DA:O had it.
DA2 will have it.
BIoware knows many people like the option.
It will not take that much away from the game by including it.
this is kind of my attitude on it, but who doesn't like debating in the forum?

Sky: I used to have a wife and a daughter, and usually I'm not into dudes, but I'm totally gay for you all of a sudden. Thanks for hitting on me so much, use that tactic on straight guys in real life and see what happens.
Protip: If you're going to comment on a game's content, it helps if you actually know what you're talking about. Sky's romance was nothing like that.
Sky asks you - very tentatively, and very uncertainly - why it is you have refused the advances of what must be the two hottest women in the empire, one of which is your childhood friend and the other is filthy rich royalty. He will not approach you until you have shot down both Dawn Star and Silk Fox. There was no "thank you for hitting on me" because making your interest known to Sky is not an option until he asks you this question.
Secondly, Sky is not gay, he is bi. There is a difference. (Shocking, I know.) Like any good thief, he is observant, and has been watching you (remember how he noticed you shoot down the aforementioned hottest women in the empire?) Based on what he has seen, he thinks he has a shot with you. He is not "a straight guy who suddenly went gay for you."
M/M Sky was one of the most well-done romances I have seen in any RPG, straight or gay, period. He is not promiscuous and pushy (Zevran), does not take every single word out of your character's mouth as a come-on (Jacob), does not fall madly in love with you simply because you are curious (Jack), etc. Whether you liked it or not, at least describe it properly so that those who didn't get a chance to experience it aren't put off by a half-assed misconception. Kthx.

A quick and crude analyisis:
Baldur's Gate 1&2 - Didn't have it
Kotor 1 - Didn't have it, not really and only for females. And in additional to having less written is an alien.
Jade Empire - Had it for men and women. No gay only characters though.
Mass Effect 1 - Didn't have it according to Casey Hudson, can't really argue the Word of God. And even if it did count would be female only and pale incomparison to the fact it is a cross species romance.
ME2 - Didn't have it not really. Kelly is not a full romance compared to the others though she is at least human. Still female only.
DAO - Male and female romances, though no gay only characters. Zevran arguable as he is an elf and if it's an elf it's not gay
Bioware is still leaps and bounds ahead of most major game makers and I am thankful for everything they include but let's not kid ourselves here DAO was the first one where it was included the didn't mess it up in some way by either making the romance less than the others or not including a gay male romance. Thats a straight 1 out of 7 or 15% of the time not good odds overall.
Now with the BG and Star Wars you could argue that the license oversight people wouldn't allow it I'll give you that...still the end result is the same. Generally speaking we have a two steps ahead one step backwards approch happening so I'm fairly confident that DA2 will satisfy me but Bioware doesn't get the inclusion gratitude by default. In short I'll believe it when I see it, even If already believe we will see it. I'll always be happy with the Jade Empire and DAO romances and look forward to more in that same vein. The day when we actually see a character who just happens to be gay only as some happen to be hetero only is the day I'll stop posting on this subject.

Just poking my head in here a few hours late to say that it really was. I romanced her with my f!Cousland, and it quite literally broke my heart having to get Loghain to do it. Poor Maere.yukidama wrote...
I think there was more of an emotional peak with Alistair and Morrigan because they were more intimately tied in with the main plot, not because of their sexual preference. I didn't romance Morrigan as a female but I'm very sure asking Alistair or Loghain to do the Dark Ritual with her (or sacrifice myself or Alistair because I couldn't bear to let them) would have been even more heartrending as her female lover if that were the case.

When they told us about Hawke they said that he/she will be much more customizable then Shepard, but we can already see on these forums how people are latching onto the character as the face of Hawke after just a short vid, they will moreso after the real advertising begins.
I fear we will begin seeing idiotic topics like whats on the ME forum about how something should be canon while other things should not, and how Shepard cant be this or that because the character is predefined and not actually ours.

All characters you have ever played have been predetermined.slimgrin wrote...
If they use the 'Shepard is a predetermined character' logic, DA2 won't have it.
THe only characters that are not predetermined are those you create yourself using the toolset with a custom campaign.

You will never see a gay only character sorry, bioware said it's a waste of resources.

That's why BW doesn't do gay romances. BW only implements straight and bi romances. It's takes a lot less effort to write/code/voice an additional ~5% of content on top of a "straight" romance to make it a plausible bi one than it takes to make a dedicated gay romance.Coyote Hunter wrote...
Say 200 hundred man hours of work go into the heterosexual romance, and 200 hundred man hours of work go into the homosexual romance. If 5% of gamers play the game with the intention of pursuing the homosexual romance, and 50% of gamers play the game with the intention of pursuing the heterosexual romance, is the allocation of the work by artists, modelers, writers, the voice cast, the camera team, etc. as justified for the homosexual romance as the heterosexual romance?
Would you spend 20 million dollars financing two films with two different audiences if you knew that one would attract 5% of a group, while the other attracted 50% of that same group? Would you do it if you knew that 5% would probably go see the other film the 50% intend to see anyway?
My prediction is that we won't see gay characters in DA2 (that you can romance) at all -but might very well get one or two bi options again. At least F/F romances are probably as popular as straight romances and I really can't imangine someone honestly and truly not buying the game because there was an M/M option.

bioware have never made a game with same-sex romance that had a sequel, so the games without homomance as examples are kind of invalid...
and i think having a bi-romancable is just practical... and really better than asking for an exclusively homosexual one...

I would consider FemShep and Liara to be same-sex, and ME2 was made. Discount Lesbians, to be sure, but still same-sex. You can have a fling with Kelly and try to have a relationship with Samara (or just have death sex with Morinth), but there is no full relationship.
I've never seen a BioWare dev explain why, if Shep is so predetermined, why is only male Shep straight, and not FemShep? Lesbians are less homosexual? Why is being predetermined automatically negate the idea that a man like Shepard could also be gay or bisexual? No bisexual leaders in space?

I like the "it's too expensive" excuse better.

Never is an awful long time, never say neverWhich isn't to say I'm personally asking for a gay character I could personally care less whether my fem chars romances are bi vs gay so long as they can be romanced by her! And bring on the threesomes! It's not like I don't play male characters after all.
Yeah never is a very long time. Personally though instead of exclusively gay characters I would like to see all romanceable characters be available for same-sex and hetero relationships. Not because I'm opposed to gay-only LIs, I just think you get more mileage out of it in that case and more options. I'd rather have inclusivity than exclusivity.
