Hello. I wanted to offer some advice to people who might have problems running DA:O. My system specs surpassed the games requirements, however, I found that my game would run well for a bit but after battles, certain scenes, or scenery changes, the fps would slow down to a slide show. Also, loading from area to area was a pain and I often found myself alt+tab to get the game to move forward.

Well, I researced a lot on google and found out that my specific processor (amd 9100e phenom) along with other phenom processors has a glitch that makes it run poorly and needs to be patched, to get it to work at full speed. Well, needless to say that I did this and not only does DA:O run amazing now with no problems but all of my others games, apps, and load times have improved significantly. Check it out! Beware: Read thoroughly to make sure you are doing everything right. It's not that hard to do but first make sure you even need the patch. This requires a little research but it's not hard to do; google is your friend. The newer versions of the Phenom CPU have fixed this problem but mine (Revision 2) was a buggy one.

Here are the links:

http://www.hardwarec...our-phenom.html

http://forums.pcper....ad.php?t=458082

http://www.rebelshav...c;f=13;t=000111

I found the first link very helpful and easiest to understand but the last two are also very imformative.

I hope this helps some people. It worked for me! :wizard:

Oh my god, I love you. The game is now running at max rez, 2x AA, and all other effects on and getting 55-60 fps... maybe like 40 in really high action sequences. Also have been able to play for hours on end without needing any restarts or seeing any increase in load time!

Before trying this I had upgraded to latest beta video drivers (did a driver sweep too between versions), all hardware drivers updated, tried playing with processor affinity, tried playing with page files, system has been fully defraged with 2 different programs, did disk cleanups, and windows fully updated. All that and I was still getting the issue that appeared to be a memory leak, getting low framerates on just mid settings, having to save and restart the game every 45 min, and increasing load times the longer I played.

STICKY THIS INFO!!!

Specs:
Phenom 9500 Quad-Core
4 Gigs RAM
EVGA GTX 260 SSC (195.39 beta drivers)
Windows 7 Ulitmate RC

Wow I have always had AMD CPUs since I put together my first computer in 2001 but this really shakes my faith in them... thankfully my 3 year old Athlon64 doesnt have this problem, but for my next upgrade I will seriously consider Intel..

After some further reading it turns out this only applies to 9500 and 9600 Phenoms. The xx50 ones don't have this issue. The 9700s were a bad run and were pulled from shelves, so if you have one of those you may want to invest in a new processor. Any of the newer generations don't have this problem. However, some reading also pointed to the possibility that some versions of the Core 2 Duos and i7s may have the same or similar issue... and also read another story that the final i7s that were shipped were fine. So, I dunno if that helps any Intel users out there.

Phenom II processors should not be affected by this issue. However you may still want to check your motherboard BIOS to see if it has a setting for TLB Cache Mode or something simliar and, if so, see if it's marked as Disabled.

I'm not using Vista... and I'm betting my last BIOS update turned TLB back on without me paying noticing. I'm hoping that this fix works for me on XP also.

Hello. I was wondering why the load times were taken 2-5 minutes to launch. Thank you for the heads up on this but I am hoping someone can give me a little more help. I am running a Vista machine with AMD Quad Core 9600, and an MSI K9A2 Platinum MB. That being said I cannot find a way to get into the hidden menu in the BIOS (I have searched and tried tons of the codes on the net) to enable/disable the TLB patch nor do I even know if I have the patch. I never physically went out and got the patch. Does that mean that I don't have it or does the BIOS check itself and automatically do this kind of thing without my knowledge? All I know is that the load times are unbearable and I cannot get into the hidden menu options of the BIOS. Any help or direction in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

the BIOS will never self-update... try setting core affinity to 2 and 3 only and let us know how that works for you

That particular fix is only for certain Phenom processors, but I've seen the issue with X2 and X4 AMDs as well as certain Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Intel processors... setting affinity resolves the problem for the vast majority

I'm experiencing the loading and stuttering issues, but have a phenom II x4 920. Is this distinctly different from some of the quad problems that often come up, which necessitate setting affinity to two cores?

the OP's issue is a bit of a different fix, but the resolution for the Phenom II X4s is to set affinity to the 2 and 3 processor checkboxes only... I think the issues are actually very similar (it's architectural with AMD) but I'm not sure there's a fix available for the X4 processors

Wow! Such an easy fix. That worked great. Now it is loading in under 5 seconds. I can't thank you enough. So I need to do that every time I run DA is that correct?

One of the links the OP provided has instructions for Windows to just run it at boot. I've noticed better fps in other games too because of this fix and no more BSODs than I usually get. :P

that or find one the available programs that sets processor affinity... I imagine they'll add the option into the .ini eventually like they did with Neverwinter Nights

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

This has fixed all the performance issues I've been experiencing in the game. No more framerate problems, no more insanely long load times. It's like a brand new computer! :o

This needs to be stickied immediately!

Happy to have helped.

Update: This patch works with Windows 7 64-bit if anyone was curious.

Yes, you need to apply to patch every time you boot up if you don't have the option to disable TLB in your bios. I did not have the option in my bios so I scheduled to have my computer run the TLB patch everytime I start windows. One of the links I posted gives you directions on how to do this. Cheers!

Wow, I applied the patch. I had a little of problems with. The first time I ran it, it gave me an error message. I double checked everything and then choose the option to enable, which it did, then disabled it and it said it disabled it.

Ran Dragon Age and it flew. Load screens were now less then 30secs instead of the 5-10 minutes. The major battles were now flawless with no lag.

Hats off to the OP, it runs perfect. Now I can play again.

Well I guess I was responding a bit too early. It was loading very quickly for like the next 4 loads and then it started slowing down again. Also, I cannot get by the "Hut" sequence with Morg and her mom without the gaming locking up. I have tried changing the affinities to every combination and nothing works. I am stumped now.

what are your other system specs? I asked about the toolset because it can cause unexplained issues with crashing and such

The game engine is the problem it seems. We have to wait for a patch to fix things like this ugly memory leak of some sort.

If it was a memory leak, everyone would have it.  As the OP has clearly shown, some of the problems are tied to at least one specific processor series.  Throwing "memory leak" around is at best an inaccurate exaggeration and at worst a gross falacy.  If setting core affinity or troubleshooting solves even some of the problems then, leak it is not.
Is it possible that there's a problem somewhere with how the coding translates to the processors? Yes.

Is the answer to insist that Bioware fix "the memory leak"? NO!

The answer is to have a look around the internet.  Try running CPU-Z, then google your exact processor model.  Do a little research and see if you can bring more information to the discussion.  You might even find the next big fix.  But posting like this wastes the data space it's using on the forum; it helps no one and may discourage someone from even trying something new. Shame on you!
