I'm about to play through ME2 again, and I'm looking for the "best" order to complete the missions, and which characters are the best to take on which missions.  I am mostly concerned with what makes the most sense story-wise, and what gives you the best or most dialogue during the missions.

Thanks
:D

I have no idea about which order is best for loyalty missions, but I can say this is my favorite recruitment order right here:

1. Zaeed

2. Mordin

3. Garrus

4. Kasumi

5. Jack

6. Grunt

7. Tali

8. Samara

9. Thane

10. Legion

In the end, though, you should remember that it is an entirely arbitrary process.

I would recommend at least once recruiting Legion asap and then doing whatever missions you had to skip. Taking him on Tali's missions was pretty fun.

You can only fit in one of two missions after the Reaper IFF mission, sometimes not at all if you don't wake up Legion. Just keep that in mind. And if you're playing through on Insanity and not as a soldier, you should probably take zaeed and whatever other squadmmate and go get grunt first

After finishing Legion's loyalty mission, the IFF is active. So recruit him as soon as possible if you want. Just dont do his loyalty mission first.

I'm pretty sure after you activate him, it only lets you do one more mission before the IFF activates anyway. That's supposed to allow you to do his Loyalty mission, but if you do something else, it will activate after that. Whatever, my Shepard hated the Cerberus crew anyhow and was in no rush to go save them.

My recommendation on recruitment, although this is mostly for personal reasons/the classes I use.

1. Mordin (Allows you to install your upgrades in the lab, and is mandatory)
2. Garrus (You're right there and he's handy, also has special ship upgrade)
3. Grunt (Great for some heavy backup if you're using Mordin, sort of like a tankier Jacob)
4. Jack (Helpful if you need biotics)
5. Tali (All-tech based on countering machines is handy, also has special ship upgrade)
6. Thane (Biotics rather than combat supplement non-biotic classes well, sort of a Garrus replacement)
7. Samara (Recruitment mission is more fun with Tali and Thane :D Helpful if you don't like Jack's biotics)
8. Legion (Would get him as early as possible, but not if saving the crew is part of the plan)

Loyalties can come pretty much whenever based on which squadmates you intend to use, although if you want to save the crew, you'll of course need to complete Legion's right after recruiting him last.

While you can never get all the unique dialogue in one playthrough, I did do a sort-of-RP playthrough where I did my best. As far as order goes, it doesn't matter a whole lot. It's your game so you can play it anyway you want. I suggest looking at the Unique Dialogue Guide done by the very awesome and thorough Ecael. My "perfect" RP playthrough went something like this after Freedom's Progress. I'll list the mission, then in parethesis I'll list who I brought, then I'll follow it up with some comments.

Citadel

Recruit Kasumi
Talk to Council to get Spectre status back
Do some Assignments (saved Crime in Progress for when I had Tali)

Omega
Recruit Zaeed
Do some assignments

Recruit Garrus
(Miranda + Zaeed )
You go to Omega with the intent of recrutiing Mordin first, but after finding out that Archangel is in trouble it made sense to get him first.
Brought Zaeed for unique dialogue with Blue Suns Leader (Grunt has some unique dialogue with Garm if you bring him, but I hadn't recruited him yet)

Recruit Mordin (Jacob + Kasumi)
Brought Garrus to the entrance for some unique dialogue but didn't bring him in as I didn't want to expose him to the disease.

Recruit Grunt (Garrus + Mordin)
Some unique dialogue between Shepard and Mordin at end.

Recruit Jack (Miranda + Zaeed )
Zaeed has unique dialogue with the Warden.
Miranda has unique dialogue with Jack.

Horizon (Mordin + Grunt)
Mordin has some unique dialogue at the start where he talks about testing his seeker swarm countermeasure

Omega
Do the Patriarch assignment with Grunt for some bonus dialogue.
Talk to Ish with Jacob + Miranda for some unique dialogue.

Recruit Tali (Garrus + Kasumi)
Not really any unique dialogue, but having a strong tech team is helpful.

Citadel
Did Crime in Progress with Tali

Recruit Thane (Jacob + Tali)
Jacob is supposed to have some unique dialogue, but I never noticed it.

Recruit Samara (Thane + Jack)
Jack has some unique dialogue with Elnora.
Having a strong biotic team helps.

Illium
Do Indentured Service with Tali

Collector Ship (Samara + Miranda...I think.)

(Now I'm not 100% sure of the order I did the Loyalty missions, but it doesn't really matter)

Miranda Loyalty (Jack)
Jack has some unique dialogue at the end

Garrus Loyalty (Tali...i think)
I did this as soon as possible as I romanced Garrus and I didn't want to miss out on the turian sex advice from Mordin.

Mordin Loyalty (Jacob)
Jacob has some unique dialogue, but so do a few other squadmates

Grunt Loyalty (Mordin)

Tali Loyalty
(Garrus)
A lot of people like to get Legion early and bring him for some unique dialogue, but bringing him to the Flotilla seems really really really stupid from an RP perspective.

Jacob Loyalty (Miranda)

Thane Loyalty (Garrus)
Garrus has a response to Thane's Citadel dialogue, as well as comments on the Shepard VI.

Samara Loyalty (N/A)

Jack Loyalty (Miranda)
Should be a small bit of bonus dialogue from Miranda or Jacob.

Zaeed Loyalty (Garrus)

Kasumi Loyalty (N/A)

Reaper IFF (Miranda + Grunt)

Legion Loyalty (Tali)
Tali is a beast on this mission. Sadly, no unique dialogue.

Suicide Mission
Part 1
Fire Team Leader: Garrus
Tech : Tali
Squad: Miranda + Samara ( Reave + Warp just shreds the collectors)

Part 2
Fire Team Leader: Garrus
Biotic: Samara
Escort: Mordin
Squad: Tali + Grunt

Part 3 (Final Boss)
Squad: Garrus + Miranda

Try to get Legion before Tali's loyalty mission and then bring him with you to her mission. I was geeking out when I saw Legion talking to quarians in a video a day or 2 ago.

Playing Sentinel, Engineer or Infiltrator, I'd switch Garrus and Kasumi. With Kasumi you get the Locust, and more importantly, the 3rd tech upgrade (unlocks tech cooldowns)

Thanks Janus.  This is the sort of thing I was looking for.  I'll be playing some variation of your playthrough.

One small note - at the start of the Horizon mission, Mordin gives his speech by radio if he isn't on your squad.  But I like taking him anyway - it makes sense, and it gives him something to do.

You should get Legion first then.

Only things I always do the same time no matter what the playthrough is:

* Everything else
* Reaper IFF
* Tali Loyalty (bringing Legion)
* Legion Loyalty (bringing Tali)
* Crew captured
* Immediately go through the O4 relay after them

I just like that order for my ending.
