Looks like you can edit your posts anytime, even after someone posted after you. Is this desirable?

Yeah, I was wondering abut this too. It is nice to be able to go and correct typos in old posts, but there is a risk of a bit of abuse of this feature. A 30 minute limit (or something like that) might be preferable

Consider this example:

1) A poster posts something controversial, bordering on offensive.

2) A number of people comment on the post in the expected manner.

3) The original poster edits his post, making all the later posters look like they are wildly overreacting.

Personally, I hate not being able to go back and edit an older post and would prefer not to have a time limit. If someone posts some incorrect information, and later want to go back and fix it, someone else who comes along later could easily miss a correction made several posts later.

Sure, there is a small chance for abuse, but it's hardly worth mentioning, and an automated time stamp of the last edit on the post takes care of that. It's worked fine on the Blizzard forums and they have thousands of trolls.

Has been mentioned before. I don't think it's an issue. Other than missing evil Chris' edits of people's posts to replace swear words etc with silly alternatives.

It might be desirable for the sanity of the moderators to put a long limit on, such as the 4 week one that currently exists for the bioboards on being unable to post on inactive threads.

As a long time moderator you definetly want some kind of time limit. Having to reverse engineer a dispute of this nature is a royal pain in the rump. Reasonable editing time? Yes, Unlimited editing time? Hassle in the making.

Just delete the contents of the posts? Usually silly editing of that nature is done when 2 trolls co-incide on the same thread. Neither troll is worth reading and any sensible people who tried to intervene probably don't care if their posts get lost as a result.

Speaking of deleting posts, is there any way for a user to delete their own posts on a forum? Most forums I know have this option, but I haven't seen it here.

In your profile you can delete your recent activity - but not sure if this only removes it from the news feed or if it deletes the actual post.

I tried that already ;) It only deletes the list entry, not the actual post. I would have expected a "delete" button next to the "edit" button in the toolbar of my own posts.

There's a delete button for admins/moderators - bad posts can be deleted, just not by the poster.

I wasn't really thinking about "bad" posts, but rather about mistakes - for example, this morning I replied to a post and belatedly realised that I had misunderstood the original poster and my reply was obsolete. Rather than editing and leaving a meaningless post in the thread, I would have liked to delete it entirely.

It might be reasonable to allow people to delete their own posts, provided there are later replies in the thread.

I was about to file a bug report for not finding a "Delete" button but fortunately a search turned up this thread. I think either the lack of this function needs to be made clearer, or the function should be added. That or the forum moderators are going to need an extra-big bottle of Patience...
