I was pretty curious as to what kind of gamers comprise the Dragon Age fan universe with regards to gender, rpg and romance etc.
Please vote here!

Feel free to create links so that as many people can view this as possible to obtain some level of accuracy.

Wow, most DA player are female. And Morrigan & Alistair are domination LIs. What can I say, Bioware suck at marketing with DA2.

Most of the people who have responded to the poll some nine months after the game's release are female.

Yes, that's pretty interesting, but one can't be sure until as many dragon age fans will be able to see this poll as possible. If you can, post the polls link wherever you feel the most varied players can see it for the poll to be as accurate as possible

Um... self-selected polls aren't ever really accurate.  Fun, possibly, but not accurate.

As fun and interesting as that poll may be, it hardly reflects the overall DA fanbase. Given the forum we're in (and especially looking at the LI threads), it's not surprising that the majority in that poll are female gamers who romance Alistair.

However I think a sample of less than a 100 gamers can't truly be considered accurate, so I wouldn't outright say that Bioware suck at marketing with DA2.

Well, it does suck that they won't show a trailer with Lady Hawke!!!!

This poll is relatively new, actually, so with the interests of trying to obtain *some* form of basic insight, I am hoping that voters will post the links in other threads for maximum exposure.
"Self Selection"
Taking this into account .." Such surveys suffer from the fault that the sample is self-selected, that is, you decide whether you wish to participate"
I would assume, that those active enough on this Bioware Social site shouldn't have a problem anonymously voting on such issues. By just being here already means they are the more active sort who would possibly want to share views, ask questions, or just get info. All others, i.e. not active in any social/online communitiy, not to mention those who don't even use computers, will sadly not be counted. But at least this would provide some measure of info regarding the ratio of those players who care anough to be a part of it, since the choices cater to just about all types.  I would think the audience is varied enough. Too bad it can't truly reflect on the entire fan population though.

It's good that you created the poll though. At least it gives us an idea of the people who visit this forum.

By the way, if we take the DA2 forums as an indicator (in particular the M!Hawke and F!Hawke threads), I'd say the female fanbase on the forums isn't that small when compared to the guys.

I actually find that a bit surprising. It is basically fact that there are less fem gamers out there in general, although DA possibly has a higher percentage
Only possible explanation for that I assume, would be that there might be more female gamers who want to be heard, and care about the issue, and less male gamers out of the entire lot who really give a hoot,(or at least are active)  which might contribute to THAT ratio....sigh.
Of course I may be very wrong about that, but again, it's a possibility. I haven't really counted.

My personal guess is that female gamers are at least somewhat more likely to play RPG's for the story. Personally, I really don't have much interest in games without a good story and consequences for your actions. Well written LI's are also very appealing - it adds to the immersion.

I totally agree. In far less sophisticated games, I would find myself longing to immerse myself in the cutscenes in between levels of play. Wanting to know more about what was behind my actions as well as the characters I was involved with. I found that the male friends that I have who play tend to skip through those parts.
As far as LI's are concerned, that in my opinion will be the next trend that will contributing to game popularity, male *or* female.

I had wondered about so many female avatars in the forum. It's a great thing that so many women like gaming, although you don't find too many in other genres like FPS.

I enjoy the romantic part of the game very much, but I just can't bring myself until now to romance Zevran with a male warden. I've tried it but I'm back at the last savegame in no time.

Iam female and have been playing games since I was around 8.

I like a wide range of genre's and am more of a serious gamer than casual.

Though RPG's are my favourite as I love the depth and involvement in rpg's the way you become emotionally attached to the characters and feel a part of that world. But I also love the thrill of fps and survival horror. The only games I don't like are fighting games and platform I find those mind numbingly boring. Romance is fun in games and I enjoyed romancing Alistair best.

I think besides the deep characters, there is the fact that the art isn't as sexist as some fantasy style video game art. There are both attractive men and women, unattractive men and women, and almost the same level of skin is shown for both, with the exception of a few armors and robes that show a little more female skin than male. The body shapes aren't over exagerated nor unrealistically endowed. The sexuality and power of both men and women is explored equally, including homosexual options for both.

I think this really makes women feel more welcome in the DA universe than some other fantasy games where all the women are D+cups, and only get the most impractical skimpy armors to choose from.

I think since video games are more fully transcending into the realm of art and literature, the overall depictions of women and sexuality are becoming much less one sides, and more realistic, and this helps encourage a sharp increase in the number of more serious female gamers.

Bioware is definitely getting something right.

**LOL** I'll have to remember the bolded part the next time my character gets killed by a female gamer while playing MAG.

Much of what you say is fair, though I dislike the female mage robes. They're either matronly or poledancer ****ty - nothing in between.

But the boobs are too big for my liking. In real life I'm somewhere in the A/B range, depending on how much I've eating and general hormone fluctuations. Which is how I like it. But the female characters (well, except possibly the elves, and I don't really like to play elves) have mahoosive norks. They look ridiculous in anything except massive armour (not to mention the impracticality of the low-cut leather armour that leaves the woman's heart and lungs vulnerable to stray arrows).

Morrigan's boobs look nice in her normal costume, but undressed she has the same body as any other human female and it's daft. I know there are mods, but we're talking what Bioware has given us.

And don't even get me started on those vile knickers that have visible cameltoe.

A lot of this is why I'm happier playing male characters, for the mostpart (well, that and the voicesets. My own voice is somewhere in the Claudia Black range - is it too much to ask for a nice contralto voice instead of the ghastly screeching we get to choose from?)

Problem with the nude female bodies is that they are all the same body, elves being a bit thinner and skinnier. The way changing armor/robe/clothing changes the body shape in the game is a little odd, really. It's hard to represent variety when all of each race/gender have a standard body in common.

I didn't think the boobs looked too big. Or at the very least, I would catagorise them in the larger end of a 'realistic and natural looking' spectrum. It's a lot better than some video games and fantasy art. And it's not like they didn't give us plenty to look at when the men are in their 'small cloths', so it's fair, IMO.

I agree the low neckline on the leather armor, as well as bare mid-drift on the dalish armor, are absurd, though. But other than that, it's pretty good, IMO. I like the variety in robes but think they needed more... maybe another variant that its a sleek, simple, tight yet consealing robe, with very subtle decorative embelishment. And also, the male version of the chasind robe is naughty looking, too, so it's fair. Though I wish the man-nipples were showing. Looks silly showing that much pectoral, and no nipple.

But then, I want more variety in everything. :P Like boots! God damn, the light leather boots are all so freekn' ugly! It makes me sad for Zevran.

As for voices... I think the majority of PC voice options, as well as the cheasy lines they say, are absolutely atrocious.  I like the voice I gave my fem elf though... it's that haughty seductive voice.  And I think the wise female elf voice was a decent one too.  You make me very afraid to roll a human female, now, though.  lol  I seem to have a thing for elves.

I get why they used the graphics they did. Guys like teh boobs and so boobs all the women get, including the Chantry ladies in Denerim.

I just want to second your thought about the voices. If you're going to go for the sexy, what, exactly, is wrong with a contralto? It seems as though all the female PC voices are in the soprano range. I don't want Tallulah Bankhead but a woman's voice in the lower female range would be very nice.

I'll show you what I mean about the armoured boobies.

Image IPB

Left: Female human in dragon plate. Acceptable.

Middle: Female human in heavy chain. Silly. The chest is completely flat, then the boobies stick out at 90 degrees. Not acceptable.

Right: My actual boobies. They do not stick out from my pecs at an angle, like DA boobies.

@CalJones:

Yesterday on the Alistair thread, a plan was started to go to Bioware headquarters, burn some bras, and demand custom boobs for DA2.

You in?
