i have a bard that i've been messing around with, and i've been giving darts a try since i almost never use them (lots of inventory micromanagement).
i got the gauntlets of weapon expertise (+1 THAC0, +2 Damage) and was curious to see if the damage bonus worked on darts, too and may be better than bracers of archery.
that's when i discovered some weird damage numbers. my bard kept doing 3 and 4 damage (which indicates a +2 damage bonus).... BUT i never ever ever saw a 5 in there. curious, i took off the gauntlets and just tossed around darts naked... but sure enough i only did 1 and 2 damage, and after about 5 minutes of testing, i can reasonably say that 3's just don't come up. interestingly enough, it also seems like the random distribution of 1's and 2's is *not* even... you get a loooot more 1's than you get 2's.
i've tried this out with all 4 types of darts available in baldur's gate 2, and i get identical results. lots of 1s and some 2s with normal darts, darts of stunning, and darts of wounding, and lots of 2s and some 3s with dart +1.
i'm trying to figure out what might be going on in the engine, but this certainly dramatically changes the relative effectiveness of darts -- seems like they'd be useful *only* as disruption, as even with their high rate of fire multiplying any damage bonuses, throwing axes and throwing daggers would do more damage per round (as i can reasonably say the expected damage from a dart is less than 1.5 per hit).
i tried googling around, but i don't know if this is fixed in BG2 (and thus BG1Tutu), and no one else seems to notice, which seems to indicate that most people just don't use darts that much or pay much attention to their combat logs.
can anyone confirm or deny that there's a bug with dart damage? or do i just have a messed up install?
