This has been done before by someone else, but quite simply, I don't really like that vid (the ending is pretty amusing though, I have to say).  The badly-dubbed movie effect isn't my favorite thing, but mostly it's because it leaves out quite a few of the cut lines and it also doesn't always keep things in their proper context (or even tell you what that context is).  One thing that's clear after hearing all of this dialogue: this stuff almost certainly wasn't some meant for some extra quests that got cut from the game.

To me, the best explanation of this material is that it would have been the bulk of the "Liara on Ilium" conversations, and was replaced by what we currently have.  You can easily see where many (if not most) of the Shep lines that are in the game would have fit (which explains why there are exactly two extra Shep lines).

The somewhat infamous "Hello, again...Shadow Broker" line is found in the "twrhub_liara_first_intro_d" folder just randomly placed in the "twrhub_liara_norm_intro_d"  folder.  I.e., you would have heard that instead of her threatening that dude with an overdue bill. , so it's unclear what context it was originally supposed to be in.  It's only certain that it was spoken in her office.

Given the way Shep says "I know you're looking for the Shadow Broker...", though, it seems likely that you originally went there with the sole purpose of taking out the Broker (and saying "Hey" to Liara, of course). In the current game, you have no clue she's after the SB until you ask.

Some of her "Shadow Broker" lines even use the same phrases, or cover the same general topics as her current dialogue, and others seem to have been recorded with more or less the same voice direction having been given.  There are a few other reasons to think this was the original Liara sequence, as you'll see.  Or, um, hear.  Whatever. Anyway, here 'tis:

A reasonable guess is that they planned to have a "Destroy The Shadow Broker" mission in the game early on (probably, the original purpose for Redemption was to set this up. I'm fairly sure it too got a major rewrite after hearing this dialogue), and it just didn't work out for whatever reason (most likely a lack of time and/or dissatisfaction with the how that part of her story was turning out, in terms of writing or design or whatever).

So the decision was made to kill it farily early on in development, and put Liara into a "holding pattern" instead so that they could come back to it later in a DLC, giving them time to devote more attention to it, in addition to allowing them to rethink the whole concept.

Edit: had to correct a mistake and replace the vid.

Kinda doubting these will end up being spoilers. If not, oh well.

Well, it's not from the DLC, most of it is already on Youtube and has been for almost 6 months, and I figured the name was clear enough, but I'll change the title anyway.

Seems like they were pllanning on liara and the shadow broker missions being pretty important to the main plot. It seems as thought it would have been a required mission and not just a side quest considering how much collector talk there is

I'm sorry, but your subtitles just made me crack up.

As Shep Walks Into Liara's Office For The First Time:

"Hello again, Shadow Broker."

I have to admit, I haven't heard a "Shepard is the Shadow Broker" theory before.

It was supposed to be the line she spoke to the person in the Holo-Transmission, not, "Have you ever faced an Asari Commando Unit before? Few humans have."

It better be cut or I will be very disappointed in Bioware on destroying Liara even more.

I know.  It was just, the juxtaposition of the lines could be interpreted in a different way, and it made me crack up.

Yeah, it's mostly nothing new.  But, like I said, the other vid left out all the stuff with the hacking/observer quests, and made it seem like the "Hello again...Shadow Broker" line was actually spoken to the SB in person, amongst other things.  If I'd felt like it, I could have pretty easily reconstructed full conversation branches using the normal, in-game Shep dialogue.

Yeah, that was my impression.  They might make use of the Hacking/Observer stuff, but I highly doubt it.  It really seems like you originally couldn't even get those quests without dealing with the Shadow Broker first.

Another thing to realize about these files is that they're not in some special "Shadow Broker" folder.  They're just in there with all the in-game dialogue, and, as mentioned, there's basically no extra Shep lines.  There is a special "Shadow Broker" folder, however:  it has two empty audio files in it.

Also, a correction:  The "Hello again" line is actually in the "twrhub_liara_norm_intro_d"  not the "twrhub_liara_first_intro_d" folder.  The only other line in there that's used is the "Shepard.  It's good to see you again"  one. The only other file in there is also unused, but it's apparently just some stray line, as it doesn't really fit with any of the other dialogue.   It's also not very interesting:  "Just a moment, please."

It's possibly a remnant from some earlier version of her intro, since as it is in the game-as-released, she's a little surprised by Shep's arrival, so I can see her saying that before realizing who just walked into the office.  In any case, it's obvious there's a lot of missing dialogue, as I'm pretty sure the script had more than just the one line for the "Liara Calls The Shadow Broker" scene.

But, it looks like I'm changing the text in the vid after all (and in the OP)....

Liara will still be stuck on Ilium waiting for ME3

Great, not here's hoping I can just break up with her during the mission

Wonder why they cut out the info on why the Collectors were interested in Shepard. IMHO that info starts to explain a lot of the murkiness we have about the Collector/Harbinger fasination with Shepard and turns it into something we can start to grasp. While it does not 'fix' the game it does make it more coherent.

What I think happened:

1) Liara was supposed to join your squad for a limited time - most likely, just for the SB mission.
2) She would then leave your squad and stay on Ilium.
3) They decided not to put that in the main game - either they figured Liara would be a nice draw for DLC, or they ran into trouble writing/coding her mission and decided to put it on the back burner so as not to delay ME2, or some other reason. They thus took the "post-SB" hacking/observer missions and made them the main fixture of Ilium Liara.

Hopefully the DLC will make her a more permanent party member - I'll bet she's another "super-biotic" that can hold the bubble. On the other hand, they probably won't do that if they want to guarantee her appearance in ME3.

It's not needed, really.  Harbinger constantly says stuff about wanting to preserve your body, and people are always going on about genetic diversity.  Miranda even tells you're better than she is in many ways, no tailoring required. Then there's the dialogue on the Collector ship with EDI about them running genetic comparisons with the colonists, and the mutation-inducing plague on Omega. That and all the Collectors used to do was buy people with interesting genetic anomalies.  Personally, I don't think there's anything murky about why they wanted Shep.  The dots are all there; they just decided not to connect them for you.

I don't think it was a writing conflict. Rather, the cutscene/dialog engine may not be able to accept modification by DLC. That's why the Kasumi placeholder had to be in place for the suicide mission. I think the same limitation causes an existing bug whereby you can do Samara and Mordin's loyalty missions after they are dead.

I think you hit on the nub of the problem. While I do get a lot of what was said in game some things are so murky yet supposedly important that when the dots are not connected you are left wondering why. I think this is one case - well at least for me. Of course I suppose some things that seem crystal clear to me are murky to others.

Haven't been on here in a couple of days, so I'll use this topic of yours to reply because it's relevant:

OK, how in god's name does Feron make even the least bit of sense as the Shadow Broker?  I know you're joking, but I've seen other people treat him as a serious candidate.   Maybe if this were Metal Gear Shepard, but it's not.  The conspiracies that do exist in ME are all rather straightforward ones.  People just aren't reverse-double-axle-triple-backflip-or-whatever agents in these games.

I know I'm usually quite heavy on the sarcasm and cynicism, but I wasn't joking here. See my reasoning in this here topic.
