So I built my first dual wielding templar and I'm INCREDIBLY disapointed with it.  I JACKED points into willpower and strength thinking Holy Smite would do some damage and it doesn't.  The only thing Holy Smite is useful for is separting a crowd (its knock down ability) so you can pick them out one at a time.  My willpower is up to 100 points (via all dlc and in awakening) and so far the biggest damage I've seen is 70 hit points.  Thank god my other specialtys are Spirit Warrior and Beserker.

Well willpower is one of the worst stats, and you can get through the whole game without spending a single point in it.

You don't need it as a Templar either. Templar is for 2 things:

1. Being able to equip Templar-specific items to gain spell resistance.

2. AoE knockdown with Holy Smite. The knockdown, not the damage.

You have Spirit Warrior, and you took Willpower to 100 for Templar??? How about them SW abilities?

I mean, I luv me some Will for mana & stamina, but even I know it is not a primary ability. Try the respec books and leave Will at 30-40.

my character is doing fine as far as damage goes, thanks to tomes. I was just hoping Holy Smite would be worthy of its name.

Holy Smite does (100 + Willpower) * .2 damage.

With 0 Willpower, it would do 20 damage.

With 100 Willpower, it would do 40 damage.

It's used mainly for its stun/knockback.

It's completely up to you. Just saying - you could do much, much more damage if you dropped most of that willpower and spent it elsewhere.

I think it's been illustrated very well in the post above that Holy Smite is BAD for damage :)

Where do Stamina/Mana and Mental Resistance come from?

Gear and talents. Deathblow, Feast of the Fallen, and Spellboom/Rejuvenation really make it hard to run out of stamina/mana. Not to mention most gear pieces have willpower or stamina sometimes both. Mental resistance? Why would you need that. Spell Resistance does the same thing basically, and is easier to stack. Since there are no ai warrior or rogues that make use of spells that do mental resist checks.

I have yet to find sufficient gear for generating enough Stamina/Mana.

The High Regard of House Dace - +50 Stamina

Battledress of the Provocateur - +50 Stamina

Warden Commander Boots - +50 Stamina

Eamon's Shield/Fade Wall - +25 Stamina

Executioner's Helm - +25 Stamina

Helm of Honnleath - +2 all attributes

Andruil's Blessing - +2 all attributes

Sash of Forbidden Secrets - +6 Willpower

It's not that hard to stack stamina. Then you also have it on weapons, like CGM (+75) and Nug Crusher (+100). Then there's also stamina regeneration which you can find on tons of weapon, armor, and the like.

Although admittedly it helps having DLC items...

But yeah I have never lacked stam or mana myself, and I never put points in willpower. I just don't see what's so great about it.

On the other hand, if you feel like you're running out, go ahead and put some points in it. It's also down to playing style probably.

Like I said above. If you have the DLC, you start out with loads of stam. If not, then you will be missing stam in the beginning.

Chasind Great Maul happens to be the best 2-hander in the game and goes a long way toward solving any stam problems. You can buy it in Denerim after 2 treaties. Treaties, not just main quests.

For DW, you don't really need much stam as most dam is coming from auto-attacks anyway.

Stamina is built via willpower

Stamina is built via willpower

If this is the case, I am rather happy I decide to invest in some extra Will for my characters.

I'm sorry but that's simply not true. You gain a small amount of mana and stamina per level, and this is exactly why willpower becomes less and less necessary as the game progresses.

While your stamina/mana increases with levels, the activation cost of abilities is static.

Can people seriously give advice without knowing that you gain mana and life every level up?

Thats. Just. Ouch.

I find Templar a very good specialization. Holy Smite is my favorite mage stopper unless my party mage can get a Mana Clash of. The stun works even on mage bosses in e.g. Awakening, and I every so often find it nice to use the dispell ability too to remove Crushing Prisons, hexes cast on me and the like. I never take Templar for the damage.

Easily; hardly ever serious.... *BAZINGA*

And I looked at the DAO Wiki, and could not find any entry on just that idea; reason I asked.....

Try the *manual*.

Even my PS3 booklet tells me how much stamina or life I get at each level if I am a warrior, rogue or mage.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if people don't look at the manual. Almost every manual just tells you that if you get seizures looking at flashing lights, you should be careful.

Not like the good old days, with 100+ page manuals detailing every aspect of the game.

I can't read the manual; print is too small for these Ancient eyes.

In any event, good to know my Stamina/Mana pool has a deep end.

^ In my day, most RPG gamers were like Sheldon; not Vin Diesel....
