Hello, in ages past I used to be heavy in the development of nwn1 PW servers. It was great fun. Bugs chased me away from NWN2 when it was young, and I am thinking in coming back to NWN2 to try to do a pw-ish project. Looking around I see many changes have been implemented and the community has done a good job at working together. Here is the point of my post:

I am hoping some experienced nwn2 pw developers who have worked on nwn1 projects would be kind enough to give me some pointers/ a crash course in differences between the design and development of nwn1 PWs to nwn2. I don't need any info on differences of the toolset, or building of areas etc. I am talking about the underlying PW setup.

Database setup, any third party apps, useful downloads (NWN2 fresh install right now), pointers, etc.

Any input is appreciated.

There's an IRC chat room for NWN2 where a lot of the PW people hang out.  A great place to ask questions.

Beyond that:

1) Use the haks as released on the NWVault, don't recompile into your own "mypw-whatever.hak" file.  Instead, make your custom 2da hak to align everything.  Cuts down on unnecessary downloads for everyone (not nice having 10 gb of space taken up by 8 different versions of the same content for example).
2) Have a high ratio of interior to exterior areas.  Make sure each exterior is there for a reason, not just to give spacing between areas.
3) Use the ADL.  Much better for everyone.  If you're stuck for a file hosting method, highly consider using Dropbox.
4) Consider whether or not there isn't already a project out there that closely approximates what you want to do.  If so, think about joining that team, instead of adding yet one more under populated PW to the list.  Unfortunately, the way NWN2 was released and developed over the years meant the MP community isn't as big as it should be.

If I've missed anything important, I'm sure someone will add to the list (or correct it).

Get on IRC, it's where we are all at, everything else is secondary, lot of good NWN1 and NWN2 folks there.

Issues are the autodownloader and working with it ( and using drop box to distribute files ).

Must have items, mysql, NWNx, xp_bugfix, everything by RWS which is a lot, the BCK and Tuopon's City. I have a script library other PW's are starting to use, and a monster pack. Yatt and NWN2 mapper for making exteriors and interiors.

We are trying to get PW's using common hak's so those getting one world and go to another one don't have as much to download. ( more smaller haks instead of doing the single massive hak since the autodownloader manages it )

More info is at the citadel school -- > http://nwcitadel.for...splay.php?f=140

Has complete run thru of setting up NWNx and the database under extending the engine, and a very good overview on quality control requirements for making lag free areas in the exteriors section.

I used nwnx for some time with nwn1. However, with some custom compression coding i way prefered the built in database. Is there a built in database with nwn2?

Thanks for the tips, I ran in to my first problem. Windows 7 64 bit... So I need to solve that first.

Before I dedicate myself to any project, I need to see if things are as frustrating to me as they were before. My current project isn't really a pw, and I am sure it is way different than anything out there. At least in my casual looking around I haven't seen anything even close.

Yes, it's the same database as before. The campaign database.

p.s. There are a number of "getting started" resources online (like on nwn2.wikia.com), but they look outdated. What you actually need may be a pretty small list, but a lot of it is going to be subjective and it depends on how you like to build.

BTW, what are you trying to build? I generally encourage those who come here with big ideas to look for other similar projects first. Building a persistent world requires so many different skills. It's not unlike a marathon. Many people can start, but not everyone can finish.

Get on IRC, it's where you will find out what you need to know.

( windows 7 64 bit works with nwn2 )

What I am currently pondering building is nothing more than a single area module with 4 npcs, and some background ai code essentially. that's pretty much it. oh, and a backend database to record basic things for players.

It's something I could do in javascript on a webpage for testing, but if i get this base ai code I want, I will do something with it. Originally it was going to be a browser interface, but if nwn can handle what I want that would be a preferable alternative to me.

Where can I find the IRC information?
