Both Baldur's Gate games have a lot of companions. Most of them truly memorable. But which one is your favorite?

I'll list all NPCs here, please choose your favorite and leave a comment! :)  (I'll make a separate poll for BG1 later)

Viconia takes the gold.

Minsc the silver.

Jaheira, Imoen and Aerie tie for bronze.

Nalia, Valygar, Yoshimo and Korgan are bottom with 0 votes.

Boo-hoo, I like Nalia and Korgan. But I voted for Viconia ....

Companions? What is this DA? Back in my day they were called NPCs.

Aerie FTW.

Favourite npc's:
- Viconia because she is actually a believable and complex character
- Minsc (and Boo) because of the brilliant banters
- Xan because he's cute
- Shar-Teel because she's a feminist like myself:P
- Korgan because he effectively shuts Aerie up by threatening to spank her

NPC's i hate:
- Dynaheir because she's arrogant, pretentious and uses words like 'thee' and 'thou'
- Ajantis because he's an idiot
- Anomen. Everybody knows why.

Absolutely anyone but Anomen. I wanted to drown that pr*ck in a fountain from about ten minutes in.

His romance music makes my PC projectile vomit all over his family shield. Favourites of mine are probably (BG2), Viconia, Nalia, Korgan, Edwin, Cernd ... Jaheira on a good day.

Edit: Tried to make one for the BG1 NPCs, but the poll limit is 20 options ... and there are 24 NPCs ... we sure are spoiled.

Not surprising that all three romance NPCs get a lot of the votes.

It is strange to me that Minsc gets soo many votes. He doesn't have all that much banter at all and I cannot remember anything memorable about it. BG2 Imoen is mainly depressed which ruins the athmosphere for me as well.

I was tied between Jan, Korgan, Yoshimo and Aerie because I feel that their interjections are more 'spot-on' than those of the other NPCs. In the end I picked Aerie because in all the BG2 games I played I realised I took her along most often.

While you don't NEED them to actually finish the game (which may not be true for everyone), they certainly add flavour to the game. Without them, Baldur's Gate would have been a niche game like Icewind Dale. If i want to play a solo game, i'd rather play Diablo, thank you. Given the limitations of the game engine, the devs did an excellent job with the joinable npc's. The fact that so many people hate Anomen is proof of that.:P

I thought Keldorn would have more votes, considering his battle prowess. He gets beaten by the pretend-paladin.

bg2 like

Yoshimo!!!

Yoshimo is just too awesome.

bg2 hate

Anomen

I mean seriously even the first time you meet him you are like WTF!!! and wish there was an option to punch him in the face. I did manage to do 1 playtrough with him though. He is pretty powerful imo but god i wish he would stfu.

bg1 like

Xan

Nothing more funny than xan trying to extinguish your good mood at every banter.

bg1 hate

Jaheira and dynaheir.

Jaheira is just annoying as **** with her boss personality and always second guessing your opinion. And dynaheir is like someone said above she think herself high and mighty.

I thought it made sense, really. Dynaheir is a Rashemi witch. The witches of Rashemen hold all the power. It's why Minsc defers to her even though he is clearly a superior combatant at the early levels you acquire her. Likewise, Edwin is an insufferable jerk because Red Wizards hold all the cards in Thay and consider most foreigners potential slaves. It's interesting Edwin is such a beloved character while Dynaheir is often criticized. I can only surmise most people overlook his dismal personality due to humor value.

I like Jan and Edwin the best. Unlike a lot of people, I enjoy Anomen also. For a Lawful Good/neutral character, he is pretty rude and I love it. Especially when he tells certain annoying NPCs to shut up. I love Korgan for the same reason. I'm not an evil lover or anything, I generally play with mostly good/neutral partys.

Don't care

I find Cernd the most boring BG2 NPC. Nalia is just a weak Imoen with an annoying personality, but not annoying enough to dislike. I find valygar boring too.

Dislike

I don't like Aerie at all. She is so annoying. Korgan and Anomen get major points for yelling at her occasionally. Shes the only character I dislike. It is too bad I dislike her, because she can be incredibly powerful. Oh well. I don't really dislike anyone else.

Any NPC not mentioned is between Like and Don't care

I don't really have a particular preference for any BG1 NPC. They are kind of bland in comparison to BG2. I guess if I was forced to pick some characters, I'd say

Like

Alora/Edwin/Xzar. I like their soundsets a lot and they make me laugh.

Don't Care

Everyone not mentioned

Dislike

Xan. Annoying voice and annoying personality.

Speaking only about BG2 here, as I haven’t played BG1 nearly enough to form a solid opinion out of most of the characters there.

My favorite characters would be Jaheira and Imoen. (Went for Imoen in the poll)

Jaheira, well, I actually like her early game attitude too. Sure, she was a bit crude from time to time and seemed to think that she was the boss of everyone, but no one's perfect. And I'm sure her husband's brutal death didn't really help her being nice, lord knows I'd be a pain in the ass in her situation. :P She only had the party's good in mind, I believe. I admire her toughness.

As for Imoen, she is absent for half or so of the game, but in the remaining time, she really grew into me (I really hope that was the right idiom...). I like her cheerful and fun personality, which was understandably reduced somewhat by the torture, losing her soul and hearing that she is a child of an evil god. And well, she's the PC's little sister. Blood is thicker than water, as they say.

And a special mention goes for Mazzy. She is brave, noble and kind, all admirable qualities, and I like halflings. Plus, she was a pure killing machine in ToB and late SoA. I think she had like half of the kills in my last game.

As for characters I don't like. I strongly dislike Keldorn, mainly because he blatantly neglected his family. Also because he had a hard time tolerating the less morally concerned people, who I happen to like (I'm looking at you, Viconia).

I don't quite like Edwin either...that bastard just couldn't let me steal his amulet...that inconsiderate ape. *grumbles*

Minsc was pretty annoying too, but mostly okay.

Anyway, this is just my opinion. Other characters I do like, more or less (some less than others...).

My personal favorite is Viconia because there's so much development with her character during the course of the game. From what I recall, her ToB ending is kind of a letdown though. I also like Minsc and Edwin because they're funny all the time and Keldorn deserves a mention too because he tries to act like a wise old father figure to a good aligned main char.

OTOH, I recently realized that I don't particularly like Jan. His jokes are too much over the top for my tastes. Also, I rarely take Cernd along because he's so dull and his stats suck.

Personality wise, Haer'Dalis.  He edges out over Jan solely because he benefits from drawing from the Planescape backdrop.

Battle prowess, I actually like Cernd best of all.  Maybe because I'm recently doing a campaign of the least used NPCs (leaving me with no fighters).  I really love his ability to flip flop between tanking and casting.  I have to beef him up with potions and spells when he's meat shielding, but no more than I'd need to do with a blade.  He's not the best at either, but he's always got something helpful to do against every opponent.

It was a close match between Aerie, Imoen and Viconia (she has a very... interesting history), but ultimately I gave my vote to Aerie. :) I've always had a soft spot for the damsel-in-distress types.

Aerie (if you like the oh I'm a so unprotected, inexperienced little angel girl that can do MASSIVE DAMAGE OF 200 HP in one fight :D)

And Minsc and his righteous ass kicking all the way from BG1 to ToB.

Aerie is my favorite, not only because of the maturity and growth she undergoes from SoA -> ToB, but also because she's a beast spellcaster. I also just realized that out of like the 7 or 8 playthroughs I've done of BGII, I took Aerie in all but one of my runs. She's awesome!

Minsc gets second place for me. Yeah, I realize he's a bit one dimensional, but if I was on an epic quest to reclaim my soul I'd want a freakishly large juggernaut and his miniature giant space hamster watching my back. Besides, his war cry against Irenicus in Hell is awesome: "I grow weary of shouting battlecries when fighting this mage. Evil, meet my sword! Sword... MEET... EVILLLLL!!!!!!!!"

My number 1 is Viconia. It was rewarding to see her personality develop as she experienced friendship and kindness for the first time in her life.

Number 2 is Minsc for his hilarious banter. Usually I don't support the idea of having one character purely for comic relief, but he's great.

I also loved Carsomyr... sorry, I mean Keldorn. (Why oh why did they have to restrict that sword to paladins?)

Anomen was annoying, it sucked that he was the only romance option for female players!

Jaheira. Virtually every other female character was a damsel in distress when you met her. When you met Jaheira in BG1 she was happily married (Don't know if Khalid was) and a well known Druid and Harper. She lost all of that following you and still remained by your side.

Minsc for second. There simply is no other character like Minsc.
