Could someone please answer these questions for me?

  • When making a layout from a level what do the 3 different sized boxes on the terain mean? (I have a vague idea it has to do with usable area versus visible area but I want to know precisely)
  • What sizes are recommended for levels and layouts. The wiki says to avoid levels larger than 256x256 but many of the ones in the main game and even the demo seem to be much larger than that. Does this recommendation refer just to the layout size rather than the level size?
  • Where can we find the .lvl files for the original game layouts so that we can edit them? I would like to be able to make a level by modifying an existing one rather than having to start from scratch every time.
Any help understanding this would be appreciated.

I can answer #3 - the lvl files from the original game are not currently available. No eta on when or if Bioware will be releasing them.

I got an error when I tried to make one dimension of a level greater than 32, si I'm pretty sure 32 X 32 is the maximum. The 3 boxes are green-walkable area, yellow-High order of detail for background, and red-low order of detail for background. In other words, put trees, bushes, and other things the player will be able to see in detail in the yellow area, and things like tree-lines in the red area which don't need to be rendered in detail.
