@Soteria - yep, Haste is not nearly as good as I use to think. I think I may pass on that whole line.

@DWSmiley - Thanks for the link. I have read soo many threads on Shapeshifting I forgot about that one.

To be honest, I am not really sure I am going to *need* a melee option. At least for anything other then a boss. I have Morrigan with a single Glyph of Paralysis and I can get a Paralysis Explosion + Inferno out extremely fast. When I get Wynne I will respec her so she has the Glyph line through Replusion which will let me get back to back Paralysis Explosions. Toss in Blood Wound, Mass Paralysis and CoC and I am not sure anything will be able to move.

Still, bosses are my only worry. Especially a Reverant in the low levels. That is why I am thinking about Bombs. Not much is going to survive an Affliction Hex+Vulernability Hex + Fireball + 3-4 Bombs. All I have to do is hold him in place for 4-5 seconds to unleash that. Hmm, or I wonder if the DoT from Fireball stacks? Mages do rock.

Eh, with three mages I probably *would* take haste for the run speed, with so many spells to spare. It would be especially handy in the deep roads. With that much firepower, you'll be doing a lot more running between fights than actual fighting, I'd guess.

Correct, but Mass Paralysis? Whatever works, I guess.

Revenants?
* Lockdown w/ CoC, GoP, or PE
* Apply VH / AH (MH helps as well, obviously)
* Pile on Spirit DoTs - WB, VWB, CP, CoM
* Later on, Entropic Death will speed the process
* Use grenades if available
* Repeat until dead

Not too difficult for a solo caster....with three mages it'll be cake

^^ Hey I am trying to make this sound fun and challenging! Not it is a pushover.

On Mass Paralysis I was planning on maybe having two characters run Miasma. For some nasty slow effects on any dumb melee toon that manages to escape the other CC. Might as well pick up Mass Paralysis.

Doing some experimentation and I realized the Spell Regeneration is bugged. According to the description it is supposed to give (100+SpellPower) regen over 10 seconds or over 5 ticks. For those that don't know both Stamina and Health Regen every 2 seconds or tick. So according to the formula with a 60 spell power you should have a per tick regen of 160 over 10 seconds or 32 points per tick. That part works fine, but there is a hard cap of 20 points per tick on health regen. That means the most regeneration will ever restore is 100 points of health. Or the base amount.

I wasn't expecting this to be linked to normal regeneration and don't see why it should at all.

If this is true... Well, sigh.

Another spell that they neglected to scale with spellpower...That would be a good addition to Qwinn's fixpack (he fixed the same problem with chain lightning) but Qwinn seems scarce thses days, alas.

The regeneration spell modifies the both normal health regen and combat health regen. However, combat Health Regen is capped at 20 in the properties 2da. The spell scales correctly, it just runs into a hard cap of 20 points per tick. It gets worse though, if you have anything that boosts combat health regen - like Lifegiver, Cailens Armor or Berserker you get less and less out of regeneration spell. Because the 20 point cap applies to the total health regen - regardless if individual sources are under 20.

A fix would be to modify the properties.2da.

Also, looks like I was wrong about the max debuff from Hexes - it is indeed 100%, not 75% like I thought.  Ah well we can not all know everything.

I don't understand why it can't just apply a healing tick every 2 seconds instead. Implementing it through the existing health regen system seems like a bit of a hack to me.

^^ Ehh, feel your pain the bugs in this game! I am tempted to make and release a bug fix pack, but then you get into that whole PC/non-pc on the boards. You start talking strategy only to realize it does not apply to non-mod pc user.

Not like Bethesda games where there is a huge mod community. DA is pretty slllooowww when it comes to mods. Even compared to NWN.

No one in their right mind would mod a game that is still in [effect] beta.

Just cleared out Lothering.  The party was Arial (PC) and Morrigan.

Current Spell List:

Arial: Arcane Bolt, Arcane Shield, Fire through Inferno, Glyph through Replusion and Walking Bomb
Morrigan: Arcane Bolt, Arcane Shield, Sleep throught Sleep and Cold through CoC, Spider Form (Yay Respec Mod)

Combat was vastly different from my last playthrough!  Strange not to have a melee toon.

Lothering is a Nuker Mages dream come true.  Extremely easy to land a Paralysis Explosion right at the start.  Immediately follow with Inferno!  However, invariably one or two monsters would be outside the radius of the PE and start charging the two mages.  That is when we would resort to Sleep + Horror from Morrigan.  Followed up by a Fireball.  CoC and Flame Blast cleans up anything left.

Some notes on the Spells:

Sleep:  Orginially I did not like Sleep a whole lot, but it can be extremely effective.  The key is to start moving every character the instant you start casting Sleep.  That way you will not wake up two or three targets right away.  It is a fast casting spell and the Combo with Horror will usually kill one white character or drop a Yellow health in half.  You can use Sleep to set up a PE in those encounters where you start right next to the monsters - like during a cutscene.  Cast Sleep, move everyone away and then PE.

Fireball: Just a workhorse for a Nuker Mage.  Good Damage and Fast Cooldown.  Plus some CC with the knockdown.  The DoT effect does not appear to stack with multiple Fireballs, but it does stack with Flame Blast.

Fire + Cold Spells: You have to be aware of a few things when trying to use Fire and Cold Spells together.  First, Cone of Cold or Blizzard will cancel any damage over time effects from Fireball and Flame Blast.  Winters Grasp does not seem to effect the flame DoT.  However, Flame Spells will not impact Cold spells at all.  It may remove the "icy look", but critters can still be shattered or remain frozen in place.  So the key is to hit them with CoC and then Flame Blast.  Or even better CoC, Flame Blast, move out of the way and then Fireball when they start to move again.  Blizzard gives a 50% Fire Resistance and will cancel any flaming effects.  So it does not work well with Fire at all.

Shapeshifting: No comments - never used Morrigans Spider Form - there was never a need!

Next Stop the Mage tower to pick up Wynne!  I think the mages and Flame Demons there are going to be a little rough.  The only Spell I am defintely not going to take is Mana Clash.  To keep things interesting.  Image IPB

You could take Lil along anyway; having her ask if she can open locks is rather magical.... *rowr*

Told you so.   Image IPB

Shock mixes in nicely to reduce cold and fire offsetting each other.  My primalist liked to CoC-Shock-Flame Blast.  But good to know that the flame wasn't really thawing them out anyway.

Abominations and demons die pretty easily.  It's the templars and undead you probably will have to be careful with.

Mage VS adds is all well and good but Boss fights (high dragon) are a problem for an all mage group.
I assume your AW mage will try to tank them?

@Elhanan - yes I like Leliana for her umm - voice. Yhea thats it Image IPB  No rogues though.  Even though an archer would be useful.

@Smiley - ha.  Yep you told me.  Ir just was not needed.  Plus I don't want to give up her spells.

@Norway - I was thinking more of using the Morrigan in Bear form to tank the Dragons.  With Wynne and the main providing healing and buffing.  Non of the forms can be grabbed.

Traveling to the Mage Circle and I got the dreaded Wolf & trap encounter.  I had the two mages stand back to back until all of the Wolves were right on top of us.  Then cast Sleep.  Moved slightly away from them - praying the main would not hit a trap!  Then cast PE and inferno.  Unfortunately I mis calculated the range of the PE and three Wolves charged us.  I also missed up with my horror and hit a Wolf that became Paralyzed with it.  So a total waste there.  On the three remaining wolves I hit with Fireball and Flame Blast.  Which was a mistake, should have hit then with CoC first.  LOL, got excited and made a mistake.  Poor Morigan got chewed up pretty badly, having very low armor and very low defense is a bad combo!  I need to remember to keep Arcane Shield up all the time.

Also, I got the other encounter with the mutated Bear and three Blight Wolves.  Used the same strategy - wait until they all surrounded us and then Sleep.  Moved out of the way and hit a PE + Inferno.  That killed all the Blight Wolves, but the bear surived.  So as soon as he started to move we hit him with Horror + Walking Bomb!  End of fight.

Combat is either super easy if things go as planned or falls apart fast if you mistime something.  I am having a hard time calculating the AOE of the PE.  Keep missing one or two critters.  Having Mass Paralysis would help out a lot!

Too bad about Lil; her songs should qualify.... *tempting ain't it*

I recommend this tactic: Self - When attacked by melee - Glyph of Repulsion. This one has helped me a great deal with three mages; just do not place any Paralysis Glyphs on auto, and you should do well.

You could always just tactic Leliana to never do anything. A walking lockpicker. 4 into Deft Hands, max Strength, give her a shield and stuff her into Cailan's and you have a walking, very survivable (if someone decides to attack her) lockpicker.

Effectively not a party member, but hey, you need the lockpicking. I would go crazy without a rogue in my party, even if they never did anything. Think of all the (actually useless, but still) the loot...

If you're not actually going to use Leliana in combat, put all points in cunning for a better Song of Courage or Valor. It's a small buff but why put her in heavy armor if she isn't fighting.

I'd give her some dex, a bow and Scattershot. Ever more CC for your 3 mage party AND she gets to stay out of harm's way.

Well, the point is that it's supposed to be as all-mage-y as possible, so using her for SoC and SoV is rather...contrary to the point of an all-mage party.  So it really doesn't matter how you spec Leliana, what you put points in.  The only reason to suggest heavy/massive is really if she somehow (I wouldn't know how) attracts attention to herself: the higher armor rating means she won't die in approximately two blows.  Though perhaps maximizing dodge with Evasion, Cailan's Boots and the like may be a better solution, since heavy/massive armors draw threat.  She's really only there to pick locks and loot/steal for you.

While Shale in Rock Mastery gives you quasi-mage talents to complete the group, I'm thinking Stone Aura would also be interesting. You'ld get nice spellpower, regen and defense bonuses and it should not be an inconvenience to 3 mages to have to stay within an immobile aura.

FYI if you want to tank in bear then you will need to stack on the STR (at least 50 by the end game)… without it she won’t do any damage i.e. threat… IMO, Blood = bear and AW = swarm.

I will admit, orginally I planned just three mages.  However, I kind of hit a problem - Morrigan.  Hats off to termokanden for first pointing this out.  I almost ALWAYS play a heroic character.  Sure, every now and then I will goof off with a evil chracter, but I generally like the Hero type.  Morrigan is NOT the Hero type.

I am not sure what to do with her.  She is getting on my nerves!  I miss Baldur's Gate where you could sub in multiple PC for the NPC.  Not sure what I am going to do, but I am starting to get tempted to download the "Slap Morrigan Mod".  Lol.
