Do they include reading the codex in this estimated time ....?

I would hope so. Why are so many kids only interested in the action part of games these days? There is a rich world that is fleshed out through the codex entries. To me, the history and lore is just as important if not more so than the action. Put another way, if Dragon Age was action only I would have never bought it.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood you based on one half senetence excerpt, but it is true in general nonetheless. The mass gaming audience seems to be less and less interested with story and more concerend about getting leet gear and pumping up their gamer scores.

Don't get me wrong, I like a mindless blow-stuff-up game as much as the next guy. Just not in my RPGs.

p.s. what difficulty did you play on?

Please return the game and stop posting on the forums.  If a 40-55 hour play through that you can do on each of the origin stories (so that makes well over 300 hours time) is not enough then we do not need you here.

So do I, but adding reading your Codex to playtime is pretty lame, I did read some of the things in the Codex just not all of it.  And Kansadoom I would take a screenshot of my gametime but I play it on Xbox so I can't.  I'm not saying it's a bad game just voiceing my opinion on how I feel that it is too short.  After it took me 60+ hours to beat Mass Effect in a single playthrough, I had really high hopes that this game would take me longer but it didn't, and that is the only thing that upsets me.

Please instead of even thinking of posting anymore questions or complaints just return the game & save us the pain of reading your posts about your dissapointment in a game that got 12 9/10 review scores & hundred of thousands of fans.

There's also something else to consider. Some of the choices you make in game can have very large effects on gameplay. Not to give any spoilers, but I know of a couple places where your dialog choice can cut out hours of play, and you would never know it. Perhaps the people finishing quickly are making a lot of bad choices. :)

I'm at my first main story-location and i haven't even finished it yet (Mages Tower) and i'm on 29h playtime already (Hard-difficulty, 360).This is really a game to smell the flowers and i love squeezing out every dialogue i can get.

I'll bet Bioware was assuming no one would hit the escape button at all during dialogues, and would try all dialogue options... Then perhaps you would get more hours out of it :)

I'm currently at a play time of 41 hours, I have 50% of the world explored and I'm at 30% complete. I'm wondering the opposite...Will I be able to finish it this month? And exactly how much more storyline and side quests are there? :)

Still on my first play with 30% complete and around 50 hours playing.

Take the time to get party memberts to high respect levels as they offer side quests.

There is also money quests for various factions in the game etc. Rush to the end and it will be alot less tbh.

I think I have all the treaties now and have a couple side quests to do then i think it's off to talk to the arl at redcliff to start the landmeet after that. No idea how much is after that! 53 hours played and 29% of the story done. I'm guessing either my choices have cut out a lot, i've missed a lot of side quests or there is still a fair amount to go after the landmeet. Or a mix of all! Mmm.

Oh yeah. i'm thoroughly enjoying playing a warrior! Warriors are awesome in this game. I've never imagined enjoying a warrior with sword a shield before! W1N.

I beat the game on hard with all areas explored most quests done except the ones that are specific like the stealing one in Denerim and ANtivan Crows ( Killed the guy) with 61 hours not complaining at all especially with most RPGs now-a-days infact I am roling another character and playing the game completely different then I did previously...

I dont think anyone has said its a bad deal but they have advertised up to 120 hours and at best its half of that I did every side quest i possibly could still beat the game in 65 hours..... and thats including time for smoke breaks

Never believe marketing, especialy EA.  40 hours isn't bad, it's still a huge improvment over ME.

True.  Mass Effect was 15-20 hours for the main story without sidequests (and we know how most of the sidequests turned out...  Blegh.)

I don't judge part of a game's overall value based on playtime hours, really.  It's if things feel short - and in ME's case, they felt incredibly brief.  That was a game that needed a good ten hours or more of extra story but never got it.  A real shame, honestly.

I hope everyone complaining about length (not many folks from what I see) have played ME and understand just how small a main quest can get.

I agree about ME. It was short. I finished in 30-35h and I did pretty much everything. It was great story-wise, but as the above poster said - there was just too little of it. And the sidequests were rarely anything other than going to a different planet, rolling around in your Mako for an hour and killing someone.

I'm glad that Dragon Age put so much time into the Main Quest. I would love more sidequests with deep story to them, but obviously it's better to have the quest you have to do in order to complete the game be the best of them.

I'd love a few more DLC-s to bolster the optional quests area and hopefully a full expansion in a year with a new main quest and a whole bunch of sidequests.

Perspective: Modern Warfare 2 takes about 5-6 hours to beat on normal.

These days you're lucky to get 20 hours out of a RPG or shooter, Mass Effect was about 30 per play through, Dragon Age looks like it will be about 60 per play through. You have nothing to complain about, at all, you have a right to complain of course, it's just that BioWare should dismiss you as an ungrateful parasite and ignore you. :)

My rule of thumb is length = endings x average 100% play-through on normal.

I'm doing a 100% play-through on normal on PS3 right now (having never got stuck anywhere) and it looks like it's going to take 60-65 hours based on %complete/explored.  That's 65 x2 or x4 or x6 or however many substantially different endings there are.  There's at least 2, so that's 130 hours, making it the longest game I've owned that's not a MMO in about a decade.

Mass Effect was about 30 hours for a 100% play-through (collectibles not required) x2 endings (more like alignments really), that's 60 hours and still one of the best values in a long time.

If you really want infinite length and RPG gameplay though, you need to get into MMOs, that's what they're all about as they never end.

I was about to make a post about this but decided to look first. I really enjoyed this game a lot, however I agree that saying this game has over 100 hours of game play is insane. I did every quest I could find and beat the game at 35 hours, and at least 3-5 of those hours where spent away from my Xbox with it still running the game. Do they include reading the codex in this estimated time as well as 2 play throughs with the bonus content? I have the Stone Prisoner content but decided to save it for my second play through thinking I would be on my first one for a long time. I know its hard to find a game with decent play through time but it took me 60+ hours to beat Mass Effect (side quests included), somehow it seems odd that a game made by the same company 2 years ago had double the playtime of this, and had voice acting for the main character on top of that. I will probably still end up getting 100+ hours out of this game, but I am pretty pissed that I beat the game in such a short time.

You must have it on easy. I dont believe that you could power through this game in 30 - 32 hours in any other setting on your first play through.

Considering this is the First single player only game i can justify spending the money I did on since maybe, mass effect, it does good.  There are very few story driven SP games anymore that deliver anything short of a decent gametime (batman was a good game, but hell, it lasted all of 7 or so hours.)

I would imagine the original poster is just going as fast as he can through the main story, not talking to random NPCs, talking to allies, or exploring every corner of every map.

He says 48 hours and he's no the very last quest of the main story arc. As for myself my experience is far different.

I am 50% through the game with 80% of the world explored and I've already clocked 65 hours on my first play through. I expect to get at least double that by playing through again as a rogue or warrior rather than a mage and playing a more insidous character.

I think that 120 hours is a pretty reasonable estimation considering the game has decent replay value.

Maybe if you walk everywhere and not run :)

I'm about 30 hours in, not even out of the Fade, 1/2 way through Red Cliff, 1/3 of the side bounty quests complete. Of course I put over 150 hours on my main from Fallout 3 and Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion each.  I'm a bit of explorer and dialoguer.

Well, I'm taking my sweet time. What's the rush anyway? I'm only ~16 hours in, playing on hard, 9% complete, 11% explored (and I always pause to read the codex). I think this'll be a long one for me.

Heh my first through took 40 hours. 57% complete and 85% explored. Did every sidequest I could find except them MMO-like quests. (mages collective etc) Did do all chanters board though. I did not skip any dialogue, heck I love to listen to the dialogue. I have to admit that I didn't read much in the codex however and before anyone mentions it no I did not play on easy. I'm not complaining though 40 hours and loved every minute of it and the replay value is ridiculously high.

So they've been boasting that the main quest alone should take 60 hours and that if you do everything that it's over 120 hours of gameplay.  I've invested 48 and the only thing left for me to do is the very last portion of the main quest.  I've even done both DLC's, killed all the stupid dragons, etc.  Kind of disappointed honestly.

Well i'm playing on Hard right now and i'm 55hrs into the game and I still have to finish the Dwarf area, Dalish area and return to Denerim and my origin. Not including side quests like half of my companions and normal side quests i'm sure to pop-up

Yea I think i'll finally finish my 1st playthrough in 40 more hours of gameplay.

Not only that I still have to go through the other 5 origins! I will easily have invested 400 hours of gameplay based on the content I have now. I'm sure there will be more DLC so this game is pure gold in my eyes.

I'm increasingly convinced the OP and others who think the game is that short are missing something. A lot of somethings, actually. I've found that randomly talking to my party, even while out on a campaign, yields all kinds of story arcs, codex entries, additional information that--even if I hit Esc every time--increases the depth and scope of the game considerably.

If you're not paying attention, and not trying to find the additional story that's right there in front of you, then you've missed what the game represents. I'm not a fanboi, I'm a gamer. And I assert again that I have never, ever, seen a game of this breadth and scope. Truly amazing.

Like a lot of the more recent posters in this thread, I am just under 30 hours thus far, and have not even finished my side quests in Redcliffe (though I'm through the main story arc there). I have Shale and have completed the Warden's Keep. I honestly cannot imagine that I'll finish this game in <75-100 hours.

One other side note. I've never felt the moral choices I've made in prior games have ever caused me to squirm as much as in DA:O. Some of the choices presented are very high inference, painful, and heart-breaking. In ME, I only had that feeling once (with the queen beast thingy on the 3rd planet in the story arc). Here, I feel it regularly: that gut-wrenching sensation that no matter what I do, I will harm one person or another irrevecably. That's a high complement.
