How *necessary* is a tank?

Here tanks struggle with aggro and barely take less damage than everyone else. So yes I think tanking is too weak in this game.
However, it is still nice and useful to have one person taking most of the beating so the rest can function better.

For Awakening, it's a waste of potential dps.

I think they intended for tanks to work much as they do in MMOs, where the tank takes MUCH less damage than everyone else and can usually keep aggro on all the mobs at the same time.

I am afraid I will have to disagree on that one. The whole time I played World of Warcraft and what little of what one might call Vanguard, tanks used to be specifically for soaking damage, while dealing little damage in return. Surely they could keep aggro with special attacks, but aggro could also have easily been triggered by higher damage counts.
I, as a matter of fact, also do not believe that it is necessary to contain what typical RPGs call "tanks", nor do I believe that they have effective aggro skills in DA, but I know they can deal massive amounts of damage given the right equipment, and perhaps specializations.

All I'm saying is in MMOs they typically DO have good aggro skills and they can soak up damage very well. In DAO there are certainly working aggro skills, but they pale in comparison. It's also debatable whether DAO tanks are actually good at soaking up damage. It seems to me that armor isn't all that good, but dex (which DPS classes can have) is much better.

So in the traditional sense a full fledge tank is definitely not required, and I agree with everyone who said DPS > taking damage in this game. (Hint: it's also a lot more fun I find as well!)
My battles usually go like so:
Morrigan puts a bunck of guys to sleep, Walking Nightmares a smaller group, DPS focus fire and chew through as many bad guys as they can until sleep wears off and Alistair taunts whatever group of baddies that head towards Morrigan that are left over. My main could do the taunting as well if required.
I've got to get better at using my Mage for things other then CC though, my Fireball gets dusty. Typically I nuke the archers in the back, but the associated volley of arrows that head Morrigan's way get her killed pretty kick. The Archers aren't clustered well enough for Alistair to "pick em all up" and its actually easier for me to bull charge them with my main and mop up.

If you build your DW dex rogue to have high enough dex, your rogue can even tank (because each point of dex adds 1 to defense). That said, it's undesirable because you won't be able to flank and backstab while tanking.
I just cleared Awakening with Sigrun DW (Duelist, Bard, Legionnaire Scout) wearing full Sentinal's Armor and holding Daisycutter and Vigilance as my tank. I gave her 3 or 4 Menacing Runes and she held aggro well enough. She also had to rarely pop her Legionnaire damage mitigation abilities, even on boss fights.
Having Nathaniel as a Cun Rogue, and both my PC and Anders as Blood Magic, Battle Mage, Keepers also meant that I did enough single target DPS, AOE DPS and CC that things didn't live long enough to do too much damage anyways.

You can have a lot of fun with Force Field. AoE like mad - for example Fireball, Virulent Walking Bomb, Blood Wound. Then immediately Force Field your mage. Works every time.
Otherwise the goal of your mage is to simply do enough damage and use enough CC that the enemy cannot retaliate. This is certainly possible, but it helps to have a focused build and lots of Magic.

Tanks are...helpful but completely unnecessary.
I'll chime in with a "I second this."

There has been in game only one battle where I have seen use of tank and even that can be solved other ways. It was that situation where you get rested by very strong female guard. Hardest battle I have been when tryed it, because she hit hard and has huge amount of health or protection. Sure, she can be killed with tank and healer easyly. But without tank, hehe.. it's gonna be interesting battle. ;-)
