Squad and Engagements System/Minigame Improvement Discussion

Long time ago, during early development, dragon age promised
player could command engagement between fairly large armies. That was largely
forgotten after the focus had shifted. (look up early gamespy preview if you
doubt me.) The closest thing to a large engagement was the army picker in DA. In
a nutshell, The army picker allowed squad of NPC to be summoned in a pinch
close to the end of the game.

IMHO it’s somewhat unsatisfying. So here I dedicate a threat
to the discussion of the squad system. The problem with squad tactics in DA1 is
that there isn’t any beyond choosing one. Once they are deployed they just
mindlessly rush the enemy. To rephrase it – there are no way of commanding your
squads.

Dragonshard and Dawn of War II have provided satisfactory solution
to the issue of squad command. Inspired by those systems, I have come up with
something similar. It’s pretty simple to tie squads to your followers, and by
doing so, squad tactics are tied to party tactics. This only requires squads to
be considered during game design, rather than to be tagged onto it.

Basically each follower would be recruited with a squad that
performs a similar tactical role. During large engagements these retinues are
deployed automatically. However squads have only a few abilities. Therefore, counter
dynamics works differently from highly customizable characters. For example,
while a warrior in DA have 12 different ways to beat up someone with a shield,
a warrior squad would have only one or two signature abilities; this allows all
units to be balanced appropriately against each other.

Large engagement, therefore, would play very much like a
tactics game. Players would maneuver his pieces so that they would engage
enemies they are strong against. I am not sure if things like direction or
morale would over complicate things, but they could be fun if done well. Squad
engagement could even be implemented as a turn based mini-game implemented
in-engine.

Of course, because squad engagement would play like a
minigame, a commander character should be provided to the player in case they
would like to skip these battles.

Hopefully bioware will have something fun in mind.
