This was talked out in previous threads awhile ago. It's actually a very mature comment, so it doesn't surprise me that it went over the heads of a few and offended others.

The only reason why any Fem-Shepards would feel offended by the comment was if they felt they were somehow in direct competition with Miranda or unsure about how Jacob feels about her. There's really no other reason for it. I suppose it doesn't help that Jacob never gives any real details as to what happened between himself and Miranda, but it isn't hard to guess.

Sometimes men get the strangest aspersions cast on us when women misunderstand the meanings in things that we say. This is mostly because we just have different communication styles from each other. Jacob's comment is a perfect example of this. What Jacob said had absolutely NOTHING to do with Shepard, male or female. Yet some gamers were offended.

Look at the scenario. Jacob's father had been missing for 10 years and Miranda had information about the whereabouts of the Hugo Gernsback. Does she go in and tell Taylor about this? NO. Instead she practically turns it in into guessing game. Why play games with information like this? Haven't they worked together long enough to be able to share vital information with each other? Why would she manipulate him that way?

So yes, Miranda has serious issues, even TIM didn't like the way she went about it. During the mission you can hear the frustration in Taylor's voice. LOL! Poor Jacob was only expecting a ship wreck and a corpse to bury. Instead he's forced to confront the reality of his estranged father not only being alive, but the head of some brainwashed commune of women he's been abusing for the last decade. Now imagine that whole scenario playing out right in front of your commanding officer, and then going through the embarrassment of falsely accusing TIM (your boss of all people!) of being involved. Sheesh!!

After ALL OF THAT, how could anybody have misinterpreted Jacob's comment as him feeling unworthy of Miranda?

I agree with this.

Could we not make this a Men vs. Women, "ain't that like a girl to pick apart everything we say" thing? Don't defend Jacob just because some crazy b*tch blew something you said way out of proportion once. She was just a crazy b*tch, dude. I've seen them, I know these things.

We'll stick to the lines that offend women, and you stick to the lines that offend men, and we'll all take each other's word for it that they just didn't roll right.

I don't think the point that "men and women are wired to think differently" is a man vs. woman argument.

It's an argument recognizing that our brain chemistry effects how we interpret things.  I'm pretty sure this has been proven in any number of academic journals, for what it's worth.

It's not a competition.

And it's a well-known fact that men and women think and, as a result, interpret things differently. For instance, I don't talk to my male friends the same way I talk to my female friends. Not at all, actually.

Nope. It has nothing to do with anything between Shepard and Miranda. This particular Shepard has never even spoken to Miranda when it wasn't required. It has to do with with Jacob and what his statement may or may not say about his impression of Shepard.

I can't speak for men, or all women for that matter, but I know that I generally assume that people say what they mean and mean what they say. If you're saying one thing and meaning something else, or saying one thing, the meaning of which can only be properly understood with the addition of something else, then the onus is on you for any misunderstandings. People are not mind readers and cannot be assumed to glean secret kernels of meaning from obscure comments. If Miranda requires a better man, it sounds exactly like he is saying that either Miranda is too good for him, thus he's less than she needs, or simply that there are better men out there than him and Miranda needs one of them. That's insulting when Shepard was interested in him. And to those who say the relationship hadn't started yet, you previously had the option to specifically ask him if he was single and remark on how good shape he is in. You've been flirting with him the whole time.

This might be an example of men and women seeing things differently? Rather than seeing it from Jacob's perspective, I saw it from Miranda's. They have a history, things sound like they ended badly from Jacob's previous comments, and so she gave him this gift of finding his father (she couldn't have known how bad it would be planet side, she likely expected he'd find a body) and didn't want to get involved with the situation or him personally. She only admits it was her when he starts accusing her hero, TIM. She kept her promise, but she kept it for herself, because she always keeps her word, not for him. Thus, it didn't matter if he knew about it or not. That's what I would do in the same situation.

You assume it's a misinterpretation because your own interpretation is that he does not. Judging by the looks he shares with her and comments he has made, I made a different interpretation. People do that.

Always good to open with a little insulting condescension.  Nothin' hooks an audience like that!  Or was this some sort of clever Jacob parody?

Actually it's not about competition at all, really.

It's just Jacob revealing that he's sort of placed Miranda on this pedestal, and he recognizes he can't measure up.

When a woman sees a man has placed another woman on a pedestal, it makes her take a step back. It did for me. It's just kind of instinct. You realize this guy's not over her and he needs some time and space.

I can understand that, though that's not how it is for me. I tend to value my words when talking to everyone, especially strangers, and especially women. I also don't talk to my female friends in a way that can potentially cause them to question what I say/mean. I've had enough problems before, and I intend to not let that happen again just because of some random misinterpretation. It's something I am glad that I have come to learn.

Anyway, we're off-topic. Jacob? ^_^

I've been there and I think I never got over her. Don't think I ever will. I think of her from time to time... the one that got away.

I always think of it as Jacob being infatuated with her. He wants her... but can't seem to please her. Hell, the only reason she goes with Shepard is because he's better then she ever will. Women want that, a good, reliable man that will always fight to the end.
