I've shied away from Miranda and Jack so far.  What does Kasumi say?

Kasumi says:

"Really Shepard, in the Engine Room... right there where Tali works,"

"and exactly how much is Miranda genetically modified,
'cause I mean - wow."

As for the "not this Sh*t gain comment" about the engine room. I thought it was cool idea, but it just didn't make sense. As others have stated it seemed like pure fan service. Mordin removed all of bugs from the lab, why couldn't Miranda do that for somewhere they were unlikely to be seen. Even if they are no bugs, that still doesn't change the fact that their are windows to the engine room all over the ship. Miranda takes her work very seriously. The game makes a point to hammer that part of her personality home. Jack seems more like the lets get it on in the engine room kinda of girl not Miranda.

So Kasumi commented the same way I did -- "Wow, way to throw it in Tali's face, Shep."

And yeah, that kind of unprofessional, indulgent, self-absorbed behavior doesn't strike me as Miranda at all.  She had to be convinced to talk to her sister, even.

And yeah, forget bugs, Mordin and Jacob can look right into the damn engine room from their stations.

How do you know Miranda even knew that tali had a crush on shepard? We only see Miranda and tali talk once on freedoms progress
Miranda also stated she Cleared the engine room meaning likley everyone on the engine deck, she's second in command onboard im sure she has authority to clear the deck.

Yeah. Jacob's secretly a huge history buff.  Now you may wonder how I know that, since the man won't tell you a damn thing about, well, anything, but you should stop that wondering:  I just do. Now if there's nothing else, I should get back to my duties...

Because it's her job to know everything that happens on the ship? Didn't she install all the bugs? And she makes constant reports to TIM. I think she would make it her business to know the crew's motivations, and anyone even glimpsing the way Tali seems to turn into a blushing schoolgirl when she talks to male Shepard could get the picture. And, regardless of whether they were actually on the deck watching, her clearing the deck and taking Shepard in with her certainly sends a message and makes it clear what's going on. Plus, Mordin's station looks out onto the engine deck, but aren't on it. Did she clear the entire ship? It seemed a pretty deliberate marking of territory to me.

You know that image just reminds me of just how annoying it was to run around the Normandy every single time I needed to talk to Miranda or any of the other squad mates.

Gezz, I'm the Commander of the Ship and leader of the mission and people leave ME messages to go run and see them.

Bioware should have given Shepard an office, not Miranda.   The only times that it made sense that I go see a member of the squad was when I was trying to learn why Grunt was trying to put his head through a window, and when Jack and Miranda were about to go at it.

Don't waste your time with them. They are as ridiculous as their arguments.
Nobody on the Normandy can see the place where the scene takes place, the crew can see the engine core but not the room entrance.
And they didn't notice that Miranda also choose the engine room even if Tali is not on board (if you don't recruit her).

Eh. the female LI in ME2 aren't all that fantastic either when I think about it.

I have to agree with this. The ME2 romance plots were cookie cutter. Jack; the bad girl that you make good, Miranda; the popular cheeleader with insecurities, and Tali; the shy nerdy girl.

The Jack plot was alright, it made for good conversations in the romance story and the paragon line in particular was a saving grace. Miranda is a complete turn off; there's something not right about the model of the face that struck me as unnatural. And the conversations are bland. And then the deal with the engine room scene... really? In the engine room? What was that about? I alt+f4'd halfway through that scene because it was just too far out in left field. The Tali line was cute because I'm a sucker for hugs and a nerdy girl that's into electronics. o.O But I'm not too big on her fragile damsel in distress/self-pitying dialogues. It gets old after a while.

I much prefered the ME1 romances and would contest that Ashley is a far superior LI to all of the above. This is why my main Shepard has stayed loyal. I hope Bioware keeps their promise for a resolution of the LIs in ME3.

In regards to the OP and Jacob... I think that line means exactly what you originally thought it meant. "She requires a better man than I." I don't know that you can extract any other meaning from that other than he believes he is not good enough for her. So I can see how romancing him and hearing that would make you think twice. It makes it sound like he's ok for you because you're not that special. What a nice thing to say eh?!

There should've been a renegade action at this point for female LIs...

* Right hook to Jacob's jaw.

Jacob's not even interested in Shepard when he says that line, so he's flying solo with whatever insecurities he's got. so it's not saying that she's nothing special it's him doubting himself when it comes to love.Image IPB

The OP mentioned that they were already romancing Jacob when he said that line during their playthrough. As follows:

Captain Hex wrote...
Did anyone else playing as female Shepard find that line more than a little insulting?

If you can't remember it, I'll set it up for you. Essentially, it's at the end of Jacob's loyalty mission. You end up with the option to discuss his old days with Miranda, and her keeping a promise she made to him. He ends up stating that Miranda "requires a better man than I". It particularly grabbed my attention when my Shepard was romancing him. I had hoped he might say something else. He did not.

true you can be on the path to ramancing him but he doesn't realyl show intrest until you mention "not wanting to get my ass shot off if I mke a move on you" (or a line to that degree) because he stumbles and says" I haven't looked at you that way...well I have looked but...." so from that it looks like he thought about it but didn't think about going through with it.

I think one issue is that some people don't consider the romance to start until you are given the option "officially" after having completed that mission. Thus, they see it as him making a casual comment about an ex to someone he never thought of as a romantic partner, and so never considered her reaction. From my perspective, however, she has been interested the entire time and made that clear through comments like commenting on his body and asking if he's single (the option you get as a female instead of saying you're interested in Miranda). He hasn't been pushing Shep away either, he seems interested as well, just not ready to jump* in yet until he dealt with his daddy issues.  Shepard was already considering him a romantic interest, and then gets that line tossed to her like a used hanky.  For Sheps that weren't thinking of him that way and didn't flirt with him to begin with, I suppose it could come across differently.

(*on an unrelated note, I originally typoed "jump" as "hump". until I reread and fixed it.)

Miranda goes from being ice queen to talking about "love" in what seems like twenty minutes. It was tougher for me to suspend disbelief about this than it was for me to accept Shepard's resurrection from the dead.  This romance should have been motivated by lust, pure and simple, from both of them.

Well I disagree with you on the Tali romance. Granted Shepard doesn't get to see her face, but unlike the other LIs, Tali flat tells Shepard that she's been interested in him since original game. She also says that she didn't he'd be interesting because of all the baggage that comes along with her being Quarian. While other romances in the games seen like they came out of nowhere, Tali's has the advantage of her knowning Shepard for a long period of time, pining for him, and having a Freudian slip that lets Shepard know that she wants to be more than friends.

It would have worked better if the romance was dependent on how Shepard interacted with Tali. I made a xenophobe character for ME1. I treated Tali as bad as possible which was pretty bad. In ME1 you could actually be mean to your allies, tell them you didn't want them there etc. I then denied her the geth data so she would not talk to me anymore. In ME2 I met up with Tali and started to threaten her team (you know what happens when I don't get my way...) and refused her the pilgrim who then died. I went to Haestrom to inform Tali of what the quarian people owe me and got another one of her people killed. Then I have a chat with Kelly and she informs me that Tali has a secret crush on me, bizarre.

It's the same with Liara btw. I picked her up last with this character. She was confused and didn't know what was going on so naturally I screamed at and insulted her as best I could (again pretty good). She was allowed a quick look into Shepard's brain, sent to the medbay and off to Illos I went. In ME2 I go to her office and without any way for me to stop it they start hugging. I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

Yeah it's the same thing Conrad Verner. It sucks. Although Liara seems to throw herself at Shepard in ME1 no matter how you treat her. That chick gave me serious stalker vibes in the ME1.

That doesn't me she saw much of anything.  She may have simply that noticed Shep headed down there right after Miranda did, and done the dead simple math.  If she can leave her room to go full on voyeur, she can leave her room to do that too.

I'll be honest and admit I avoid the Jacob romance just because Femshep just seems so needy when she is stalking Jacob. Considering the rest of the romances don't come off that way to me, I'm thinking it's just my perception filter working overtime again
