Hawke isn't human, he's a half-dwarf, half-elf who grew tall from eating alot of corn as a boy in Lothering. The Darkspawn don't invade Lothering, it gets destroyed because Hawke sneaks away cigarettes to smoke behind the tavern's whisky still and sets the town on fire before the Darkspawn even get there.
