OK, you know what? That actually isn't so crazy. I still think it's highly unlikely, but I can see that making sense under certain circumstances. I'd find it more plausible if Shep really was going to be sold originally, but the SB thought better of it and then used the need to make it look like it wasn't his fault the deal went bad to do a little spying on Cerberus too. A more improvisational, turning lemons into lemonade sort of thing, rather than some inscrutable, planned-from-the-start scheme.
Still don't buy it, but it's not flat-out insane, as it sounded at first.
