Naysayers need to realise that this discussion is twofold.

Point 1:
Not enough variety. Scratch that. There weren't that many pieces by themselves, forget variety. We had Morrigans robes, Mage Circle Robes, and Furry robes. Contrast that to the numerous plate armour sets in the game. Juggernaut, Warden-Commander, Cailan's Armour, Templar's Outfit - etc. Let's not even get started on the weapons. Mages had a total of what 3 unique staves? Whereas plate wearers got cool weapons like Asala and Topsiders' Honour - that came with their own cool backstory!

To salt the wounds, DLCs offered Starfang, Bloodblight, and more plate armour (!!!). It's like the devs couldn't even be bothered to add a little something for their spirit healers, blood mages and shapeshifters (I'm sure they're out there ;P).

I won't even touch the subject of leather gear... Wade's armour, Felon's Coat, Dalish armour - all a testament to a fortune the dye sellers make in Thedas.

Point 2: Actual designs of the outfits. Here things get murky. I see people posting a lot of things they'd like - and who I am to say what's right and what's not? Taste is subjective. What we can all agree on (I hope) is varied designs would be a pleasant thing. I'm fine with mages in their (matronly IMO) Circle garb and their lovely ornate lampshade hats. Some people like them, and that's fine.

What is not okay is when Reaper's Vestments look basically like Chasind robes. Which is what I hope isn't the case in DA2.

The idea behind an RPG is that you're going on a quest, and on your way, you acquire items of mythic proportions (Legion of the Dead set, for instance) to achieve your heroic ends.

For those saying that travelling clothes should not be fancy -  yes, I agree. It's inane for a new mage to have ancient, powerful attire. Starting gear can look drab, or ordinary. Epic gear needs to have that wow factor to it. That's the beauty of progression in an RPG.

If the technology were such that we could show our raiments going through the motions of wear and tear, I would sign up immediately. But we're not there yet where our Grey Wardens have to go to the local laundromat to get their [Minrathous Magisters' Garments] cleaned.

The bottom line is, if an item is named Tevinter Robes, then it better look somewhat impressive because Mages are the cream of the crop in Tevinter society.

well...even though we got armors like cailan's or warden commander's, they were still retextures of the massive armor model.
i hope that in DA2 they give us more armor models and the opportunity to dye the said armors

That's true but Cailan's Armour vs. Warden Commander's vs. Blood Dragon... they're all very different looking. The illusion of difference isn't even an option for mage and rogue characters!

The Reaper's Vestments  basically look like someone dyed and dolled up Chasind Robes.

Same here. The Blood mage robe in awaking is the one I wear and is my favorite, but its still not vary good. If it was red I would have loved it. How hard can it really be to make a red robe?

Looking at this outfit, what strikes me is its  impracticality. Too damn long, too easy to get caught on stuff. And imagine trying to climb ladders in that. The hat's OK if you're trying to keep out of the sun, I guess.

Until NWN1 discredited the look my PnP mages always wore tunic and pants, or whatever the equivalent in that setting was. With maybe a cloak if it was cold.

Tunic and Pants.
IMHO does not exactly look like a mage ... Tunic and pants are traditionally associated with commoners although there is really nothing tactically wrong with mage wearing it. Not any more wrong them mages taking the field in pairs of boxers.:o

I actually really like that design, Nightcobra8928. It's not too ridiculously intricate, looks like the wearer could have some armor under the robes, and is an interesting design. Bethany's revealing outfit also has a red scarf, so we're kind of (not really) close to that design. :P

Ah... A Red Mage outfit will totally be perfect. But that's mostly the Final Fantasy fanboy in me talking.

It is quite practical in terms of function and maneuverability though, compared to some mage outfits I've seen.

Anyways, talking specifically about mage robes... my favorite ideal example I've found is this:

I've never really liked the mage robes that are all flowy and cumbersome looking - those only look sensible for Circle types who are cloistered in their towers all day. I think that pic above strikes a nice balance between practical and striking. She looks fancy and magical without looking like she's going to trip over her clothes (or freeze if there's even a slight chill in the air, like a certain other mage lady).

This one actually would work quite well.

But her outfit looks like the females in my office. Noticed the white top and the black skirt?

Cool, yet not over the top and also allow a wide range of movement.

Posted this on romance thread aswell, but this time it's for the dress!
The more generic robes of course would look like mass production, but SHOULD still not look tarnished and boring.
But what if our Hawke found some ancient elven garments that truly showed power and looked ceremonial.
The finder of such a robe would no doubt be powerful enough that mild impracticalities of these robes would be forgotten.

Gosh, I just want to be pretty Posted Image
