Take an entire side of beef and throw it through an industrial ventilation fan.
That's what a volus without its suit looks like.

Good point, but not quite what I meant.
What I meant is I want to know without meaty bits flying everywhere.
Like in concept art or visiting the volus homeworld or something.

I always felt like they have wattles under the mask.  Kinda like a turkey.

I really don't want to know. They're probably ugly as sin.

We kinda know what they look like from Ascension: a lot like humans and asari. And actually, I just remembered that in the Revelation novel, Voluses (Volii? Or is 'Volus' also the plural form?)  don't have to wear exo-suits, just special breather gear, so we get a little description of their appearance.  Apparently, that's where I got the wattles idea from:

"...his voice wheezing through the rebreather and the folds of skin at this throat."

Anderson is also reminded of manatees when watching them, though that seems to be more about the way they carry themselves rather than a physical resemblance, though the way they look in the game now actually is rather sirenian:

I haven't read the book, but in what situation does Anderson encounter suitless Volus?  They aren't supposed to be able to survive in most areas humans find acceptable without a pressure suit due to their high-pressure home world.  Anderson could not have been having a fun time.  Or was he in a suit himself?

In Chora's Den.  The volus was the bartender.  They apparently changed the volus somewhere in between the book going to press and the game being released. As a guess, I'd say it had something to do with the design not really working too well when they built models based on it, so the volus got exo-suits and the Codex got some rewrites.

They are beings of pure beauty. No human, nor indeed any of the other council races, can dare look at them without exploding from their marvelousness. I'd describe them, but no words can do them justice.

Alternatively, sort of like fat walrusdwarfs.
