Spirit healer has its uses.... group heal is nice when you get fireballed or rock hurled and lifeward is useful to put on someone who gets put in a crushing prison. But back to the OP's question I'd base how you build Morrigan on how you built your own mage. If you invest in spells that deal direct damage then having Morrigan grab the sleep line and the hex line as well as cone of cold lets her debilitate enemies while you burn/freeze/electrocute them to death. I found a tactic I liked was to have her use affliction hex on the enemy with the greatest health; that way your aoe spells do more damage because of the hex and the hex won't wear off due to the strongest enemy carrying it. The sleep/horror combo is great also and sleeping enemies can't resist waking nightmare. Lastly, others said they don't like blood control but I do; 2 mages with the spell can take control of 2 powerful enemies that fight for you and the enemies continuously lose health while doing it... it just seems like a cunning, insidious tactic that Morrigan would put into play.

egervari, indeed those spells make the game quite easy, particularly with 2+ mages spamming them. I find mages completely overpowered for the majority of the game. It's just on the big bosses like dragons for example where I find it goes much easier with some decent physical DPS.
Just to make it clear though I agree completely on Regeneration's awesomeness. My current tactics for my mages is to cast Regeneration if health < 75% and Heal if it's much lower. I rarely have to heal manually. I will admit that you can do fine without Group Heal, but it saved me quite a few times.
The other Spirit Healer spells are kind of.. meh. Particularly the aura doesn't do nearly as much healing as it should.
Ultimately it also depends on how much you like the other mage specializations. I always found Arcane Warrior to be the epitome of cheese, so I never liked it much myself. Shapeshifting has apparently been buffed, so I should look into that more.

Group Heal isn't always the best heal, but it's a damn good heal to have when you need it.
