I believe that it's safe to say at least the Love interest will return. If you romanced with no one in ME1 and only romanced a character in ME2 then your pretty much screwed. I'd be in this category.

I'm all for getting the ENTIRE squad back.  This would also include the ME1 squad.  Mainly because I'd like all Mass Effect fans happy and secondly, the more the merrier.

The only squad member I don't think will return is Wrex.  I say this because he's going to be busy down in Tuchanka. I do believe he'll be a squad member for some special missions.

When I finished my first playthrough of ME2, I thought the exact same thing OP. I'm not too worried about it now, but it's still something I think about.

In order to import, we have to have two characters survive.

More people need to remember this. You don't even need the Normandy crew - Joker and EDI can fly the damn thing solo, fire weapons etc., and they are both guaranteed to make it. So no matter which two people survive you can at least take on the Reapers (though you might not win) and you will at least have the choice of Virmire Survivor + Liara + 2 Squaddies to mix things up squad-wise.

These will return as squadmates: Garrus (not anything to go back to), Tali (she might leave, but she is loved by so many fans that she will return), Miranda and Jacob (where are they supposed to go?), Legion (he spent 2 years tracking Shepard down, he won't leave now).

These will not return as squadmates: Grunt (returns to Tuchanka), Mordin (old age), Thane (his sickness), Jack (carries on with her life), Samara (carries on justicaring), Morinth (carries on killing people).

Zaeed and Kasumi will make cameos if you got their DLC.

These are my theories, do they make sense?

I doubt Tali will leave - if you get her exiled she has nowhere to go, and even if you don't she has a very good reason not to return (i.e. they will try to make her an Admiral if she sticks around the fleet, and she doesn't want that yet.) Plus, from her point of view - if she doesn't save the galaxy then her home will be destroyed.

Grunt could return to Tuchanka but he's too young to do anything meaningful there. He is still training under a battlemaster - you. He is a grunt, both in name and station. It's very likely he will take over the Urdnot from Wrex/Wreave, but is a long ways off from that. He also has no reason to serve under any battlemaster except Shepard - Wrex/Wreave are too busy to train him, Uvenk is dead and Shepard has no other equal on Tuchanka. So I don't see him having any reason not to stay with Shepard.

Mordin is actually not that old - see here.

Thane is the one I am most worried about, and if they try to stick us with LOLyat then I'm just going to play ME2 and not bother making him loyal in the first place.

Jack has no life to carry on with. She was an itinerant pirate/general nuisance before being incarcerated, and didn't get up to a whole lot after that until you came along.

Samara/Morinth may leave. (In Samara's case, she may even attack Renegade Shep.) Zaeed and Kasumi may also leave.

1 I think he will stay on as Shep is his Battlemaster.

2 He has another ten years or so left.

3 There is a cure on the way if they want to handwave it away.

4 What else does she have? Especially if you romance her, you make a massive impact on her life.

5 Except that she says she will return whenever Paragon Shepard calls.

6 Only joined up because she wanted to stalk Shepard.

Honestly though, all of the Loyalty missions were a long and convoluted way to make Shepard worth more to these characters then their own life, so i dont see why they would just up and leave, and i seriously seriously doubt that two of the new love interests will not be returning.

Look, there is no way that Bioware will make all the previous squadmates return. Some will go away, and the ones I said are most likely (atleast by my logic that is :P)

Why not?

And even assuming you're right and not everyone can come back, of the ones you listed, only Thane, Samara and the DLC duo have a serious chance of not sticking around.

Personally, I think Samara will have the biggest chance to not make it back, because she shares design space with Liara.

There's a lot that hasn't been addressed with Grunt that goes back to Okeer's dealings with the Collectors.

I agree completely. Mass Effect 2 had no plot, but still worked as a character driven story. I'd compare it to the great Sci-Fi Hyperion Cantos, which introduced the characters over the whole of the first book, which had lot's of small stories, a bit like the loyalty missions, which wouldn't have worked had the sequel not given this purpose. It's the same with Mass Effect. If the characters from the Mass Effect 2 don't carry over, then it was a waste of time. Heck, I'll even send smudboy a letter of apology for defending the game. But if they do return, like I believe they will, then Mass Effect 2 not only has purpose, but will be a classic game and be remembered for years to come.

Probably it's just me, but both these posts doesn't make any sense at all.

Mass Effect 2 was about 2 things, building a team and taking out the Collectors.

There were three missions where you fought Collectors, and there are about 20 character missions.

There is no denying that Mass Effect 2 was about building a squad, if this swuad is not utilised in Mass Effect 3 then ME 2 was all about stalling untill the end of the trilogy because they couldnt find a plot for the middle.

I have to agree. No new characters. (Or at least, very few, and then only to help out the schmucks that got their auperteam killed during the SM.)

I said it MANY times before, Bioware needs to find the Quads to say

"ok guys, You killed everyone in ME2 and ME1? you played ****** poor or you JUST started the trilogy in chapter 3? then you will deal with the consequences of your actions and have a LOT less content to deal with"

and bring back to ME3 everyone who survived as a major role

The statement being taken out of context doesn't make it untrue on its own.

I agree. Hopefully the story will be able to accommodate a 4-person Normandy crew. (5 if you count EDI.)

I'm afraid Bioware is going to take the easy route with ME3.

You're going to rally all the races to fight the reapers, and every race you visit will send along an brandnew squadmate.

It is still misrepresenting something i have said.

I hate it when people put words in my mouth, deliberately omitting words to change the meaning of what i have said is just as bad as adding words to change the meaning of what i said.
