I've recently been attempting a change in files for Mass Effect 2 in an attempt to lower graphics further than allowed in the configuration tool, resulting in a higher framerate. I was actually doing this in-game, and I didn't notice anything, so I just continued playing.

Next time I tried starting ME2, it gave me an error saying "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." and so, I'm stuck not being able to start the game as that damn solution finding never works.

I've reverted all changed text in the files back to normal and it still doesn't work. I guess that's why you're supposed to back up files.

Currently running Windows Vista 32-bit with a Geforce 8400GS. Any help would be appreciated.

An 8400 GS is so far below the minimum, it's no wonder you were jumping through hoops with it, but in spite of all that, it's gone and died on you.  All of the Geforce 8n00s were subject to an early death because of bad firmware that controlled the cooling fans improperly, especially the 8600 GTS, 8400 GS, and the first model of 8800 GTS.  Yours probably has died, or is currently in its death throes.

Would I be correct in assuming you were fiddling with Coallesced.ini? Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "doing this in-game." Were you Alt+Tab'ing and changing stuff while the game was running? If so, whatever changes you made were probably not loaded until the game restarted. AND, if you were indeed editing Coallesced.ini without using ME2 Coallesced Editor or INI Fixer, the game will detect it as "corrupt" and refuse to run. If this is the case, and you have no backup of that file, you will need to reinstall ME2 or find someone with the same patch you are running (presumably 1.02) and ask them to share their Coallesced.ini file with you.

@Gorath Alpha: I am aware that the 8400 GS is below minimum, which boggles my mind given that the 6800 is supposed to be minimum, but I suppose it has something to do with the lack of gaming capability rather than when it was released and so. I doubt it died, the game wasn't running that bad, just not as well as I hoped. I can play any other game fine.

@kariod: Indeed I was tabbing out of the game while changing the Coallesced.ini file. I had a feeling no changes would be shown until the game restarted. Also had a feeling that it would come down to reinstalling or sharing the file. It always seems to. A quick question, if someone were nice enough to come up and share their Coallesced.ini file with me, would it delete all progress and profiles I have made in-game? If so, I'll simply just reinstall since it wouldn't take as long. However, if using someone's file doesn't delete my progress, then I'll gladly take it so I can continue with my Insanity run instead of having to restart on Casual then import that character back in(not that I was far into the game on Insanity anyway). If this is the case, I believe my game version is 1.01. Not sure why it hasn't updated, but if anyone is willing to share the above mentioned file for this version please do so.

Lucky you: Original 1.01 Coalesced

No, you should not lose any save data or progress. If you are really concerned about it, however, just backup the BioWare\\Mass Effect 2 directory in your Documents folder.

Also, if you want to safely make changes to Coalesced.ini (oh, oops, it has one L), check out ME2 Coalesced Editor and ME2 Coalesced.ini Mod Manager

The "8" part of the name in any 8n00 Geforce has minimal reflection on gaming performance. that is only its generation, and while the 8400 GS is "only" three years old, it was always pretty much of a JUNK part, even when new, while the 6800s, all other than the SE / XT pair, were High End, and started out at a much more advanced performance level.

The Geforce 6n00 & 7n00 generations were somewhat lacking in Pixel Shader capability compared to the Radeons they competed against, and the 8400 GS does have superior Shader functionality, but it is just BOG SLOW.

Very basic discussion of video cards, video chips, and even of laptops' limits:

@kariod Thank you very much. I don't think I'll be messing with that Coalesced.ini file anymore, not even with the programs above(I actually probably don't have room for them, anyway).

@Gorath Alpha Thank you for trying to help as well. As for the discussion forum I'll be sure to check it out. But first I just want to say that I've been erm... happy enough, I suppose, with my 8400 GS. It's much better than the old 3400 I had before. I would currently have a 9700 if I recall correctly, however that was almost half an inch too long and was interfering with some wires(which still makes me sad two years later) or even a Radeon X1950 PRO, however that was a replacement for the 3400 on an older computer which supported the port, this computer does not. So in the end I'm stuck with this 8400 GS until it dies out, but as long as I can run a game above 20FPS I'll be fine. I've actually grown so used to the terrible graphics that when I try the good graphics my eyes feel strange.

Anyway, thank you both. It's much appreciated. It's time to go back to finish what I started. Maybe... Insanity is damn hard!
