Hawkes father was an apostate mage who died. Duncan was not a mage.
Two non-mages can have a mage child. It's not impossible that MamaHawke and Duncan made the player-character Hawke, no matter his/her class.
And then it stands to reason that MamaHawke and PapaHawke had Bethany and Carver, and they were a happy little family of apostates! Are you saying that PapaHawke wouldn't train his wife's bastard in magic? C'mon, give the guy some credit...!

Maybe what they mean by 'died' is that he quit being a mage after being drafted into the Wardens thus his wife disowned him!
If you are insinuating that Duncan had a family prior to being a warden you are sorely mistaken. Read the books before suggesting something like that.

Sorry if there's another thread already. Searched but didn't find anything.
Duncan had a rather colourful past, and he easily could have had a child before even becoming a Grey Warden. And, judging by his encounter with the mage in the tower in The Calling, he continued to pursue the ladies even after the joining, so it could have even happened after. He would not have necessarily even known about it. I was thinking about this and how it would be neat, but probably unlikely, until I looked at the default Hawke screenshots and then back at Duncan and realized they look rather similar... Though perhaps, that's just me. And it could also simply be that the designers like the look of rugged, beardly men. But, perhaps it was intentional?
Anyone else have any thoughts?
Hate to burst your bubble, but that would only work if this was a fixed look and even then its farfetched, I mean like, what because he has a beard too? The fact remains that Hawke can look any which way, including colour, so it just doesn't work even for Cannon's sake. It would just be too limiting character wise.

Hawke's father is apostate mage who died. Duncan is Rivaini(strongly resemble his Rivaini mother), whole Hawke's family was native Feralden(lore-wise) and If you check both character background how could Duncan relate to Hawke.

Unless someone decides to pull out the, "You are NOT the father" card, NO.
Speaking about you not being the father,
Imagine Hawke's Father's Spirit in the middle of The Fade

I thought Grey Wardens were sterile without the use of magic?

They are not sterile(Morrigan) but i think the prospect of tainted babies puts them off.

That said, I highly doubt Duncan is the father.

There was an odd lingering association in my mind. Thanks for clearing that up.JamesMoriarty123 wrote...
It actually says in conversation (with Alistair I think) that Grey Wardens are indeed sterile. So too are the Immortals from Highlander
There can be only one!
Also, I'm not convinced by those who cite Morrigan as proof against this. It was a Ritual, after all. Who's to say that she didn't conceive by magical means? Or conceived at all, in a sort of Anakin Skywalker sort of way that required the participation of a Grey Warden in a ritual?
