It's not a statement about his own worthiness, or placing anyone(least of all Miranda) on a pedestal. It's a statement about the kind of person Ms Lawson IS.
A better man perhaps would look past all of her BS and manipulation. He'd have to.

I think it's cute how you get all borderline obsessive here, Night.
But you deserve a better man than I...
Still chasing me through threads for a good flirt, I see.
Tease.
Now you see if you tried to hit up another girl after she'd just heard you say that to me you'd be faced with this:
See how she's like, "What the...?"
DANMMMM... she's astonishing. Is that you Night? WOW.
I know it's not you. You probably have glasses broken and tied in the middle and zits... ewww (because your a computer/gaming nerd, get it?).

I don't think he was trying to insinuate that Shepard was second priiiiize, but wow, I feel like he really flubbed up his wording. So while I realize logically that he wasn't trying to be insulting, I still feel a bit insulted on FemShep's behalf every time I hear him say that.

Yes, of course and obviously you have to talk to him to get his loyalty. But I was referring to the scene itself -- the scene in which he says that. He says it anyway. You don't actually have to go to the Armory and talk to him in order to get the line of out him.

Well, that's just silly. Wombats are marsupials. Now, if a nice, respectable placental mammal like a badger did it on the other hand...

But he's saying she needs a better man. That directly addresses worthiness.

It could also imply any of the other interpretations listed in the thread.
If he wanted to directly address worthiness, he could have said "She's too good for me." He didn't. It's a subtle but important distinction.

Fine, he didn't mean it, but I as a man, when he said that to Maleshep, I was like.... WTF!? This guy is a horrible person. Why am I talking to you? Get yourself sthraighten out man, seriously. What is your problem? Self confidence? Geez.
I as a man thought the opposite. Given that I've used that exact phrase before, I thought the he was saying she needs someone more whiling to put up with her BS.
