Ray Muzyka calling DA2 an action RPG

Now, about this action RPG business. Wasn't DA:O basically an action RPG? The only difference I saw was that you could pause and command people. Which I'm pretty sure you can still do, at least on the PC. Now if we were to get confirmation on some kind of button mashing mechanics, THEN I'd be worried.

Yes, that would be the point. At least a couple of the devs have spent numerous posts around here trying to reasure PC players that they weren't going to get an actioned out version of the game. In essesne trying to steer us away from the connotations of the label "action RPG" and here Ray just specifically slapped on the label "action RPG" along with all of its oh so taboo connotations.Bryy_Miller wrote...
Why? None of them even said it wasn't action.the_one_54321 wrote...
He just put a number of the devs foots in their mouths. I'm sure they're all just pleased as punch with him.
LOL, so true, so true!
Hell hed call it rich and flavorfull to boot!
The One, great points but as you see, all hypocricy will be spun and twisted away with nonsense!
As for Action part, why would anyone argue that, thats what most folks have expected, a step away from RPG and into Action. Ray just solidifies that concern.
Whats there to argue about!
PS: Wow, this first page of thread is so troll filled, Bioware must be so proud! Special Ed classes love their products now.
......
I would like to ask you something. Did you just insinuate Special Ed classes as a bad thing? Really? And you just insinuated that Special Ed classes utilize BioWare 's games in such a..
Wow. You know, I've heard some bad things about Special Ed classes. I've heard things left and right. But that sentence alone makes everything you ever say, or will say, complete and utter bullcrap. Insulting those who are actually POSITIVe about DA2 is one thing, but insulting those in special ed classes and those who are positive in the same sentence?
My, my, I've yet to see someone as sillily trolling as you, though many at 4chan come close.
not that your whinny post (Seriously, I hear ringing in my ears from your whine) deserves a answer but the first page has nothing to do with liking DA2 and everything to do with the webs worst trolls bashing people that havent even said anything!
When you get outta special ed, maybe you will be able to tell the difference!

So, you're basically insinuating that special ed classes are bad, are for the retarded, and that once one gets out of them one becomes better?
Childish, immature, and altogether filled with hate, I see. Then you are much a fool as I thought you were. No need to bother with you anymore.

Um, no. There was nothing "Action" about DA:O in the slightest. Maybe the only thing that could be compared was the "Finishing Moves" against ogres and dragons. Being bloody and having a lot of combat is not what makes an "Action" mechanic in a game.Heavenblade wrote...

I'm not trying to pick fights with any devs so I'm not naming names. I can't think of any instance of devs "making fun of posters," care to back that up? The most I've heard from a dev on the matter of "Dragon Effect" was Mike Laidlaw saying, "It's an understandable concern, but..."
Those statements are still valid in the context that they were said in. People were doomsaying with no substantive arguments. Just because your substanceless argument was later given substance (even if we are to grant that this news constitutes "substance" for your argument), that doesn't mean anyone was in any way wrong for pointing out the lack of substance in your argument at the time.

First of all, this isn't about my argument. The only times I've gotten really riled up was when a french article claimed there would be no tactical free camera and when some people who played demos said all movement was WASD only and all auto-attack features were gone. Missinformation and pointed out as such at the time.filaminstrel wrote...

This however, is a matter of, as you specifically pointed out, devs saying "your argument has no substance" and then their boss saying "I am givng that argument substance." That's practically the definition of the phrase "foot in mouth."

Action RPGs are all fine and dandy, but as has been said, thats not what some want out of DA. I want a deep, tactical RPG. Now if BioWare's definition of an action RPG overlaps with my definition of a tactical cRPG then fantastic.
This all just reminds me of how they changed ME2's combat such that their directive was to speed it up and make the whole pausing thing unnecessary. That seems what they're doing in DA2- making sure that the game can be played without pausing- which is fine, but its my impression that in doing so, they're neglecting the pause and play style and if you care for the pause and play style, the game is going to be weaker and less in depth. Hopefully I'm wrong...

I saw those as BioWare throwing a bone or offering a sop to the "kewl-hurr-hurr-ADHD" element of the console gamers who appear to need such over-the-top elements. Call it slipping the camel's nose under the fringe of the tent in preparation for making DA2 an Action-RPG.

Still I shall wait till actual gameplay is released.

Pardon me for not being on the video game abbreviation up and up, but what does the C stand for in CRPG?
The "C" stands for computer, as opposed to a traditional tabletop P'n'P (Pen and Paper) roleplaying game. It's often written as cRPG to emphasize the desire for a game that's heavy on roleplaying as opposed to an action-oriented, roleplaying-lite game.

Not always true. Dungeon Siege was widely viewed as an action-RPG when it came out, not because it required direct player input to fight but because the gameplay was predominantly combat. All you did was fight your way through wave upon wave of enemies until you reached the big bad at the end.Reaverwind wrote...
Furthermore, you don't turn on auto-attack in an action-RPG and sit back to watch your controlled character play whack-a-mole. Every hit requires input from the player.
The twitch-requirement is far from universal.

I don't really see it that way, considering that "foot in mouth" implies that they said something that was obviously wrong, whereas in the statements you pointed out, they didn't specifically say it wasn't an action RPG, they were just commenting on people's quickness to jump to conclusions without any information. There's nothing to recant about that.
