abdel stock character in SoA (the fighter.chr that you can import) at least doesn't have the nonsense colors. The novels are supposedly used toilet paper.

I've read the books. The first one isn't bad, but completely forgettable. I'd have had little motivation to read it if I didn't love the games as much as I do (just started another BG1 game last Sunday :P). It doesn't follow the game completely either, but I don't think that was a priority for the author. As far as the SoA book goes, it was pretty bad. The ending was a complete failure. Basically Irenicus has everything under control and is about to complete his bad guy aspirations when he decides that the best way to get rid of Abdel is to cast Imprisonment (not actually called that, but it's the same effect) on both Abdel and himself. Jaheira starts crying which makes Abdel pop out of the ground (not exaggerating here, that's really what happens), and Irenicus just gets stuck there for eternity... fail.

I can barely remember the ToB book, except that the end sounded much too easy.

O ye mercyful gods, what?!

Seriously?

Awesome. :) (maybe somebody make a mod to save you from Imprisonment if you are romantically involved with somebody - that would make Kangaxx a lot easier!)

It wouldn't surprise me if they knew - the game is full of little hints at upcoming games (both BG2, and NWN, and, I think, IWD - though I don't know when IWD & IWD2 were released in relation to BG1).

You meet quite a bunch of people in BG1 that are talking about troubles in Neverwinter, Waterdeep, etc. It's quite enjoyable if you have also played those games and then replay BG1 to see all the references.

I think it is quite smart of them to put in spoilers like that.

Let's see...

Drizzt says he's going to the Icewind Dale. I don't know if that's a nod to one of the games.

There's a person called Pallonia here who mentions "a city where winter never rears its ugly head" or something like that and what I think could be a hint at BG2.

Lord Foreshadow (go north from Nashkel) talks of Neverwinter, but most especially, if you say "Bah! I have heard of such a city but have my doubts as to whether it even exists!" he says "Not yet, maybe, but soon." and if you say something else, he mentions the nights there were quite popular (the game is called "Neverwinter Nights", after all).

I think there may be one or two others, too. Obviously, there are lots of people mentioning other FR places, but those ones at least really sound like nods to other games.

Something i really took note of was when the fat spider lady in cloakwood area 2 mentions she was cursed by an arch mage called Jon Icarus. Maybe an early name for Irenicus ?

I read one the the journals on IGN the other day (someone posted a link to them on here) and they said development for Baldur's Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights was well under development during Tales of the Sword Coast. So I guess by then they knew exactly how the story would pan out, so slipped in the cheeky Mission Pack.

There are a few items in BG2 that come from MDK, right? I miss it when games nod towards other games.

Dragon age did it every now and again, one of the courtesans would say "Hey there sexy, you wanna take a look at me ditties?" and when going to the end of a map "Gather your party and venture forth", apart from that I canneh think of any references.
