Mass Effect 1 through steam, Will Mass Effect 2 work if not bought through steam.

I'm unsure if you can see the games on my profile, if not just so your aware I have this annoying habit of buying two copies of most Bioware games. Once on the 360, then when my head is on straight I buy the proper one, the pc one, as well. I've done it with Dragon Age, Mass Effect 1 and soon to be Mass Effect 2. Herein lies my problem. Rather than me waffle on (which I have a tendency to do) Here are my concerns/questions about the PC sequel sequentially rather than in a big hard to read paragraph.
1. If I bought it off steam, do I have to get the second one through steam? I'd ideally prefer no, I'd like a hard copy, it's a bit cheaper now (sorry Bioware! In my defence you have had a lot of my money already)
2. Is it possible to back up the saves? Does it make a difference if its from the steam folder?
3. Is it possible to back up achievements? I read somewhere about registering the game using the steam key, but can't find it on this site. Does this mean the achievements, once the game is registered, are linked to the account?
4 So far I've have a total failure getting DLC for the first game, is this probably due to me not registering the game. Am I likely to have similar problems with the second game?
5. Finally, as much as people will hate this comment, I don't particularly mind DRM, I buy all my games so it doesnt bother me, BUT I read somewhere that ME2 and/or the DLC for it has a limited amount of installs. Is this the case? If so will it ever be increased?
That's it! I appreciate that this is quite a lot of questions, any help will be graciously received even if it is one word answers.
Thanks guys.

i have ME1 on Steam and and a regular copy of ME2. So far I have had no issues with DRM (and I've uninstalled/reinstalled a few times already. I think it's just disc check) or DLC(i have all of them). If I remember correctly, even the steam version puts saves in My documents>Bioware folder, so i don't think it's much of an issue( and yes, you can copy that folder. I saved all my ME1 saves when I replaced my hard drive). I have the same prob getting Bring down the sky on the steam ME1. I believe at one point they had one that was fixed for Steam but i got the game after it had already been out for a while, so I never found it. Not sure about the achievements thing, but when I reinstalled ME1 recently, I still had all my achievements, though none of them affect ME2.
Hope that helps.
