Hi - I'm not sure if this is a known issue or not, but my game keeps on hanging in a most irrating fashion.  This a brand new pc with latest drivers etc and windows 7.  It says it is the 5570 drivers - I get a windows error saying they crashed and recovered.

Is there a fix?  Google has turned up nothing and neither has the search function on here so far.

Having such juddery performance on a new pc is a definite let-down - I think my mother is a little hurt that I'm unable to play the new game she bought me on our new pc.  I'd really value any help on this.:)

What version of the Catalyst drivers are you using? I suggest you install 10.7 if you are not already using this version.

One important thing to do if you are not using ATI HDMI output: disable ATI High Definition Audio Device in Windows Devices Manager. And update your audio drivers with the latest available from the manufacturer web site.

In CCC, disable Adaptive Anti-aliasing, set Catalyst AI to Standard and Mipmap Detail Level to Quality. Set all other settings to Application-controlled (Use application settings).

Sorry, yes - its the latest set of catalyst drivers. It must be 10.7 - I'm new to windows 7 and can find*nothing* on it - everything is in different places!

I am trying all your other suggestions - thank for the help - I am hoping to be returning with good news!

You can find which version of Catalyst drivers you are using in CCC, under Information Center > Graphics Software.

So - still no joy. I'm am still getting this 'display drivers stopped responding' error. Particularly in 'camp' and during the cutscenes that I get to speak in.

I have no idea where to go with this next. This is really saddening - I am enjoying the game so much when it works.

Sorry, no idea except to update DirectX and install the critical updates/hotfixes available on Windows Update web site.

The dwarfen city is so difficult to play in that I'm going to have to give up. Every two seconds it hangs while the display driver collapses and gets recovered - and sometimes there is no recovery.

I have the same problem, but with a 3450. One day I decided to try and play, and it won't let me. worked fine up till about march, then I logged back in a few months later and couldn't play - kept gettign message "amdkmdap stoppped responding". Now I don't get that message at all, and DA:O just hangs. Been that way for months now, and have found no solution :/

Disable VPU Recovery option in CCC. I have noticed that it causes more problems than it solves.

Since a 3450 SHOULD BE a bad choice, problems with it SHOULD BE expected.  You probably started with it set correctly to Low Textures, Low resolution, Low Image Quality, and then made the bad decision to raise some of the settings.

The HD 5570 isn't a very sub-minimum card in the way that your card is, although it certainly is no High End part, either.  .. Which leads me to ask what screen resolution and what Image Quality settings are being attempted with it by the OP on this thread?

It should be able to do Medium Resolution with Medium/Low Image Quality, or Low Resolution with Medium/High Image Quality settings.

Pfft.  I ran it fine for 60 hours of gameplay (on medium/recommended), then all of a sudden it stops working.

puh-lease.

Anyway I reinstalled CCC/drivers, back to 8.12 when it was definitely working, and I still get the same error (that never occurred once in my three playthroughs previously).

The game was designed to run correctly on a proper Gaming-capable graphics card.  You don't have such a device.  Really simple fact.  It was never intended for anything more difficult than Charts, Graphs, Presentations, and Spreadsheets.

Very basic discussion of video cards, video chips, and even of laptops' limits:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/519461

Until the OP's own problem is resolved, you may not Hijack his thread, so back off.

Did you notice the part where myself and the OP have the exact same problem?

Clearly not.

It seems to make no difference what I try to do with it on that front - I can seemingly whack it up to the highest settings without any changes in the frequency of these display drivers collapses.  Currently I have it on medium for both textures and graphics.  I turned anti-aliasing off altogether.

Resolution is 1280x1024, same setting as my monitor.

Vertical sync enabled - though this doesn't make a difference; it hangs if it is off or on.  Same thing wioth frame buffer effects - I have them off right now but with no noticeable difference.

Can't seem to see VPU Recovery option in CCC anywhere - I just tried forcing everything down in the CCC but also still having no success.

amdkmdag error is not uncommon, and is not limited amongst a few cards (just google amdkmdag)
Example:

suggestion in that thread is RMA :/

Guess amd are gonna have a nice negative turnover for christmas

Looks good to me. Is Packard Bell still in business? Maybe in Europe?

Two different Asian PC makers chose to continue the Packard Bell label in the UK as a budget-level brand. The first such was a Japanese firm, perhaps Sony (no, I'm seeing a name with an "N" as the first letter, not the third -- NEC?) More recently, it's belonged to Acer, a large Taiwanese company. The PB quality reputation in the US had been very bad, unlike the perception of the Brits for the brand.

I have exactly the same issue, except my graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4890... apparently 9.7 prevents this issue of DAO freezing
