Hawke is actually a product recall specialist for a major car company in Thedas. He suffers from insomnia and tries to fix things by attending support groups for victims of various ailments. He meets Varric, a dwarven bodybuilder suffering from gynecomastia, which has left him with a bosom like Bethany's.

He also takes note of another individual faking sickness at the support groups, a mysterious gypsy pirate lady (MGPL for short) and calls her out. Instead they end up making an agreement on who attends which groups, hinting the roots of some sort of romance.

After a business trip, on his plane flight home to Lothering, Hawke meets an intriguing figure named Tyler Warden. Both exchange their views and numbers. Hawke returns only to find a burnt and razed Lothering, wondering why anyone would harbor so much hostility against him to burn down his home village. He calls Tyler, who offers him a place, but not before engaging in a fight outside of a tavern. Not before long, their actions attract a following, culminating in the formation of a secret pugilistic organization within the tavern's basement.
