Well, while you don't have to harden him to make him King, he's a BETTER King if you harden him.  If you don't harden him, then he travels around visiting the people and being a well-liked king, but doesn't actually DO anything for Ferelden.

I know this cause in my various playthroughs I've never hardened him until my latest, i hardened him and married him.

Actually you shouldn't have ACTUALLY died in that battle, it's supposed to be damn near unbeatable. You "die" but the game doesn't go to the "Your journey ends..." screen, you wake up in Fort Drakon's prison.  I HAVE finished it and killed Ser Cauthron there, but still.  You're kinda supposed to get caught and then break out of prison.  She doesn't really rat you out so much as escape to have you rescued.  It wouldn't do anyone any good if you ALL were captured.

She only does that when you rat her out anyway.



Cauthrian hits like a sodding archdemon. Best trick is to retreat to a back room since she is the only one who follows you.
