You know what would be nice?

Dyes! Dyes for all one's clothes. The robe might look colour-wise like a banana, but one could alleviate it with some black dye.

Good idea, although I would have to resist the temptation to clad my whole team in black & red like some kind of medievel Farscape Peacekeeper squad.

It would be nice to have a full party who is wearing the same color sceme.  It would show group unity....or something.

Wait, wait, wait....there's only been 2 mage outfits show last i checked and neither looked anything like the origins ones (which was one of the smartest choices bioware made) in fact Bethany's new mage outfit (aka clevage mahoney) looks like most the art posted on this page thread alone

What was the point of this thread again?

I guess the point of this thread is to discuss people's hopes for the new game and their displeasure with Origin's outfits (or lack of).

For me, I just want some variety in normal robes. Maybe something slightly more dramatic and less banal for really powerful mages. I definitely did not like the furry/feather shoulder outfits in the first game, almost everything went wrong with that outfit.

Also, I hope that females don't wear ridiculous and overly sexualised outfits that make no sense. I get the whole "sex appeal sells" angle, but really, they just say "stab me here" wherever they're most exposed.

In NWN2, you coudl buy/fashion capes..matching, enchanted capes with insignia on it.

My whole party had long, blue capes with a sword and fire symbol on it.
It was...GLORIOUS!

That's a Mage outfit.

I'm of the opinion that everyone in a fantasy setting should have less colourful clothes, more grimy and dirty clothing. And everyone should be wearing light armor most of the time.

The Fact that this outfit was never in the game still irks me.

That is an alluring gown and Headpiece, too.  I wish Bioware would add them this time around in DA II.

P.S. Do you see the dagger, too?

Looking at this outfit, what strikes me is its  impracticality. Too damn long, too easy to get caught on stuff. And imagine trying to climb ladders in that. The hat's OK if you're trying to keep out of the sun, I guess.

Until NWN1 discredited the look my PnP mages always wore tunic and pants, or whatever the equivalent in that setting was. With maybe a cloak if it was cold.

I think bioware's art department must have some sort of hate for designing clothing/robes, because i really cant think any game where they made it look good or even "cool". Well except maybe morrigan's leathery robe. ^_^

Yeah it was something of a long standing issue, until HotU NWN mage ran around in jumpers and such. Robes did not exist.

They should make robes look less "druidic" or whatever. I don't want to look like a barbarian wearing all that fur, leaves, feathers, and tree branches (unless I was a shapeshifter/keeper anyways). I was thinking more "scholarly" robes like the ones you get when you begin in the Circle of Magi.

Yes, and better hoods/hats too. The mage hats we got in this game look like something you'd see at the Circus.

NWN1 discredited the look of tunics and pants?

You mean like the male versions of the robes worn by Circle mages. The female versions looked anything but scholarly, and it didn't help that women wearing those looked like they forgot the bra goes under the clothes.

Remember the endless ranting about "clown suits"? I didn't think they looked that bad myself.

Oh, heh, I didn't start posting on BioBoards until after HotU came out, but I suppose some of those outfits did look kind of like clown suits, now that you mention it. I didn't really have a problem with them either, though.

I like how Arilyn Moonblade looks in this pic: Nice, practical clothes and light armor for being on the road.

Anyways, talking specifically about mage robes... my favorite ideal example I've found is this:

I've never really liked the mage robes that are all flowy and cumbersome looking - those only look sensible for Circle types who are cloistered in their towers all day. I think that pic above strikes a nice balance between practical and striking. She looks fancy and magical without looking like she's going to trip over her clothes (or freeze if there's even a slight chill in the air, like a certain other mage lady).

I agree. Gaudy is an understatement to some of the suggestions here.

Naysayers need to realise that this discussion is twofold.

Point 1:
Not enough variety. Scratch that. There weren't that many pieces by themselves, forget variety. We had Morrigans robes, Mage Circle Robes, and Furry robes. Contrast that to the numerous plate armour sets in the game. Juggernaut, Warden-Commander, Cailan's Armour, Templar's Outfit - etc. Let's not even get started on the weapons. Mages had a total of what 3 unique staves? Whereas plate wearers got cool weapons like Asala and Topsiders' Honour - that came with their own cool backstory!

To salt the wounds, DLCs offered Starfang, Bloodblight, and more plate armour (!!!). It's like the devs couldn't even be bothered to add a little something for their spirit healers, blood mages and shapeshifters (I'm sure they're out there ;P).

I won't even touch the subject of leather gear... Wade's armour, Felon's Coat, Dalish armour - all a testament to a fortune the dye sellers make in Thedas.

Point 2: Actual designs of the outfits. Here things get murky. I see people posting a lot of things they'd like - and who I am to say what's right and what's not? Taste is subjective. What we can all agree on (I hope) is varied designs would be a pleasant thing. I'm fine with mages in their (matronly IMO) Circle garb and their lovely ornate lampshade hats. Some people like them, and that's fine.

What is not okay is when Reaper's Vestments look basically like Chasind robes. Which is what I hope isn't the case in DA2.

The idea behind an RPG is that you're going on a quest, and on your way, you acquire items of mythic proportions (Legion of the Dead set, for instance) to achieve your heroic ends.

For those saying that travelling clothes should not be fancy -  yes, I agree. It's inane for a new mage to have ancient, powerful attire. Starting gear can look drab, or ordinary. Epic gear needs to have that wow factor to it. That's the beauty of progression in an RPG.

If the technology were such that we could show our raiments going through the motions of wear and tear, I would sign up immediately. But we're not there yet where our Grey Wardens have to go to the local laundromat to get their [Minrathous Magisters' Garments] cleaned.

The bottom line is, if an item is named Tevinter Robes, then it better look somewhat impressive because Mages are the cream of the crop in Tevinter society.
