Problem:

During game play and cutscenes the monitor goes black and the OS becomes unresponsive.  A reboot is required to recover.  I do have an ATI Sapphire 3870 card, and I'm tried both Catalyst driver 9.10 and 9.7  Neither driver has resolved the issue.

PC specs:

CPU:  Intel Quad Core  Q6660 @ 2.4Ghz
RAM:  4 Gig
OS:  Windows Vista Ultimate
Graphics Card:  ATI Diamond Sapphire 3870 (512 MB)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What otehr games work/dont work?
Also how long after you start the game does this happen?

Power Supply? 650.

Games I'm currently playing just fine:

GTA IV, Call of Duty 4, Age of Conan (quit recently)

The crashes have occurred anywher from less than a minute after loading a saved game to a couple of hours of hours of game play. The last crash occurred about a minute in, and I just gave up.

I was looking more for the brand of quality supply as the amount of watts means not much. But if those games play ok i think its not a PSU issue.

Have you tried turning down settings? I have to play on high/medium texture/0xAA, anything higher and it will crash.

My last crash occurred with everything to the lowest possible value or off altogether. :(

I can only suggest try using an even older driver version(make sure you completely remove new version before installing old) :/. Other than that i am personally out of ideas.

Thank you for trying!  Is there anyway I can post a ticket about this or is community support the only option for this game?

I tried going to help.dragonage.com, but I don't see any option to ask a question, only ways to view an empty question queue.  :P

Im not sure, ive seen people complain on here tho that EA is not supprting them after days tho.. but i think they would only work with publisher/DLC related issues.

Screen going black could indicate that the video driver has stopped responding. Usually it's supposed to recover.. If memory services somewhere in catalyst there's an automatic error recovery. Could try turning it on or off and see if, at the very least, you could get information about the crash.

Yeah i sometimes get the drivers has stopped responding thing. Vista is supposed to do the recovery without help from catalyst control centre, i can't remember what vista update it was tho would've been a year or more ago and it was one of the recommended ones as well (not that windows recommendation means much).

how long do you give it before making it reboot? 30sec is most i need

In any case I am using latest catalyst drivers without CCC (damn program causes the crashes more than anything else, and even got a couple extra FPS without it).

If its not that issue then i have no idea

if this is the black screen with sound loop crash id check this out.

the option i chose was to force my video card to always perform at a 3d level though you can also use rivatuner to underclock it slightly so it never decides to idle in the first place.
