I just ran the 1.01 patch and it seems to have worked, the game starts too which is nice since I've heard some horror stories. However, I just want to make extra sure it actually updated the game since the proccess seemed very quick indeed. Is there anywhere that displays your version number? I am afraid to install it again for fear of breaking the game if it isn't necesarry.

sure.. Load the DA Launcher, click Configure, then Click the Game section, underneath Online and above Repair. Version listing there...
