That would make sense, I doubt the Chantry would want mages to look strong.Russalka wrote...
Maybe it was the Chantry that forced them to look like that.

I'd like to see some battle mage get-ups. Not an arcane warrior nor squishy wizard either. Someone who's in the midst of battle kicking arse and taking names with AoE spells. That means they have to have enough armor to protect them without limiting their movement much. Think something like this:
I really like this one. It doesn't have the lame "robey" look to it. It looks like it'd be right at home in a Glen Cook novel.

But what about Tevinter mages? They have some kind of feather fetish?mllrthyme wrote...
Too busy running from the Chanty to get decent clothing.

Yes. Yes they do.

Unlike a warrior's armor, a mage robe provide zero protection on its own and thus does not need to be functional in nature.
Perhaps an option should exist to change the appearance of his or her robe by transferring the enchantment to any item of clothing ? Because while warriors must wear his tincan for protection, a mage might as well wear anything, really. There is nothing tactically wrong with a mage battling in a pair of boxers or a wedding dress.

And here is my take.

Showing off your garters is not dignified.

Agreed. I hate all the other robes though. Well, if I'm playing a "stolen from black metal bandmember parents" type, I MIGHT wear the witch robes on a male wizard.

Maybe it's because I am conservative, but I like my peopl to have things fully covered. Nothing like giving your enemy easy shot at your heart. Mages need all the protection they can get.
A robe isn't going to stop an arrow regardless. Mages uses spells and their brainpower (tactics) for protection. There isn't much you can do to save them if they draw too much attention anyway.
My mage warden could defeat most enemies bare-handed wearing only a pair of boxers. Mages are just that awesome.
LOL red herring aside, would it be possible to make robes with no bonus but a lot of rune slot so there is at least some freedom as to fashion style ?

Anyway, I agree with the ugly hats, got the "hide helm" - mod as soon as I saw the first cowl. Would not have my poor mage running around kicking ass while looking like an idiot. Then I just made her an AW.
What I would also like to see would be more "battle mage" - style armour. Doesn't have to be for Arcane Warriors, but more "I'm not a squishy mage and I can run away from enemies without tripping over the hem of my skirt." Trousers! Give us trousers and make them look awesome.
Something like the t9 (or was it t10) mage armour in WoW. I liked the trousers.

Eh, didn't bother me too much. They'd look better if they weren't fur, to be sure, but it wasn't a major turn-off point.

We agree that the Tevinter robes look dignified, then.
