Hey. I bought ME1 on Steam, and when I try to start the game, it hangs on a black screen and I have to alt+ctrl+del out and end the process.

Have you patched it to 1.02 level yet?

It's Steam, so it will install with the latest patch. To the OP, I can only suggest the standard stuff: reinstall the game, check for new drivers, etc. I see you are on Win7, perhaps there is an XP compatibility mode you can try? Also, is the game locking up at a black screen when you actually run the game (i.e. after the splash screen) or when you start a new game (i.e. some time after the main menu screen)? If you can get to the main menu, try changing video settings, maybe it is using a resolution your monitor doesn't like.

Good luck.

It's freezing up right after the splash screen.

The only other thing I can think of aside from the standard troubleshooting suggestions of reinstall and driver update is to try disabling the Steam overlay. It has rarely caused me trouble, but I have heard reports of it screwing up in some games, and it was updated recently so you may try that. Right-click on Mass Effect in the Steam games list, go to Properties and untick "Enable Steam Community In-Game."
