You don't need it as a Templar either. Templar is for 2 things:
1. Being able to equip Templar-specific items to gain spell resistance.
2. AoE knockdown with Holy Smite. The knockdown, not the damage.

I mean, I luv me some Will for mana & stamina, but even I know it is not a primary ability. Try the respec books and leave Will at 30-40.

With 0 Willpower, it would do 20 damage.
With 100 Willpower, it would do 40 damage.
It's used mainly for its stun/knockback.

my character is doing fine as far as damage goes, thanks to tomes. I was just hoping Holy Smite would be worthy of its name.
It's completely up to you. Just saying - you could do much, much more damage if you dropped most of that willpower and spent it elsewhere.
I think it's been illustrated very well in the post above that Holy Smite is BAD for damage

Well willpower is one of the worst stats, and you can get through the whole game without spending a single point in it.
Where do Stamina/Mana and Mental Resistance come from?

Battledress of the Provocateur - +50 Stamina
Warden Commander Boots - +50 Stamina
Eamon's Shield/Fade Wall - +25 Stamina
Executioner's Helm - +25 Stamina
Helm of Honnleath - +2 all attributes
Andruil's Blessing - +2 all attributes
Sash of Forbidden Secrets - +6 Willpower
It's not that hard to stack stamina. Then you also have it on weapons, like CGM (+75) and Nug Crusher (+100). Then there's also stamina regeneration which you can find on tons of weapon, armor, and the like.

But yeah I have never lacked stam or mana myself, and I never put points in willpower. I just don't see what's so great about it.
On the other hand, if you feel like you're running out, go ahead and put some points in it. It's also down to playing style probably.

Chasind Great Maul happens to be the best 2-hander in the game and goes a long way toward solving any stam problems. You can buy it in Denerim after 2 treaties. Treaties, not just main quests.
For DW, you don't really need much stam as most dam is coming from auto-attacks anyway.

If this is the case, I am rather happy I decide to invest in some extra Will for my characters.

While your stamina/mana increases with levels, the activation cost of abilities is static.

Even my PS3 booklet tells me how much stamina or life I get at each level if I am a warrior, rogue or mage.
